To show subtitles during a 24/7 YouTube stream, send captions while the stream is live: either embed EIA-608/CEA-708 captions in the video signal, or use supported captioning software to send them to YouTube’s caption ingestion URL. Uploading an SRT file to a prerecorded video is a separate workflow and does not create a live caption feed. YouTube’s automatic live captions are not a dependable substitute for a continuous caption plan, and they do not remain on the archived stream.
Choose how captions will reach YouTube
YouTube documents two live caption paths. Pick one based on whether your production chain can embed captions or you have a captioning system that can send a separate feed. In either case, configure the caption source in YouTube Live Control Room and ensure the selected source actually delivers caption data.

Check the current YouTube Live settings and the caption software vendor’s instructions before implementation; interface details and supported software versions can change. YouTube’s live requirements are documented at YouTube Help: Use automatic captioning.
Set up embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 captions
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and open its setup or settings area.
- Enable closed captions and choose Embedded 608/708 as the caption source.
- Configure the encoder or production chain to generate compatible EIA-608/CEA-708 captions. Depending on the setup, captions may be read from a supported file format or generated in real time; confirm support for your specific encoder.
- Save the settings, start the stream, and check the actual live player to confirm captions appear at the right time and in the intended language.
Do not infer that multiple languages will be available just because the caption standard supports them: YouTube currently supports one caption track for this embedded setup.

Set up captions through software and the ingestion URL
- In the stream setup in YouTube Live Control Room, turn on closed captions and select the software or external caption route presented by the current interface.
- Copy the caption ingestion URL for the stream and provide it to the captioning software or captioner. Treat this URL as stream-specific setup information and follow YouTube’s and the vendor’s security guidance.
- Configure the captioning software to send the feed to that URL, and arrange the broadcast delay required by YouTube’s documented event workflow: 30 or 60 seconds.
- Start the stream and caption feed, then check the live player for timing, legibility, and continuity. Only one caption feed is allowed per stream entry point.
YouTube’s live-caption documentation names Total Eclipse, Case CATalyst, CaptionMaker, and StreamText.Net as supported software examples. That list does not guarantee that every current product version is available or supported by its vendor; confirm current compatibility and setup instructions with both YouTube Help and the vendor.
What automatic captions can—and cannot—do
YouTube documents automatic live captions as an English-only rollout for qualifying normal-latency streams when professional captions are unavailable. Eligibility can depend on stream settings, so verify availability in the current interface rather than assuming every 24/7 stream qualifies. Live automatic captions do not remain on the archived video. YouTube generates new captions through the video-on-demand process after the stream, and those captions may differ from what viewers saw live.

If you publish a replay, inspect its subtitle track in YouTube Studio and edit it if needed. The subtitle editor and supported subtitle-file formats apply to video captions; uploading an SRT to a replay does not establish a live caption feed. Plan caption continuity for a 24/7 broadcast
A 24/7 stream is a continuing operation, not a one-time caption setting. YouTube recommends monitoring audio and video quality during encoder streams; include captions in that operational check. Decide who or what will restore the feed if the encoder or caption software reconnects, and verify caption timing after a restart. YouTube’s instruction that a stream entry point has one caption feed also means you should plan feed ownership and handoffs rather than assuming multiple independent feeds can be attached at once.

Plan the replay separately as well. YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a single 24-hour broadcast will become one complete automatic archive; determine how stream sessions and replay captions will be handled. Keep the underlying video rights and stream rules in view
Captions do not grant permission to use the audio or video in a 24/7 broadcast. Use footage, music, narration, and caption material you have the rights to use, and review YouTube’s live-streaming and copyright requirements for your situation. For documentary channels, this is especially important when a playlist includes material from multiple sources: captioning a clip does not make rebroadcasting it permissible.
