Best Way to Stream a Long Video on Repeat to YouTube Live

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a single prerecorded video and a computer you can keep online, use OBS Studio: add the file as a Media Source, enable Loop, then send the OBS output to YouTube Live using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. Test the stream before sharing it. For an unattended 24/7 broadcast, a cloud service avoids leaving a computer running at home; StreamNeo is one YouTube-only option, and YouTube’s encoder directory also lists Gyre for prerecorded 24/7 streams.

Choose a local or cloud workflow

Option Where it runs Looping and operation Best fit
StreamNeo Cloud service Loops uploaded videos and playlists for a YouTube stream; automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. Continuous or unattended streams when you do not want a computer or home connection to remain on.
OBS Studio Your computer Loop a Media Source or a VLC playlist. You set up and monitor the encoder, and your computer and connection must stay on. A one-off or managed broadcast when you can leave the local setup running.
Gyre Cloud service YouTube lists it for 24/7 prerecorded streaming; its detailed controls and current commercial terms are not established here. A cloud workflow to investigate directly with the provider.

Set up the YouTube Live stream

  1. Check eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it in advance. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and encoder setup guidance explain the requirements.
  2. Create or schedule a stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule the broadcast. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in the stream settings. The URL tells the encoder where to send video; the key associates that feed with your stream.
  3. Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password. Do not show it in screen captures or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to your channel. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.

Loop one video in OBS Studio

  1. Open OBS and create a scene for the broadcast. In Sources, select + and choose Media Source.
  2. Name the source, select the local video file, and enable Loop in the source properties. OBS documents support for common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, and WebM. The file restarts when playback reaches its end. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
  3. Check the scene preview. Confirm the video fills the frame as intended and that audio is audible. If the file has no audio, or you need a separate soundtrack, configure audio sources deliberately and confirm you have the necessary rights to every element.
  4. For an ordered playlist instead of one file, add a VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed for this source to appear in OBS. Arrange the playlist in the required order before going live.

Configure and test the encoder

  1. In OBS, open Settings and configure the stream using the server/stream URL and key supplied by YouTube Live Control Room. Prefer RTMPS where available. Keep the key private.
  2. Choose a resolution and bitrate appropriate to your upload connection and the stream’s content. YouTube’s encoder guidance gives general recommendations rather than a universal bitrate that suits every connection. Use its current settings table for the target resolution and frame rate: YouTube live encoder settings.
  3. Use a supported video codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS. Listed audio choices include AAC and MP3, and supported frame rates go up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
  4. Before the public broadcast, test with the same kind of audio and movement as the intended stream. Start the encoder, check the YouTube preview and stream health, and listen and watch for problems. YouTube recommends testing in advance and monitoring stream health; a static picture may not reveal issues that appear with more movement or audio.
  5. When the preview is correct, start the stream in OBS and confirm the broadcast is live in YouTube Studio. Keep the computer, OBS, and internet connection running for the entire broadcast.

Keep the loop eligible and useful to viewers

Looping a file technically does not make its contents eligible for YouTube Live or monetization. YouTube’s livestream terms require the creator to have the necessary worldwide rights for the live content, including music licensing rights. YouTube also states that all livestream content must follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Review the YouTube Terms of Service and Community Guidelines before broadcasting.

Use footage, music, narration, and other material you own or are licensed to use for this purpose. A song or video being publicly available online does not by itself grant permission to rebroadcast it. Repeated playback does not change your responsibility for rights or policy compliance.

Plan for long-stream archives

Do not rely on YouTube to preserve an archive of a very long live stream. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the recording matters, keep a separate local recording or other backup. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • You cannot start a live stream: Check channel verification and whether a live-stream restriction is in force. If this is the first time enabling live streaming, activation may take up to 24 hours.
  • The OBS VLC Video source is missing: Install VLC, then reopen OBS and check the Sources menu. Use Media Source with Loop for a single file if you do not need a playlist.
  • The video stops at the end: Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop. For a playlist, check Loop Playlist on the VLC Video source.
  • YouTube shows a weak or unstable stream: Check OBS’s connection and YouTube’s stream health. Reduce the output bitrate or resolution to a level your upload connection can sustain, then test again. Follow YouTube’s current encoder settings rather than guessing a one-size-fits-all bitrate.
  • The picture or sound is wrong in the preview: Confirm the intended scene and source are active, inspect the source properties, and test audio and video before publishing. Recheck after changing files or settings.
  • The local stream ends after a power or network interruption: OBS is running on your computer, so it depends on that computer and connection. The cited OBS documentation establishes loop control, not automatic reconnection after an outage; do not assume an unattended stream will resume without a separately configured and tested recovery method.
  • You expected a YouTube archive but cannot find one: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Keep your own recording if you need a dependable copy.
