YouTube documents this feature as English-only, available only to channels that have received the rollout, and usable only on streams set to normal latency. Captions shown live do not carry over to the replay; YouTube generates replay captions separately.
Turn on automatic captions for a live stream
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live.
- In the left menu, select Stream.
- In the stream settings, turn on Closed captions.
- Choose Automatic captions as the caption source.
- Select the video language, then check the stream settings before going live.
YouTube Help says automatic captions can be enabled for individual live streams, not for an entire channel. The control may not appear on every channel because rollout is ongoing. YouTube’s documented live automatic-caption option is English-only; check the current Studio controls if your screen differs. YouTube Help: Use automatic captioning
Check latency and audio before you start
Live automatic captions require normal latency. YouTube lists low- and ultra-low-latency streams as unsupported, including some mobile streams. If captions are essential, choose normal latency in the stream settings and allow for the greater delay this entails for audience interaction. YouTube Help: Live caption requirements
Captions may be missing or inaccurate when speech is hard to hear or recognize, speakers talk over one another, or multiple languages are spoken at once. Match the selected video language to the language being spoken, make speech clear in the mix, and reduce overlap where practical. Automatic speech recognition can make mistakes; no setting or piece of equipment guarantees perfect captions. YouTube Help: Live caption requirements

Rehearse the actual event conditions
Before a public documentary screening, interview, or discussion, run a short private or unlisted rehearsal with audio and movement similar to the planned event. Confirm the captions appear and monitor stream health. YouTube recommends testing before going live and checking stream health. YouTube Help: Encoder streaming YouTube Help: Prepare your live stream
If the captions do not appear
- Check channel availability: confirm that Studio offers the automatic-caption option. The feature rollout may not have reached your channel.
- Check the stream setting: open that stream’s settings and confirm closed captions and automatic captions are enabled. This is not a channel-wide switch.
- Check latency: switch from low or ultra-low latency to normal latency.
- Check language and speech: select the spoken language, improve speech audibility, and reduce competing or overlapping voices where possible.
- Test again: use a rehearsal with event-like audio and monitor stream health. If recognition remains unsuitable, consider an externally supplied caption workflow.
YouTube lists rollout, unsupported language, poor audio or unrecognized speech, overlapping speakers, and simultaneous languages among reasons captions may not appear. YouTube Help: Live caption requirements

Alternatives when automatic captions are unsuitable
YouTube supports externally supplied captions for creators with compatible encoder or caption-software workflows. These options involve more setup than selecting automatic captions and are most relevant when the built-in feature is unavailable, the spoken language is unsupported, or a dedicated caption workflow is already in place.
Embedded EIA-608 or CEA-708 captions
Configure the stream and encoder to carry embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 captions, then select embedded captions in the encoder. Although the standard allows up to four language tracks, YouTube currently supports one embedded caption track. Check YouTube’s requirements and your encoder’s documentation before relying on this route. YouTube Help: Live caption requirements

Caption software and an ingestion URL
A separate workflow uses supported caption software and a caption ingestion URL. YouTube’s requirements call for adding a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay in advanced settings for this method. That delay affects the event’s timing, so account for it when planning audience interaction. Use this option when you have a caption provider or an established encoder workflow, rather than as a quick substitute for the built-in toggle. YouTube Help: Live caption requirements
What happens to captions on the replay?
Live automatic captions do not remain on the video when the stream ends. YouTube processes captions for the video-on-demand replay separately, and those captions may differ from what viewers saw live. Check the replay after processing and review or correct its available captions separately. YouTube Help: Use automatic captioning
