Yes—you can use your own image as a YouTube Music playlist thumbnail. The feature began rolling out in October 2024, and Google’s current playlist-thumbnail instructions describe image selection on mobile and computer. In practice, the upload control can vary by account and app, so the desktop web player remains the most reliable place to try it. If the mobile app does not show an image-editing option, upload the artwork on the web and then check the app.
What custom playlist artwork changes
YouTube Music can show a playlist’s automatically assembled 2×2 grid of album art. Custom artwork replaces that default with an image you choose. That is different from AI-generated artwork: Google’s current playlist-thumbnail help page describes options to select an image, take a photo, or create artwork with AI. The feature is not a new 2026 launch; YouTube Music-specific rollout reports appeared on October 21–22, 2024. (9to5Google; Android Authority; Google’s playlist-thumbnail instructions.)
Google’s current help page is in the general YouTube Help Center, not a page specifically titled for YouTube Music. The earlier reporting, meanwhile, describes the feature in YouTube Music’s web player. The controls and availability therefore should not be assumed to be identical across YouTube, YouTube Music, every app, or every playlist.
Upload a thumbnail from a computer
- Open YouTube Music in a desktop browser and sign in to the account that owns the playlist.
- Open a playlist you created and can edit.
- Select the playlist artwork or hover over it and look for the pencil or Edit control.
- Choose Choose from library or the equivalent image-selection option, then select an image from your computer.
- Adjust the crop if prompted, then save or confirm the change.
- Refresh or reopen the playlist to check that the new artwork appears.
The rollout reports describe selecting the pencil on the artwork, choosing and cropping an image, then refreshing the playlist page. Labels can vary by client or region, so look on the artwork itself if you do not see an upload command in the three-dot menu. (9to5Google’s rollout report.)

Try it on Android or iPhone
Google’s current help instructions give a general mobile route: open the playlist, select Edit, then Choose from library and select an image. The page also describes taking a photo and using AI-generated artwork. If those controls appear in your app, follow the prompts and save the edit. (Google Help.)
That documentation does not guarantee that every YouTube Music app build or account has a direct upload control. Early YouTube Music coverage described uploading through the web player, with the resulting image then visible in the mobile app. If your app lacks Edit or image selection, use the desktop steps above and check the playlist on mobile afterward. Which playlists can you edit?
Start with a playlist you created and have permission to edit. A playlist saved from someone else, or a system-generated collection, may not offer the same controls. Do not assume that mixes, radios, or special playlists such as Liked Music support custom artwork; early rollout coverage specifically raised uncertainty about Liked Music. Availability can depend on whether the playlist is editable, as well as the account and interface.

Do you need to verify your phone number?
Some users were reportedly prompted to verify a phone number during the 2024 rollout, but that is not established as a universal requirement. Google’s current playlist-thumbnail help page does not state that everyone must verify. If YouTube prompts you, use its official verification page; do not use a third-party service.
Choose an image that works at small size
Google’s reviewed instructions do not specify a definitive playlist-art file size, resolution, or format. Do not apply YouTube video-thumbnail limits to playlist artwork: those rules cover a different feature. (YouTube video-thumbnail guidance.)

- Use a square composition as a practical design choice, not a confirmed upload requirement.
- Keep a face, logo, or other important subject near the center; the crop may vary across surfaces.
- Use clear contrast and avoid small text that will disappear on a library card.
- If an image is rejected, try a simpler, high-resolution JPG or PNG; these are practical suggestions, not verified format requirements.
- Use artwork you created, licensed, or have permission to use. A private playlist does not make unauthorized artwork risk-free.
If the upload option is missing or the image does not appear
- Try a desktop browser. Go directly to music.youtube.com rather than opening the playlist through an app link.
- Check the account and playlist. Confirm you are signed into the account that owns a playlist you can edit.
- Look on the artwork. The pencil or Edit control may be on the thumbnail rather than in the playlist menu.
- Complete verification if prompted. Use YouTube’s official verification flow. If it fails, check that you are in the correct account and try again later; the sources do not establish a universal quota or regional rule.
- Refresh and check both clients. Confirm you saved the change, then reopen the playlist on web and mobile. The artwork may take time to synchronize, and the crop or display can differ between surfaces.
- Test another editable playlist. If the control works there, the first playlist may be a special or non-editable type.
- If controls are still absent, try another supported browser or sign out and back in. The feature may not yet be available to your account or client.
If you want to restore the default artwork, reopen the editor and look for Remove custom image or a similar option. Earlier rollout reporting described that control returning the playlist to its generated 2×2 grid; it removes the custom image, not the playlist. The exact label may vary. (9to5Google.)
How this compares with Spotify
Spotify’s help page more explicitly documents playlist-cover changes across mobile, tablet, desktop, and web, as well as a built-in cover-art creator. YouTube Music’s history has been less consistent across clients: web upload was prominent in early rollout reports, while current Google instructions describe broader playlist-thumbnail options. This is a difference in documented workflows, not a guarantee that every Spotify or YouTube Music account has identical controls. (Spotify support.)

You do not need a paid design service just to change a cover. You can use an image you already have and the built-in crop tools. For a more designed result, a template editor such as Canva or Adobe Express is optional; check its current features and pricing before choosing a plan.
