To add a countdown, upload your video in YouTube Studio, schedule it as a public Premiere, then select Set as Premiere and Set up Premiere. Choose a countdown theme and length from the menus before you finish scheduling. The countdown is part of the Premiere event, not the video file viewers can watch afterward.
Set up a Premiere countdown in YouTube Studio

Sign in to YouTube Studio and upload the video you want to premiere.

At the Visibility step, schedule the upload as a public video. Choose a date and time for a future event, or use the instant Premiere option if it is available in your flow.

Select Set as Premiere, then select Set up Premiere.

In the setup dialog, choose a countdown theme and a countdown length from the menus. YouTube’s help page confirms both controls, but does not enumerate every available theme or length; rely on the options shown in your Studio dialog.

Select Done or Schedule, as shown in your interface, to finish. You can follow YouTube’s Premiere customization guide and Premiere setup instructions.

What the countdown does—and does not do
YouTube describes a live countdown video before a Premiere. Its customization guidance says viewers see the countdown two minutes before the Premiere starts; the Premiere guide explains that the selected theme begins at the scheduled time and runs for the length you chose. When the countdown ends, viewers watch the video together in real time. The countdown theme is not added to the uploaded video, so it will not appear in the finished video after the event.
Share the watch page and build anticipation
Scheduling creates a public watch page you can share ahead of time. Viewers can set a reminder there; YouTube says the reminder triggers one notification about 30 minutes before the Premiere and another when it starts. YouTube recommends scheduling at least 24 hours ahead to give audiences in different time zones an opportunity to see the thumbnail in their subscriptions feed, and suggests sharing the watch page to promote the event. Optional: add a trailer to the watch page
A trailer is separate from the countdown: it plays on the Premiere watch page before the event. YouTube’s customization instructions say trailers are available to creators with more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes. A trailer must be 15 seconds to 3 minutes long, use supported video, comply with rights and Community Guidelines requirements, and cannot be a video that has already premiered. YouTube recommends matching the trailer’s aspect ratio and resolution to the Premiere video. Check the current trailer and Premiere customization guidance before preparing one.
Why “Set up Premiere” may not appear

The video is not being set as a Premiere. In the Visibility step, make sure you select Set as Premiere; then look for Set up Premiere.

The format or output is unsupported. YouTube lists Shorts, 360/VR180 videos, and outputs above 1080p as unsupported for Premieres. Check the video format and output settings against YouTube’s Premiere requirements.

The account is in a Community Guidelines strike penalty period. YouTube says an account with a strike cannot publish a Premiere during the penalty period; the Premiere is set to private until the creator can reschedule it after the freeze period.

The menus differ from a guide or screenshot. YouTube does not enumerate every currently selectable countdown theme or length in the cited help page. Choose from the options displayed in your own setup dialog.
