How to Add a Countdown Between Videos in a Continuous YouTube Stream

Add a countdown between videos in a continuous YouTube stream by placing a rendered clip in an OBS VLC playlist, or build a separate countdown scene and switch to it deliberately.

To show a countdown between videos in a continuous YouTube stream, put the countdown into the video sequence OBS sends to YouTube. The simplest dependable method is to add a rendered countdown clip between your videos in an OBS VLC Video playlist. A separate OBS countdown scene gives you more control, but you must arrange a separate scene switch; a playlist ending does not automatically trigger one.

Method 1: Add a countdown clip to an OBS playlist

This approach makes the countdown a fixed part of the playback sequence. OBS’s VLC Video source supports playlists and looping, and requires VLC Media Player. See the OBS Media Sources guide.

  1. Install OBS Studio and VLC Media Player. If your OBS installation is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC so the VLC Video source can use it.
  2. Create the countdown clip. Choose the break length and render a countdown video to match your program’s resolution and frame rate where practical. Decide whether it should include audio, and check the clip’s duration before adding it.
  3. Add a VLC Video source in OBS. Add your program videos and countdown clip to its playlist in the order you want them played. Put the countdown between the videos it separates.
  4. Set playlist behavior. Enable looping if the sequence should repeat. Leave shuffle off when the videos and countdown must stay in the specified order.
  5. Send OBS’s program output to YouTube. Use the encoder and stream setup shown in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube documents HLS as one protocol option, but it has its own encoder requirements and higher latency than RTMP; a countdown does not require changing protocols. See YouTube’s HLS setup guide.
  6. Rehearse the full sequence. Check the end of each video, the countdown’s visuals and audio, the transition into the next video, and what happens when the playlist loops. Check the OBS preview and the resulting YouTube output. OBS recommends testing before a live stream in its Overview Guide.

Method 2: Use a separate countdown scene

A separate scene is useful when you want to adjust the countdown’s appearance or use a timer rather than a fixed clip. It is not automatically inserted at playlist boundaries: you need a configured way to switch into and out of the scene.

  1. Create a break scene in OBS. Add a Media Source for a countdown clip, or use a text or browser source for a timer. OBS supports layering sources, so arrange the countdown above the background or video it should cover. See the OBS Sources guide.
  2. Arrange the scene change. Switch to the break scene and then to the next video using a scene transition or configured hotkey. OBS documents hotkeys for switching to a specific scene in its Overview Guide.
  3. Test the trigger and timing. Confirm that the break starts at the intended point and that you can switch back reliably. Do not assume that the VLC playlist ending or looping will trigger a scene switch.

A Stream Deck can be configured as optional manual hotkey control, but it is not required to generate a countdown, and the cited documentation does not establish automatic video-end detection or playlist-boundary countdown insertion from the device.

Which method fits your stream?

Consideration Countdown clip in playlist Separate countdown scene
How it runs A fixed clip is an ordered playlist item. Requires a separately configured scene switch.
Setup Add the clip between video items and set playlist order. Build the scene, arrange its sources, and configure a reliable switch.
Changing length or appearance Edit or replace the rendered clip. Adjust the scene or timer setup.
Loop behavior Test the complete ordered playlist, including its loop. Do not rely on playlist looping to trigger the scene; test the switch separately.

Why YouTube’s “Take a Break” countdown is different

YouTube Live Control Room includes a “Take a Break” feature with an away slate and countdown. YouTube says the break does not automatically end when the timer reaches zero; the operator must end it in Live Control Room. That makes it useful for an operator-controlled pause, not a documented way to place recurring countdowns between items in an encoder playlist. YouTube also describes browser-source overlays and Stream Deck integration for ad management; these do not replace arranging the countdown in your program sequence. See YouTube’s live monetization help.

Troubleshooting

  • VLC Video is missing from OBS’s source menu: Install VLC and check that its architecture matches OBS. For 64-bit OBS, OBS specifies 64-bit VLC.
  • The playlist plays items in the wrong order: Check the playlist order and make sure shuffle is off.
  • The countdown scene does not appear at a video boundary: Configure a separate scene switch or use a countdown clip as a playlist item. Playlist looping does not itself establish an automatic scene trigger.
  • The countdown covers the wrong source: Reorder sources in the OBS list. Sources higher in the list appear over sources beneath them.
  • The live sequence differs from the OBS preview: Rehearse the entire sequence and inspect the rendered YouTube output, including the transition and loop, before relying on it live.
