How to Make FFmpeg Recover a YouTube Live Loop After a Network Drop

FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can retry a dropped output connection while the process remains alive. Learn the settings, limits, and separate steps for restarting FFmpeg itself.

To recover a YouTube Live loop after a brief network drop, keep FFmpeg running and send its RTMP output through FFmpeg’s fifo muxer with recovery enabled. FFmpeg’s documented example retries output recovery every second indefinitely. If FFmpeg itself exits, that is a different failure: a process supervisor can start it again, but a new process is not guaranteed to resume the same YouTube live event.

First identify which failure you need to recover from

A network interruption can break the connection between FFmpeg and YouTube while the FFmpeg process continues running. The FIFO muxer recovery pattern addresses this output failure. If FFmpeg crashes, is killed, or otherwise exits, FIFO cannot restart the process; you need an external supervisor for that separate case.

  • FFmpeg is still running, output connection dropped: configure FIFO output recovery.
  • FFmpeg exited: use a process supervisor or service manager to restart the command, then test whether YouTube accepts the new connection for your event.

Do not treat FFmpeg’s HTTP -reconnect options as a fix for an RTMP publishing connection. Those options describe HTTP protocol behavior, such as reconnecting an HTTP input; FFmpeg does not document them as controls for reconnecting an RTMP output.

Configure FFmpeg’s FIFO output recovery

FFmpeg’s official manual gives this pattern for continuing real-time processing through a temporary network failure and attempting recovery every second:

ffmpeg -re -i INPUT -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f fifo -fifo_format flv
  -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
  -map 0:v -map 0:a rtmp://example.com/live/stream_name

This is a documented pattern, not a universal copy-and-run command. Replace INPUT, the encoding options, stream mappings, and destination with values for your actual source and YouTube ingest URL. The example’s real-time input flag and encoding choices are illustrative; they are not requirements for every existing pipeline. Check the FIFO muxer options against the FFmpeg build you have installed.

  1. Choose the source and mappings. Set -i to your video or playlist input and map the audio and video streams that actually exist. If your input has no audio, do not blindly retain -map 0:a; map the streams your source provides.
  2. Set the output format. The example wraps an FLV output in FIFO using -f fifo -fifo_format flv, suitable for the RTMP-style publishing pattern shown. Use the ingest URL and stream key details provided by YouTube for your live setup.
  3. Enable recovery. -attempt_recovery 1 enables attempts, while -recovery_wait_time 1 sets the example’s one-second interval between attempts.
  4. Decide how to handle queue overflow. -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 allows packets to be dropped if the FIFO queue overflows. That helps avoid accumulating a growing backlog, but dropped packets mean missing audio or video; recovery cannot reconstruct them.

The FIFO muxer also documents an option to wait for a keyframe after recovery from queue overflow or failure; its default is false. Waiting for a keyframe may improve the point at which usable video resumes, but can add a short delay. Consult the FIFO muxer documentation for the exact option name and behavior in your installed version: FFmpeg documentation.

Set YouTube-compatible output and keyframes

YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. Use the RTMPS ingest endpoint when it is available for your setup and ensure the output protocol and destination match the URL supplied in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s live encoder guidance describes its protocol recommendation.

YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Configure the encoder’s keyframe frequency accordingly; the exact FFmpeg encoder option depends on your codec and frame rate, so do not assume one command value fits every pipeline. The keyframe interval is separate from FIFO’s recovery retry interval.

Restart FFmpeg if the process exits

If FFmpeg terminates, configure an external process supervisor or service manager to relaunch the command. This is process-level recovery, not a replacement for FIFO’s output recovery: it starts a new encoder process, and official guidance does not guarantee that YouTube will attach that process to the same live event or preserve continuity.

Keep the stream key out of public scripts, shared service files, and logs. Restrict access to the configuration that contains it, and avoid printing the full command line in places others can read. Before relying on automatic restarts, test what your account and event do when the process is deliberately stopped and relaunched.

Test a network drop and a process restart separately

  1. Set up a private or otherwise safe test stream with audio and movement similar to the real loop.
  2. Start FFmpeg and check its logs alongside YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages.
  3. Briefly interrupt the outbound network while leaving FFmpeg running. Confirm whether FIFO attempts recovery, whether YouTube sees the stream again, and whether the returned picture and sound are usable.
  4. In a separate test, deliberately terminate FFmpeg and let the supervisor restart it. Observe whether the existing event accepts the new process or whether you need to take another action in Live Control Room.
  5. Test a longer interruption if it is realistic for your setup. A brief recovery test cannot establish what will happen after a prolonged outage.

YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health and messages during the event. The result of either recovery test depends on your FFmpeg build, source, network, ingest destination, and event state; neither FIFO recovery nor a supervisor guarantees continuity in every case.

Troubleshoot the common failure cases

  • FFmpeg keeps running but never reconnects: confirm that the output is actually using FIFO with recovery enabled, check the destination URL and credentials, and inspect FFmpeg’s error messages. HTTP reconnect flags do not solve an RTMP output failure.
  • The stream returns with missing media or a jump: packet dropping during FIFO overflow can create a gap. Review whether dropping packets is preferable to building a delayed backlog for your loop, and test the keyframe-wait option if a clean video restart matters.
  • YouTube does not resume the original event: if FFmpeg exited, the supervisor created a new process, not a guaranteed continuation. Test the restart behavior with the same event workflow you intend to use live.
  • Video or audio is absent after restart: verify input stream availability and the -map selections; the example assumes both audio and video are present.
  • Recovery works in a short test but not a long outage: the documented retry interval does not guarantee that the destination will accept a connection after every outage duration. Validate the actual event and account behavior under realistic conditions.
  • The command fails on an option: FFmpeg manuals and builds can differ over time. Check the installed build and its FIFO muxer options rather than assuming the current online manual exactly matches it.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is an always-on YouTube loop rather than maintaining an FFmpeg host and restart setup, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It streams the file as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream.
