How to Add a Countdown and Schedule to a 24/7 YouTube Lofi Radio Stream

YouTube scheduling creates an event page, not an on-screen timer. Add the countdown to the video production, connect the encoder, and plan 24/7 continuity separately.

Use two separate setups: schedule the stream in YouTube Studio to create a public event page viewers can share and set reminders for, then add the visible countdown and schedule to the video your encoder sends. Scheduling alone does not put a timer on screen.

What YouTube scheduling does—and what it does not do

YouTube Studio’s scheduled live stream gives viewers an upcoming watch page they can share and use to set reminders. YouTube Help describes the purpose this way: “Scheduling a stream lets you promote your stream. Viewers can get reminders on upcoming streams, you can share the URL on social media, and more.” It does not add a countdown graphic to the outgoing video; the timer must be part of the video production.

The encoder sends the audiovisual feed to YouTube using the Live server URL and stream key. You can create the countdown as an encoder overlay or render it into a video source before streaming. YouTube documents encoder streaming and overlays as a production method, but does not prescribe or certify a particular countdown widget. See YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Get started with live streaming.

Choose how the countdown will appear

Overlay from the encoder

Use this route if your encoder already composes the lofi feed and can place graphics over it. Add a readable countdown and, if useful, the upcoming program time or schedule. You control placement and timing; the encoder must remain connected and functioning for the local feed to continue.

Countdown rendered into the video

If your encoder cannot add graphics, make a countdown clip or render the timer and schedule into the video source it plays. For a countdown that appears only before a program starts, arrange for the production to switch from the countdown clip or scene to the regular lofi loop. For recurring countdowns, arrange those transitions in your production schedule. These are production choices, not automatic functions of a scheduled YouTube event.

Schedule the YouTube event and connect the encoder

  1. Create the event: In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live → Manage → Schedule Stream. Create a new stream or reuse settings. Check the current Live Control Room labels if the interface has changed. The resulting scheduled watch page is the place to share the event and let viewers set reminders.
  2. Connect the feed: Choose YouTube as the encoder destination if it is available. Otherwise, copy the YouTube Live server URL into the encoder’s server field and paste the stream key into its stream-key field. Keep the key private.
  3. Build the countdown into the outgoing video: Add the overlay in the encoder or prepare a pre-rendered source. Decide whether the countdown runs once before the lofi program or recurs at particular times, then configure the scene or clip changes accordingly.
  4. Check both viewer experiences: Confirm the scheduled watch page in Studio, then inspect the encoder preview to verify the countdown and schedule are actually visible and legible in the video. YouTube recommends waiting for the preview before going live with a scheduled encoder stream.
  5. Start the scheduled stream: Follow the Live Control Room’s scheduled-stream workflow after the preview is ready. The event page and the video image are separate: verify each rather than assuming one configures the other.

Plan for a genuinely continuous 24/7 feed

A single continuous broadcast and a schedule of separate broadcasts are different arrangements. YouTube’s API documentation models a video-carrying stream resource separately from the viewer-facing broadcast resource. Its documented patterns include binding scheduled broadcasts to a stream, and using a separate event broadcast alongside a continuous broadcast. These are API-level patterns; they do not mean a Studio control automatically creates countdown graphics or event transitions. See YouTube Live Streaming API: Understanding broadcasts and streams and the LiveBroadcasts API reference.

The API reference says that if a broadcast’s scheduled end time is omitted, it is treated as continuing indefinitely; it also exposes auto-start and auto-stop settings. This describes API behavior, not a guarantee that every setup will remain connected indefinitely.

Plan archives separately from continuity. YouTube Help says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That documented behavior applies to streams under 12 hours; do not count on one uninterrupted stream longer than 12 hours becoming an automatic archive. If you need replays, plan shorter events or another deliberate archive workflow and verify the options currently available in Studio.
