To recover a 24/7 fireplace stream after OBS crashes, you need two separate safeguards: a process supervisor that relaunches OBS, and YouTube broadcast settings that let the restarted encoder reconnect to the intended live event. OBS’s automatic reconnect can restore a dropped connection while OBS is still open; it cannot reopen OBS after the application exits. Test both parts together before relying on them unattended.
Build a recovery chain, not just an OBS reconnect setting
A fireplace stream can fail in several different ways. OBS might close, remain open but lose its connection, or struggle to render and encode the scene. A power interruption is another case. Each needs a different response:
- OBS exits: use Windows Task Scheduler or a suitable Linux service supervisor to relaunch the process.
- OBS stays open but disconnects: OBS automatic reconnect may help, while the network and ingest path need investigation.
- Rendering or encoding falls behind: reduce scene complexity or output demands, then validate the encoder.
- Power fails: a UPS may bridge some interruptions, depending on its capacity, but it does not restart crashed software.
OBS’s official launch guide documents automated launch parameters, while its overview guide lists automatic reconnect as an OBS setting: OBS Launch Parameters and OBS Studio Overview Guide.
Set up OBS to start again after a crash
Windows: Task Scheduler and OBS launch parameters
- Confirm the normal launch first. In OBS, select the profile, scene collection, and YouTube destination you intend to use. Verify the correct stream key is selected and that the fireplace video or playlist is ready.
- Use the documented start parameter. OBS supports
--startstreamingto begin streaming when launched. Test the exact launch configuration while you can monitor YouTube; do not assume a restarted app will select the right profile, scene, account, or live event automatically. The launch-parameter documentation is at obsproject.com/kb/launch-parameters. - Create a scheduled task or equivalent supervisor. Configure Windows Task Scheduler to launch OBS at the appropriate time, including at system startup if recovery after a reboot is required. Set the task’s working directory to the folder containing
obs64.exe, as OBS recommends for automated launches. - Configure restart-on-failure behavior. Microsoft documents a restart-on-failure setting for scheduled tasks. Configure a delay or restart limit where available, and ensure the task cannot start duplicate OBS instances. See Microsoft’s RestartOnFailure documentation.
- Check the task history and stream. A successful application launch is not proof that the broadcast recovered. Verify the OBS process, its streaming status, and the viewer-facing YouTube event.
Linux: systemd, with the right session environment
On Linux, systemd can restart a service after failure; its service configuration supports policies such as Restart=on-failure. OBS is a graphical application, however, and putting it under service supervision does not by itself provide a usable display, audio devices, permissions, or login session. A service wrapper and environment appropriate to the host are required, and the complete launch-and-stream path must be validated. See the systemd.service manual.

Prevent a restart loop from making things worse
A supervisor can repeatedly relaunch an application that immediately crashes. Use a restart delay or limit, prevent multiple simultaneous OBS instances, and arrange for a person to be alerted if failures continue. These are operational safeguards, not a guarantee that OBS or the stream will recover.
Make sure YouTube can accept the restarted stream
OBS recovery and YouTube’s broadcast lifecycle are separate. A restarted encoder may not restore the viewer-facing event if the broadcast has ended, the wrong key is loaded, or YouTube requires a manual action. YouTube documents creating and managing stream keys and reusing stream settings in Manage live stream settings.

An OBS Project community guide describes scheduled-stream behavior, including auto-start and auto-stop settings. It notes that disabling auto-stop can allow reconnection after a brief disconnection, but also warns that a broadcast can eventually end after receiving no stream data for multiple hours. Because those details come from a guide last updated in 2021 and platform labels can change, check the current controls in YouTube Live Control Room rather than relying on an old menu path: How to stream to YouTube with OBS Studio.
Test a planned interruption
- Schedule or prepare the YouTube broadcast and note the selected stream key and lifecycle settings.
- While monitoring the channel, stop OBS or simulate a controlled process failure.
- Confirm the supervisor relaunches OBS with the intended profile and starts streaming if that is how you configured it.
- Check that YouTube has resumed the intended viewer-facing event and that viewers can see the restored fireplace stream.
- Repeat after a host reboot if recovery from a power outage or restart is part of your plan.
This test checks the complete chain. It is not a guarantee against future failures, and it should be repeated after changing profiles, keys, task settings, or YouTube broadcast controls.

Identify what actually failed
OBS closed unexpectedly
Inspect OBS logs or crash reports and the operating system’s task or service history. Confirm the supervisor attempted the restart, launched only one instance, and used the expected working directory and OBS configuration. OBS’s launch guide covers its automation parameters: Launch Parameters.
OBS is open, but the stream disconnects or drops frames
This may be a connection problem rather than a process crash. OBS says dropped frames indicate an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Check the network route, bitrate, VPN or firewall interference, and the ingest connection. Dynamic bitrate may mitigate symptoms, but lowering bitrate dynamically does not fix the underlying connection problem. See OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting.

OBS’s troubleshooting page states: “It is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames.” Its Help Portal explains: “OBS opts to drop the frames to avoid buffering and keep your stream playing.” Those statements concern dropped frames, not all causes of OBS crashes. Sources: Stream Connection Troubleshooting and OBS Help Portal.
The stream is overloaded or OBS becomes unstable under load
There is no single hardware change that guarantees crash-free operation. OBS workload varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; simpler scenes can reduce resource demands. A fireplace scene with browser sources, animated overlays, filters, or multiple media sources may be more demanding than a single video source. Check OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guidance and Hardware Encoding documentation. A supported hardware encoder can reduce CPU encoding work, but it is not a crash-prevention guarantee. OBS also cautions that meeting baseline system requirements does not guarantee a system can stream a particular workload.

The computer lost power
A UPS sized for the computer and network equipment may keep them powered through some short interruptions. Its effectiveness depends on load and battery capacity. It cannot relaunch OBS after a software crash or restore an internet connection that has failed.
