Sky does not currently list an app for Android TV or NVIDIA SHIELD TV. You can try sideloading the Android phone-and-tablet app, but that is an unsupported experiment: it may install and still fail to navigate or play video. For reliable viewing, use a device Sky supports, or try casting or a laptop connected to your TV.
This guide covers Sky’s UK and Republic of Ireland service. Sky Go is included at no extra cost for eligible Sky TV customers, subject to their package, device compatibility and account limits; it is not a standalone US streaming service.
Check your Sky account and device first
You need an eligible Sky TV subscription, a Sky iD, an internet connection and access to Sky Go in your country or territory. What you can watch depends on your Sky package. Device registration and simultaneous-stream limits also apply. Sky Go Extra can expand viewing allowances, but it does not make SHIELD an officially supported device. Its availability and terms depend on your Sky arrangement.

The list and minimum software versions can change, so check Sky’s current device and system requirements before relying on a particular device.

- Android phones and tablets: Android 7.0 or later is listed.
- Apple devices: iPhone and iPad with iOS 13 or later; Apple TV HD (fourth generation) and Apple TV 4K (first and second generation) with tvOS 13 or later are listed.
- Chromebook: Android 7.0 is listed.
- Windows and Mac: Windows 10 or 11, and macOS 11, are listed for the desktop app.
- Consoles: PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles.
The version numbers shown in Sky’s requirements table can change with updates; use the live table rather than treating any listed app version as permanent.
1. Check the SHIELD Play Store
- On SHIELD, open Apps or the Google Play Store.
- Search for Sky Go.
- If a compatible TV app appears, check that Sky is the publisher and that the Play Store identifies it as compatible with your device before installing.
The likely result is that no compatible Sky Go app appears. That reflects the distinction between Android for phones and tablets and Android TV: an app built for one is not automatically compatible with the other. NVIDIA identifies Google Play as the supported way to install Android TV apps; finding a mobile APK elsewhere does not establish SHIELD support. See NVIDIA’s Android TV app and sideloading guidance.

2. Sideloading the Android app: an unsupported experiment
NVIDIA says Android TV can technically sideload apps that are absent from its Play Store, but warns that sideloading is not officially supported and can cause security, stability or performance problems. Sky’s Android listing is for phones and tablets, not SHIELD. Installation is not proof that sign-in or playback will work.
If you are comfortable with those risks, the general process is:

- Install a reputable file-transfer or file-manager app from the SHIELD Play Store.
- Get the Sky Go app only through a legitimate, verifiable source. Sky’s official Android page is the first-party reference; it does not claim SHIELD compatibility. Avoid random APK sites, which can expose your device and Sky credentials to tampered software.
- In SHIELD’s settings, find the security or app-permissions option for the installer and allow that app to install unknown applications. Labels and menu paths vary by SHIELD Experience version.
- Open the APK and follow the installation prompts. Some Android apps arrive as split packages rather than a single APK; if the installer cannot handle the package, stop rather than downloading a different build from an untrusted source.
- If Sky Go does not appear on the home screen, check the full app list. A sideload launcher may expose apps without an Android TV home-screen entry.
- Try signing in and testing both live and on-demand playback. If you are done experimenting, uninstall Sky Go and turn off the installer app’s permission to install unknown apps.
A phone-and-tablet app may expect a touchscreen, portrait layout or phone-sized display. The SHIELD remote may not navigate it properly; a mouse or keyboard can help, but cannot fix incompatibility. Playback can also fail because of DRM, device or operating-system checks, display restrictions, or a later Sky app update. Do not assume that changing settings or trying another APK will make the setup supported.
3. Try casting from a phone or tablet
SHIELD has Chromecast built in. For Google Cast, connect the SHIELD and the source device to the same network, open a Cast-enabled app, tap its Cast icon and select SHIELD. NVIDIA notes that casting availability varies by app and country; this does not confirm that Sky Go supports casting.

If Sky Go displays a Cast button, try it. If there is no Cast button, direct casting may not be available in your version of the app. Generic screen mirroring is less dependable: protected video may show a black screen or play audio only. Treat casting as a fallback, not a guaranteed Sky Go solution. NVIDIA’s SHIELD casting instructions explain the connection process.

4. Connect a supported laptop to the TV
If you already have a compatible Windows or Mac computer, using Sky Go’s desktop app over HDMI is often more practical than trying to make the mobile app work on SHIELD:

- Install Sky Go on a computer that meets Sky’s current desktop requirements.
- Connect the laptop to the TV with HDMI, or with a suitable USB-C-to-HDMI adapter if the laptop requires one.
- Select the corresponding HDMI input on the TV, then sign in to Sky Go on the laptop and start playback.
This is not guaranteed on every computer and display path. HDCP protection, display drivers, the app and account restrictions can affect playback. If the picture is blank, check the cable, TV input and display connection, and test Sky Go on the laptop screen before concluding the account or subscription is at fault.

- Apple TV: A useful TV-native option if you have a model Sky currently lists. Sky’s requirements table names Apple TV HD (fourth generation) and Apple TV 4K (first and second generation); check the live list before buying, because supported models can change.
- PlayStation or Xbox: Sky lists supported PlayStation and Xbox generations. Console viewing may require a qualifying arrangement such as Sky TV Multiscreen, Sky Streaming TV Whole Home or Sky Go Extra, depending on your service. Check Sky’s console guidance and your account before relying on this route. If you already own a console, it may be a convenient option; buying one solely for Sky Go is a bigger commitment.
- Sky Stream puck: This is a separate Sky TV product, not a Sky Go app for Android TV. It connects to a television by HDMI and uses power and Wi-Fi. It is the purpose-built option for watching Sky TV on another television, but costs and eligibility can depend on your subscription, Whole Home arrangement and setup. - Phone, tablet or laptop: Use Sky Go directly on a supported device if watching on its own screen is acceptable. A laptop connected to the TV is another option when you already have the equipment.
SHIELD remains useful for its supported Android TV apps and casting, but buying one specifically for Sky Go is not a dependable solution. Sky Go Extra may change the number of devices or streams your account allows; it does not add Android TV to Sky’s compatibility list.
Troubleshooting

Which route should you use?
For dependable television playback, start with a device Sky officially lists. If you already have a supported laptop, HDMI is a practical route; if you own a qualifying console or listed Apple TV model, check your account and model eligibility. Try casting only if Sky Go offers the Cast control. Sideloading is for technically confident users willing to accept that the app may install yet still fail, and it should not be represented as an official SHIELD solution.
