Short answer: From Canada, you can try connecting to a U.S. server with a reputable VPN, then reopen Netflix and test playback. It is not guaranteed: Netflix detects and blocks VPN connections, and may show a proxy error or only globally available titles. Netflix also says VPNs are unsupported on its ad-supported plan. If your main reason for using a VPN is security on public Wi‑Fi, treat catalogue access as an uncertain extra—not a promise.
What you can—and cannot—change
A VPN routes your internet traffic through a server in another location. Connecting to a U.S. server can make your connection appear to come from the United States, but it does not change where you physically are, your citizenship, your billing country, or the licensing rights attached to a title. Netflix decides what to show based on its own systems and distribution rights.
That distinction matters in three situations:
- Travelling in the United States: Netflix says the available selection can differ when you travel. This is not the same as remaining in Canada and routing through a VPN.
- Staying in Canada and trying for the U.S. catalogue: A VPN may change the apparent network location, but Netflix can identify the connection as a VPN or proxy and limit access.
- Using a U.S. account: A separate U.S. account is not a dependable workaround. Netflix documents location and payment issues, including problems with accounts obtained from unauthorized sources. Avoid buying pre-made accounts from online marketplaces. Netflix’s account-location guidance explains some of these cases.
Netflix says people using a VPN may see only titles available worldwide. A loaded homepage—or a U.S. location shown in a VPN app—does not prove that you are seeing the U.S. catalogue. The useful test is whether the title appears and plays. See Netflix’s VPN and proxy guidance.

- Confirm your plan. Netflix says VPNs are not supported on its ad-supported experience. If you have an ad-supported plan, do not expect this method to work; see Netflix’s plan-specific VPN help.
- Check device support. Computers, phones, tablets, TVs, streaming players and game consoles can all be used to watch Netflix, but that does not mean every device can install a VPN app. Check the VPN provider’s official app list for your exact device and operating system. Netflix lists its viewing categories at Netflix Canada.
- Use official software. Get the VPN app from the provider’s official website or your device’s official app store. Avoid unofficial APKs, browser extensions from unknown publishers and repackaged installers.
- Choose for security and support, not a guarantee. Review the provider’s privacy information, security features, device support, troubleshooting help, refund terms and renewal price. A provider’s claim that it works with streaming services cannot guarantee continued access.
- Accept that playback may fail. Server availability and Netflix’s detection rules change. A server that worked previously may be blocked later.
A VPN protects traffic between your device and the VPN service, which can be useful on a network you do not trust. It does not make you anonymous, guarantee safe browsing, or override Netflix’s controls. It also moves trust from your internet provider or local network to the VPN provider. Use a strong, unique VPN password, enable multifactor authentication if offered, and keep the app and operating system updated. Avoid using an unfamiliar VPN endpoint for sensitive services such as banking.

VPN use for region-restricted content may interact with Netflix’s terms and your provider’s terms. Netflix may limit what you can watch when it detects a VPN. Review the current Netflix Terms of Use and applicable Canadian law; do not treat a VPN as permission to bypass restrictions.
Set up a VPN and test Netflix
- Select a reputable provider and check the terms. Look for a kill switch, DNS-leak protection, clear privacy information, support for your devices and a refund policy. Check renewal pricing as well as any introductory offer.
- Install the official app and sign in. Do not install a second VPN or a separate location-changing tool at the same time.
- Turn on available protections. Enable the kill switch so traffic does not fall back to your ordinary Canadian connection if the VPN disconnects. Enable DNS-leak protection, if the app provides it.
- Connect to a U.S. server. Use a server offered by the app; avoid relying on a particular city name because server lists change.
- Check the apparent location. Visit Fast.com, wait for the test to finish, select Show more info, and look at the country beside Client. Netflix recommends this check in its proxy-error troubleshooting. If it does not show the expected country, the VPN may not be routing that device’s traffic as intended.
- Fully close and reopen Netflix. Then search for the title and try to play it. A changed homepage or catalogue row alone is not proof of access. If a browser session appears stale, try a private window; clearing Netflix site data is another possible session-refresh step, not a fix for server-side blocking.
- Disconnect when finished if you want your usual connection back. This returns Netflix and other services on that device to the ordinary Canadian connection, assuming no other VPN or network routing tool is active.
If Netflix shows a VPN or proxy error
The message “You seem to be using a VPN or proxy” is Netflix’s central failure mode for this method. Netflix’s official recommendation is to turn off VPN or proxy services. The error by itself does not show that your VPN is insecure; it means Netflix is not allowing playback over that connection. Netflix documents error M7037-1111 and the Fast.com check in its help article.
If you still want to troubleshoot, try these steps in order and stop if the connection remains blocked:

- Confirm that your Netflix plan is not ad-supported.
- Check that the VPN app says it is connected to a U.S. server, then verify the client country at Fast.com.
- Completely close and reopen the Netflix app or browser. If needed, test once in a private browser window.
- Try another U.S. server offered by the same provider. A different endpoint may behave differently, but there is no guarantee it will work.
- Turn off conflicting location or filtering tools, such as a second VPN, proxy settings, an antivirus product’s VPN module, Smart DNS or a router-level DNS service. Browser Secure DNS or DNS-over-HTTPS settings can also conflict with a VPN in some configurations; this is browser- and provider-specific, not a universal fix. - Try Netflix in a browser if the app fails, or the app if the browser fails. Then restart the device and, if the network still appears stuck, the router.
- Contact the VPN provider if its documentation covers your device and setup. Do not assume support can make a blocked server work.
- Disconnect the VPN and check that ordinary Canadian Netflix works. If it does not, troubleshoot the normal network connection separately.
If Netflix loads but shows only worldwide titles, that is not the same as accessing the U.S. catalogue. Netflix says this limited selection can occur when it detects a VPN. Repeatedly changing profiles or clearing cookies will not override a server-side block. If a specific title remains unavailable, consider a legitimate Canadian rental or purchase service, or wait for Canadian availability.
Other location and account errors
Netflix’s Error 115 guidance covers network problems and cases where a device appears to connect from an unsupported location. Check the internet connection and whether a VPN is active; if the message continues, follow Netflix’s instructions for that specific device and error.
Location-related account errors can also have nothing to do with VPN detection. Netflix identifies travel, a recent move, bundled memberships and accounts from unauthorized sources as possible contexts in its account-location help. Do not buy a discounted account from an unknown seller as a workaround: access, payment and account ownership may become separate problems.

Why it may work on a laptop but not a TV
A VPN connection applies to the device or network routed through it. Connecting a phone to a VPN does not automatically route a separate TV’s traffic through the same tunnel, and casting may use the receiving device’s connection rather than the phone’s. Choose a setup that explicitly supports the device you want to watch on:

- Computer, phone or tablet: Install the provider’s official app directly on the device, if supported.
- Smart TV or streaming device: Check whether the provider offers an official app for the exact platform. Do not assume all TVs or streaming sticks support VPN apps.
- TV without a compatible app: A compatible router configured for VPN use can route connected devices through the VPN, but setup, speed and support depend on the router and provider. A VPN-enabled hotspot may be another option if your equipment supports it.
- Game console: Direct VPN apps are not universal. A compatible router or computer-based connection sharing may be necessary; confirm the method with the console, router and VPN documentation before changing network settings.
These workarounds add complexity and may reduce speed. For a TV or streaming device, wired Ethernet can help with network stability, but it will not fix Netflix’s VPN detection.
Buffering and video quality
A VPN adds a network hop and can reduce throughput. If playback is choppy, choose a geographically close U.S. server and, if the app shows server load, try one with lighter load. Use the provider’s recommended modern protocol, compare speed with the VPN on and off, and use Ethernet for a stationary TV where practical. A higher Netflix plan will not fix congestion between your device, VPN server and Netflix. There is no reliable quality or 4K guarantee without testing the exact device, connection and server.

How to choose a VPN for this use
Do not select a VPN solely because a marketing page says it “unblocks Netflix.” Compare the features that matter to your actual setup:

| Connection stability and U.S. server options | A blocked or unstable endpoint can make playback unusable; server lists and availability change. |
| Router support and simultaneous connections | These can matter in a household with devices that cannot run VPN apps directly. |
| Refund conditions and renewal price | An introductory rate may differ substantially from the automatic renewal price. Check the checkout terms and cancellation deadline. |
Free VPNs are often a poor fit for streaming: heavily reused server addresses may be blocked, performance and support can be inconsistent, and privacy and monetization practices vary. That does not mean every free VPN sells data; read the provider’s privacy policy rather than assuming. Do not pay for a long commitment just because a provider advertises Netflix access. Treat the U.S. catalogue as an uncertain secondary use, and test within any refund period while respecting its terms.

Smart DNS may be simpler to configure on some TVs and can have less speed overhead than a VPN, but it is not the same privacy tool. It generally does not provide the encrypted tunnel of a VPN, and Netflix can still detect or block it. Do not use Smart DNS as a substitute for connection security on public Wi‑Fi.

If the title is the main goal rather than network privacy, check the Canadian Netflix catalogue, a legitimate Canadian rental or purchase option, or whether the title becomes available through an official Canadian release. These options avoid relying on a changing VPN endpoint. A U.S. account is not a dependable substitute for checking availability and payment-country conditions.
Terms, provider claims and buying cautiously
VPN providers’ streaming instructions and terms are not a guarantee of Netflix access. For example, NordVPN’s troubleshooting page addresses cases where Netflix fails, while ExpressVPN’s streaming guidance and terms call for users to comply with applicable terms and laws. Read current provider terms and Netflix’s current rules before subscribing or using a VPN for this purpose.
Prices, renewal rates, server availability and streaming behaviour change. Compare the live price for your country and billing period, including tax and renewal terms, rather than relying on an old monthly-equivalent offer. A refund window can reduce the risk of buying a service that does not suit your devices, but it does not turn access into a guarantee.
