Roman Reigns lost the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship to Cody Rhodes in the WrestleMania 40 Night 2 main event. In Wrestling Inc.’s account of the finish, Seth Rollins appeared in Shield gear and distracted Reigns, giving Rhodes an opening to hit three consecutive Cross Rhodes and win. That detail helps explain the sequence, but it does not establish that Rollins alone caused the loss or confirm WWE’s creative intent.
What happened in the WrestleMania 40 main event
Rhodes and Reigns met in the Night 2 main event under Bloodline Rules, a stipulation that allowed interference. The match followed Night 1’s main event, in which Rhodes and Rollins lost to The Rock and Reigns; that result set the stipulation for the title match. Wrestling Inc.’s event coverage describes the decisive sequence this way:
- Rollins appeared wearing Shield gear.
- Reigns was distracted by his former Shield teammate.
- Rhodes capitalized with three consecutive Cross Rhodes and pinned Reigns to win the championship.
This is the reported account of the finish, not proof that Rollins’s appearance was the sole reason Reigns lost. The reviewed coverage does not establish WWE’s intent behind the moment.
Why Rollins and Reigns already had WrestleMania history
The Shield reference carried added significance because Rollins had previously cost Reigns a WrestleMania championship opportunity. At WrestleMania 31, Brock Lesnar and Reigns were in a title match when Rollins cashed in his Money in the Bank contract. WWE’s official report, published January 25, 2015, says the match became a Triple Threat and Rollins pinned Reigns to become WWE World Heavyweight Champion.

At WrestleMania 40, Rollins did not win Reigns’s title himself: Rhodes scored the pin. The earlier episode makes Rollins’s reported role in the later finish a pointed callback, while the result belongs to Rhodes.
Keep the WrestleMania 40 finish separate from WrestleMania 41
WrestleMania 41 had a different main event and a different Rollins–Reigns story. WWE’s Saturday recap identifies that event’s main event as a Triple Threat between CM Punk, Reigns, and Rollins, and recounts Rollins winning after Paul Heyman betrayed both Punk and Reigns. That later match is not the WrestleMania 40 title loss covered here.
