The eight-episode Netflix anime, created by Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski, takes the story in a more adventurous direction, with Ramona Flowers’ investigation and the League of Evil Exes shaping what follows.
What is Scott Pilgrim Takes Off about?
Scott Pilgrim meets Ramona Flowers in Toronto and learns that, if he wants to date her, he must defeat her seven evil exes. That familiar romantic-comedy-and-video-game premise is the starting point, not a promise that the series will replay the movie’s plot. Netflix describes the story as becoming more complicated after Scott takes on the challenge. Netflix’s series announcement introduces that setup.
The first episode shares its title with the opening graphic novel, Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life. Later episode descriptions turn attention toward the League of Evil Exes and Ramona’s investigation. That shift helps explain the title’s promise of a different look: the anime establishes recognizable characters and conflict, then moves beyond a straightforward adaptation.
Does the anime follow Edgar Wright’s movie?
Not beat for beat. The 2010 live-action film and the anime draw on the same characters and underlying premise, but Scott Pilgrim Takes Off takes its own narrative direction rather than remaking the film in animated form. In Netflix’s 2023 announcement, Wright said he had suggested anime as an interesting possibility because a live-action sequel seemed unlikely. He also praised O’Malley’s idea as “way more adventurous than just a straight adaptation of the original books.” Netflix Tudum’s explainer gives Wright’s comments on the project.

The distinction is useful for viewers deciding where to start. The film supplies a quick introduction to the characters and the seven-exes premise, but it is not a required recap of the anime’s story. Likewise, watching the anime does not amount to seeing Wright’s film with a different visual treatment.
How the comics, film and anime compare
There are three versions to keep in view: O’Malley’s graphic novels, Wright’s live-action adaptation and Netflix’s animated series. The comics came first; Scott Pilgrim debuted in Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life in 2004, and the graphic-novel series comprises six volumes, according to Netflix Tudum.

The graphic novels are an optional companion for readers curious about how the characters and premise began; they are not a prerequisite for following the anime. Why is Scott Pilgrim Takes Off anime?
The animated format gives the series room to push its action and character designs beyond the limits of live action. Netflix reports that director Abel Góngora and Science SARU looked to O’Malley’s original graphic novels and later character drawings, as well as Toronto streets and homes, when developing the show’s look. Netflix also identifies Gorillaz illustrations, older anime such as Dragon Ball, and 2D games such as Street Fighter as influences, particularly for the fights. Those are reported touchstones, not claims that the series imitates any one source.

Góngora described fights as key moments when “Scott Pilgrim becoming an anime makes sense,” because the action lets the character design be pushed to its limits. The visual approach is therefore part of the adaptation’s identity, rather than a simple change of medium. Netflix Tudum’s production feature discusses these influences and Góngora’s comments.
Who voices the characters?
The English-language cast from Wright’s film returned for the anime. Netflix’s official announcement lists Michael Cera as Scott and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Ramona, alongside the following performers:

Ramona’s background includes moving from New York to Toronto after a bad breakup, according to Netflix’s cast guide. The series also includes a cameo with a connection to Wright’s filmography: Nick Frost and Simon Pegg appear as security guards on the set of the story’s fictional Scott Pilgrim film, in the roles Netflix identifies with their Hot Fuzz security guards.
