NAZA, an 80-minute documentary by Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, examines how Israeli military targeting and strike-approval systems in Gaza are described by soldiers who say they worked with them. Its “death machine” framing is the film’s metaphor, not the official name of a military system. The allegations in the film are contested: the Israeli military says human officers select targets and commanders decide whether to strike, with orders intended to distinguish militants from civilians and limit civilian harm.
What is NAZA about?
NAZA is an 80-minute documentary directed by Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor. The Venice Biennale lists it in the Venezia 83 Competition and describes it as filmed at night on Tel Aviv rooftops. ARA reports that 24 soldiers appear in the film; their faces and voices are distorted to protect their identities. The film uses nighttime interviews rather than airstrike footage or conventional, on-camera talking heads.
The title has a specific explanation from the film’s producer. The Guardian’s production note says “NAZA” is a military acronym used by Israeli intelligence to indicate the number of civilians expected to be killed in an airstrike. That definition is the producer’s account of the term, not an independently verified technical finding.
What do the soldiers say about targeting?
In accounts summarized by the Associated Press, anonymous interviewees describe systems that process surveillance information and assist in identifying people believed to have connections to Hamas. They also describe a separate tool that recommends buildings or structures as potential targets. The interviewees say the systems can make mistakes.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
These are claims presented by the documentary and reported by AP, not independently established facts. The film’s testimony raises questions about how much automated systems shape target identification and how human review operates, but the available accounts do not resolve those questions or establish how a particular strike was approved.
How does the Israeli military respond?
The Israeli military disputes the filmmakers’ findings. As reported by AP, it says orders distinguish militants from civilians and aim to minimize civilian harm. It acknowledges that AI may be used, but says intelligence officers select targets and operational commanders decide whether to strike. The military also said some interviewees did not appear to know the full targeting process.

AP further reports that the military denied a claim about an operation anticipating 500 civilian deaths. That figure is a disputed claim described in coverage of the film, not a verified count of deaths.
| Question | What the film’s interviewees describe | What the military says |
|---|---|---|
| Who identifies potential targets? | Interviewees describe AI-assisted processing of surveillance information and tools that recommend people or structures as targets. | The military says intelligence officers select targets. |
| Who decides whether to strike? | The testimony questions how automated recommendations feed into operational decisions; the accounts summarized here do not establish the approval chain for a specific strike. | The military says operational commanders make strike decisions. |
| How are civilian risks handled? | Interviewees say the systems can make mistakes; the film examines the consequences of targeting practices. | The military says its orders distinguish militants from civilians and seek to limit civilian harm. |
The two accounts differ on how the process works and what safeguards mean in practice. The film offers anonymous testimony; the military offers its description of policy and decision-making. The sources summarized here do not independently adjudicate battlefield conduct or determine whether a specific strike complied with international law.

What reporting does the documentary build on?
The Guardian says the film builds on reporting published by +972 Magazine, the Hebrew-language outlet Local Call, and The Guardian between 2023 and 2025. AP reports that the broader reporting involved more than 100 confidential sources. That count refers to the reporting behind the film, not the documentary’s 24 soldier interviewees.
AP also describes accusations of genocide made by experts and major human-rights groups, alongside Israel’s denial. NAZA is a documentary about targeting practices, not a legal ruling; the reporting summarized here does not establish an adjudicated finding on genocide or other legal claims.
