Derek vs Derek is a 2026 documentary about neighbouring Devon farmers Derek Banbury and Derek Gow, whose different approaches to land use put food production and nature recovery in sharp focus. Directed by James Dawson, the 88-minute film follows a dispute that raises a wider question: can farms produce food and support wildlife at the same time?
What is Derek vs Derek about?
The film follows two neighbours named Derek as their ideas about the countryside collide. Sheffield DocFest describes the dispute as one that intensifies as tempers fray, animals escape and the land changes. The conflict is personal, but it opens onto questions about farm livelihoods, food production, habitat restoration and what happens when neighbouring properties are managed for different purposes.
Sheffield DocFest lists the film as 88 minutes, in English, with English subtitles throughout, and identifies it as a UK premiere at the festival. The festival describes it as “a funny and timely documentary”; that is the festival’s promotional characterization.

Derek Banbury: farming for food production
Farmers Weekly reported in 2026 that Derek Banbury runs Lower Frankaborough Farm, a 375-acre dairy, beef and arable enterprise farmed by his family for three generations. His approach emphasizes productive agriculture and the role of farms in producing food.

Derek Gow: restoring habitats
Derek Gow is a former sheep farmer who became a conservationist and rewilding advocate. Farmers Weekly reported in 2026 that productive farming has ceased across 400 acres at his Rewilding Coombeshead project, where habitat restoration and species reintroduction are central. The reported work includes ponds and the use of Exmoor ponies, shorthorn cattle, buffalo and Iron Age pigs to help restore habitats; beavers, water voles and barn owls are among the wildlife reported there.
These acreages describe the two projects in the reporting; they are not national statistics or a complete assessment of either farming system.

How can farmers produce food and restore nature?
The film frames this as a question of balance rather than a simple contest with one winner. Banbury’s farm foregrounds food production and farm-business viability. Gow’s project foregrounds habitat restoration and wildlife. The film’s subject matter also brings practical points into view: how land with lower productivity might be used, how public support could affect land-management choices, and how wildlife or different management decisions can affect neighbouring farms.
Farmers Weekly reported Gow’s proposal that public funding could enable farmers to devote 10% of their least productive land to nature without giving up food production. That figure is Gow’s suggested approach, not an established rule for farms generally. The film raises the issue; its account of these two neighbours should not be treated as a comprehensive evaluation of the costs or outcomes of either model.
