Lions, cheetahs and chimpanzees share a continent, but not a way of life. Lions are social predators of open habitats, cheetahs need vast connected landscapes to roam and hunt, and chimpanzees depend on forests. Their conservation needs differ just as sharply: reducing conflict with people is central for big cats, while protecting forest habitat and addressing poaching are key for chimpanzees.
Three animals, three kinds of habitat
Lions: predators of open country
Lions are associated with savannas and other open habitats, where they live and hunt in social groups called prides. Their survival depends on more than space alone: suitable habitat and enough prey must remain available, and conflict can arise where lions encounter people or livestock. African Parks reports that lions have lost more than 80 percent of their historical range. African Parks’ lion overview presents this as part of the species’ conservation context.
Cheetahs: wide-ranging hunters
Cheetahs are generally solitary and need extensive, connected ranges. Their movements may take them beyond protected areas and across human-used land, making corridors between habitats important. WWF highlights the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA) as an important landscape for cheetahs and describes conservation work in the Southern Kenya–Northern Tanzania landscape. WWF’s cheetah overview explains the importance of keeping habitat connected.
Chimpanzees: forest-dwelling great apes
Chimpanzees are not savanna big cats; they are forest-dwelling great apes that spend much of their time in trees. Forest loss and fragmentation threaten the habitat they depend on, while poaching is another pressure identified by conservation sources. The sources cited here do not establish a current population estimate for the chimpanzees discussed, so a number should not be inferred from lion or cheetah estimates.

How their conservation challenges differ
| Species | Habitat and spatial needs | Pressures emphasized by conservation sources | Responses suited to the challenge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lions | Savannas and other open habitats; suitable habitat and prey are essential. | Habitat contraction, prey decline and conflict with people, including killing in retaliation or pre-emptively. | Protect habitat and prey, monitor populations, and reduce risks to people and livestock through community-aware coexistence measures. |
| Cheetahs | Large, connected landscapes and corridors; individuals range widely. | Habitat loss and fragmentation, prey decline, conflict and impediments to movement through human-dominated areas. | Maintain connected habitat, protect corridors, monitor movement and engage communities across the landscape. |
| Chimpanzees | Forest habitat, including tree-rich environments. | Forest pressures and poaching. | Protect and manage forest habitat and address poaching; the sources cited here do not specify a comparable population estimate. |
Habitat loss and fragmentation affect all three, but the pressures are not interchangeable. A corridor that helps a cheetah cross a broad landscape does not replace forest protection for chimpanzees. For lions, coexistence measures matter because conflict with livestock owners or other people can lead to retaliatory or preventive killing. WWF identifies such killing as a key conflict-related threat in its lion overview.
What the population estimates do—and do not—say
Conservation organizations publish different estimates, so the figures below should be read with their attribution rather than combined into a single definitive count. African Parks reports fewer than 20,000 lions across Africa, while WWF gives a range of about 23,000 to 39,000 wild lions. For cheetahs, African Parks reports fewer than 6,700 in the wild; WWF reports around 6,500, attributing its figure to the IUCN Red List and experts. These are organization-reported estimates on undated species pages accessed in 2026, not a harmonized census produced by one source. African Parks also says cheetahs have been eradicated from 90 percent of their historical African range. This is the organization’s description of range loss, not a claim that 90 percent of today’s cheetahs have disappeared. No comparable current chimpanzee population figure is established by these sources.

Keep landscapes connected for cheetahs
Because cheetahs range widely, protecting isolated patches alone may leave them unable to move between suitable areas. Connected habitats and corridors help maintain movement across large landscapes, including places where wildlife and human activity overlap. That makes cross-boundary coordination and community engagement practical parts of cheetah conservation, not optional extras.

Reduce the costs of living alongside lions
Protecting lions requires addressing the conditions that lead people to kill them. When livestock or human safety is at risk, enforcement alone cannot resolve the conflict. Coexistence efforts need to account for local livelihoods as well as protecting predators, while habitat and prey management help address other pressures identified for lions.
Protect forests and address poaching for chimpanzees
Chimpanzee conservation depends on maintaining forest habitat and confronting poaching. Measures designed for wide-ranging predators in open landscapes cannot simply be transferred to forest-dwelling apes; habitat management must fit the ecosystems chimpanzees use.

Use monitoring and reintroductions carefully
Protection, research and monitoring, habitat management and community engagement can complement one another. Reintroductions and translocations may also contribute where threats have been addressed. African Parks says it undertakes reintroductions after key threats are resolved and communities are engaged. It reports cheetah reintroductions to Liwonde in 2017, Majete in 2019 and Bangweulu in 2020, and describes lion reintroductions in Akagera, Majete and Liwonde. These are organization-reported examples, not proof that reintroduction by itself guarantees recovery. African Parks on cheetah conservation; African Parks on lion conservation; African Parks on its conservation work.
The broader lesson is that “African wildlife” is not one habitat or one conservation problem. Protecting open-country predators, keeping vast landscapes connected and safeguarding forests require different tools, even when they share challenges such as habitat loss.
