1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor PRISM Desktop streaming at 1080p30 with H.264, plan for about 17 Mbps of sustained available upload capacity. For 1080p60 H.264, plan for about 21 Mbps. These targets apply YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom to its recommended video bitrates; the right figure changes with codec, resolution, and frame rate.
Upload speed targets by stream profile
YouTube’s recommended ingestion bitrate is the starting point—not a universal PRISM requirement. The upload targets below multiply that bitrate by 1.2 to leave the 20% headroom YouTube recommends. They are calculated planning figures, rounded up where useful; measure sustained upload capacity under the conditions in which you will stream.
| Resolution and frame rate | Codec | YouTube recommended video bitrate | Upload capacity target with 20% headroom |
|---|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | AV1 or H.265 | 6 Mbps | 7.2 Mbps |
| 720p30 | H.264 | 8 Mbps | 9.6 Mbps |
| 720p60 | AV1 or H.265 | 6 Mbps | 7.2 Mbps |
| 720p60 | H.264 | 8 Mbps | 9.6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | AV1 or H.265 | 10 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | H.264 | 14 Mbps | 16.8 Mbps (about 17 Mbps) |
| 1080p60 | AV1 or H.265 | 12 Mbps | 14.4 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | H.264 | 17 Mbps | 20.4 Mbps (about 21 Mbps) |
These are YouTube’s published recommendations for live ingestion; the help pages do not state a publication year. The 20% margin is not spare bandwidth to spend elsewhere: other devices and users can consume it, and real upload performance can fluctuate. If you send parallel primary and backup streams, add their bitrates together before applying the headroom. YouTube says the total stream bitrate must fit within upload bandwidth and its recommendation accounts for primary and backup streams. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance and its streaming tips.
How to choose a reliable target for your connection
Measure available upload capacity, not just the plan label
An internet plan’s advertised upload speed does not guarantee that much capacity will be consistently available to PRISM. YouTube recommends running a speed test to test your upload bitrate. Test at the location and during the times you expect to stream, ideally with your usual home or workplace network activity present. Compare the sustained result with the target for your actual output profile, and leave room for fluctuations and other devices.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Account for what else uses the connection
Video calls, cloud backups, file uploads, and other streams all compete for upstream capacity. If the connection has less available upload than the profile needs, reduce the stream’s demands—usually by lowering resolution, frame rate, or bitrate—rather than relying on a brief high speed-test result. For multiple concurrent streams, total their bitrates first, then add the 20% margin.
Prefer Ethernet when Wi-Fi is unstable
PRISM lists insufficient upload speed, an unstable local network, and weak Wi-Fi among possible causes of disconnections. A wired LAN connection can make delivery more consistent when wireless is unreliable, but it cannot increase the upload capacity supplied by your internet service. You can connect the streaming computer over Ethernet if Wi-Fi is the problem.

Set PRISM Desktop’s output to match the target
- Choose the profile. Decide the resolution, frame rate, and codec you intend to send, then use the corresponding YouTube bitrate recommendation in the table. There is no separate bitrate premium simply because a stream runs continuously; bandwidth demand follows the stream profile.
- Set resolution and frame rate. In PRISM Desktop, open Settings > Video and select the output resolution and FPS. If your available upload capacity or computer performance is constrained, PRISM advises reducing resolution, bitrate, and FPS.
- Set the bitrate. Open Settings > Output and choose Output Mode: Advanced to access the bitrate control. Use the recommended bitrate for the chosen profile and codec, and keep the 20% connection margin outside the stream bitrate.
- Use stable encoder settings. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1. YouTube recommends CBR bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, with keyframes no more than four seconds apart. PRISM’s guide says to consider a hardware NVIDIA or AMD encoder when your computer has a dedicated graphics card.
- Check the stream after it starts. Watch YouTube’s stream health and the connection for bitrate drops or disconnections. If performance is poor, first check competing uploads and local network stability; then lower the output demands if the available capacity remains insufficient.
PRISM’s mobile guidance gives different figures—4 Mbps as a general 720p recommendation and 6 Mbps for 1080p—and describes adaptive bitrate. Those are mobile-specific figures, not substitutes for YouTube’s desktop encoder recommendations above. PRISM also has separate mobile stability guidance; it should not be treated as a universal PRISM Desktop threshold.
Plan separately for keeping the broadcast live and keeping an archive
Upload speed determines whether the live feed can be delivered; it does not ensure that YouTube preserves a complete replay. YouTube warns that a live stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all and recommends recording a local archive as a backup. If retaining a full day’s recording matters, plan and verify local recording separately from the live connection. See YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.

Troubleshoot disconnects and poor stream health
- Available upload falls below the target: Pause other uploads or streams, then retest. Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate in PRISM if capacity is still short.
- Speed tests look adequate, but the stream still drops: Check for competing devices and unstable Wi-Fi. Try wired LAN; it can improve local consistency but will not solve inadequate ISP upload capacity.
- The computer struggles at high settings: Lower output resolution, bitrate, or FPS. If a dedicated graphics card is available, PRISM recommends using its NVIDIA or AMD hardware encoder.
- YouTube reports unstable ingestion: Confirm that the combined bitrate of any primary and backup streams fits within available upload capacity, including the headroom margin. Check YouTube stream health while the broadcast is running.
- The live feed worked, but the full-day replay is missing: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. Use a local recording plan if a complete archive is required.
Or let it run in the cloud
