Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11For one FFmpeg process looping a local video file to YouTube Live, start with a 2 GB RAM VPS as a cautious practical rule of thumb. A lean Linux VPS with 1 GB may work if FFmpeg stream-copies compatible audio and video without filters, but it leaves less headroom for the operating system and support processes. These are workload-based estimates, not official FFmpeg or YouTube minimums or tested benchmarks.
Choose RAM according to what FFmpeg does
The key distinction is whether FFmpeg copies already-encoded streams or decodes and re-encodes them. Looping a file does not mean FFmpeg must load the whole file into RAM; the file’s size alone is not a reliable way to estimate memory use. The FFmpeg manual describes input handling and pacing, but does not publish a VPS RAM minimum for this workload: FFmpeg documentation.
| Workload | Practical starting point | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
One stream, lean Linux host, compatible audio/video copied with -c copy, no filters |
1 GB may work; 2 GB is the more cautious starting point | At 1 GB, there is less room for the operating system, monitoring, reconnect handling, or other services. Measure the actual workload. |
| One stream that re-encodes, applies filters, uses a demanding source, or shares the VPS with other services | No fixed RAM amount is established | Start with headroom and test the exact command. CPU capacity may be the limiting factor, especially for real-time encoding. |
The figures in the table are editorial rules of thumb, not published requirements. The cited FFmpeg and YouTube documentation does not set a universal RAM figure for a VPS running one loop stream.
Why re-encoding changes the sizing question
Stream copy
When the source’s encoded audio and video are suitable for the YouTube ingest path, -c copy passes those streams through instead of encoding them again. This avoids the video encoding workload, though FFmpeg, the operating system, and any other running services still need memory.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Re-encoding and filters
An encoder such as libx264 means FFmpeg is decoding and encoding video; filters also add processing work. Higher resolution or frame rate can increase the workload. There is no single RAM estimate that covers every codec, frame rate, filter chain, FFmpeg build, and host. CPU must also sustain the work in real time. Google’s guidance for live encoding with FFmpeg warns that encoding below 1x speed will not keep up with live input: Live encoding with VP9 using FFmpeg. That is an encoding-speed warning, not a VPS memory recommendation.
How to check whether your VPS has enough memory
- Inspect the command. Determine whether it uses
-c copyor an encoder such aslibx264, and note any filters, audio conversion, and simultaneous streams. - Check input pacing and option placement. For a file-based live stream, pace input in real time as appropriate; FFmpeg documents
-reas equivalent to-readrate 1. Put input options before the corresponding-i, following FFmpeg’s option scoping rules. See the FFmpeg manual. - Run the actual loop on the candidate VPS. Observe FFmpeg’s resident memory and the operating system’s available memory over a representative period, including after the loop wraps and after the stream has been running for a while.
- Look for pressure, not just a single reading. If available memory gets close to the host’s limit or the process is terminated under memory pressure, move to a larger allocation or reduce competing workloads, then test again.
- Check stream health separately. Review YouTube’s feedback for codec, audio/video presence, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe/GOP frequency, and other delivery issues. A memory reading does not establish that the stream settings are correct, and a stream warning does not by itself prove RAM is low. See the YouTube Live API stream health documentation.
FFmpeg’s -benchmark option can report maximum memory use on supported systems, but its manual cautions that reporting is unsupported on some systems and may show zero where unavailable. Treat it as a measurement aid, not a guaranteed RAM figure. Compare it with system-level available memory during the actual stream.

Do not mistake YouTube stream settings for RAM requirements
YouTube’s health checks cover delivery and encoding configuration, not how much memory a VPS must have. For example, the Live API documents a target keyframe frequency of four seconds or less in relevant GOP warnings; that is a stream setting, not a memory estimate. If you use YouTube’s HLS ingest path, its guide specifies format and segment constraints, including closed GOP and recommended segment lengths of one to four seconds, no longer than five seconds. Those requirements apply to HLS delivery, not ordinary VPS RAM sizing: Delivering Live YouTube Content via HLS.
What else to compare when choosing a VPS
- CPU: Check the CPU allocation and whether it can keep up with your actual encoder and settings. More RAM will not fix encoding that cannot sustain real-time speed.
- Network: Consider sustained upload capacity and transfer limits against the stream’s outgoing bitrate.
- Concurrent work: Account for other streams, services, monitoring, and restart supervision running on the same VM.
- Location and price: Compare VM region, current specifications, and cost. Provider plan details change, so verify them directly; a RAM label alone does not establish that a plan suits your workload.
Common problems and what to check
The FFmpeg process is stopped or the VPS runs out of memory
Check process and system memory during the run, and look for other workloads competing for RAM. If memory pressure is confirmed, add headroom or reduce competing services. Do not infer the cause from the YouTube warning alone.

The stream buffers or falls behind
For an encoding workload, check whether the CPU can sustain real-time speed. Also inspect upload reliability and bitrate. Increasing RAM alone does not make an overloaded encoder or inadequate network connection keep pace.
YouTube reports a stream configuration warning
Check the specific health diagnostic—such as codec, missing audio or video, bitrate, frame rate, or GOP/keyframe frequency—and correct that setting. A configuration warning is not a RAM diagnosis.

The stream is unstable when the file repeats
Observe memory and stream health through the loop boundary rather than relying on a brief startup check. If the process is terminated under memory pressure, increase headroom; if YouTube reports an ingest or configuration issue, address that separately.
