A nonstop church stream can use several terabytes of upload data in a month. Using YouTube’s recommended H.264 settings as a planning baseline, 720p30 with 128 kbps stereo audio works out to about 2.63 TB per 30 days; 1080p30 works out to about 4.58 TB. These are decimal-terabyte estimates for the church’s outgoing stream, before network overhead—not data used by viewers watching it.
Monthly data use at common YouTube settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends 8 Mbps video for H.264 at 720p30 and 14 Mbps at 1080p30, with 128 kbps stereo audio. Adding the audio gives total bitrates of 8.128 Mbps and 14.128 Mbps. At a steady bitrate, each 1 Mbps sustained for 30 days transfers 324 decimal GB.
| Outgoing stream setting | Total bitrate used in calculation | Estimated upload data per 30 days |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 H.264 video plus 128 kbps stereo audio | 8.128 Mbps | About 2,633 GB (2.63 TB) |
| 1080p30 H.264 video plus 128 kbps stereo audio | 14.128 Mbps | About 4,577 GB (4.58 TB) |
These estimates use 30 uninterrupted days (2,592,000 seconds) and decimal units: 1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes. The calculation is bitrate in Mbps × 324 = decimal GB per 30 days. Actual network-accounted use may be higher because of transport overhead, retransmissions, bitrate variation, and the ISP’s measurement method. YouTube’s recommended values are guidance, not an India-specific upload-speed recommendation. YouTube’s live encoder settings
Whose data is counted?
The figures above are for the church’s outgoing feed from the venue to YouTube. They do not include the separate data each viewer uses to watch. YouTube transcodes a live stream into output formats for viewers, so viewer traffic is not simply added to the church’s upload total. YouTube’s encoder guidance

How to estimate a different bitrate or streaming schedule
Continuous stream
Use the encoder’s actual configured total bitrate, including audio, rather than relying only on a resolution label such as “HD.” Multiply the bitrate in Mbps by 324 for an uninterrupted 30-day estimate in decimal GB. For a different number of days, multiply bitrate by 10.8 GB per day, then by the number of days.
Shorter daily schedule
If the church streams fewer than 24 hours a day, scale the monthly estimate by the fraction of time it is actually streaming. For example, a 12-hour daily schedule is half the continuous-stream estimate, assuming the same bitrate whenever it is live. This is a calculation, not a promise about an ISP’s accounting.

Will Indian broadband handle a nonstop sermon stream?
There is no single Indian broadband plan or speed that can be recommended without the church’s location, ISP, plan terms, local network conditions, and encoder bitrate. Compare the monthly estimate against the exact plan’s data or fair-use allowance, and check what happens after that allowance: throttling, extra charges, or another policy. TRAI material discusses usage-limited plans and notes that required speed varies with the application, location, and concurrent users; it does not establish the allowance or post-limit speed for a particular church’s plan. Check sustained upload at the venue
Advertised download speed does not tell you whether the encoder can continuously upload its feed. Test the connection where the stream will run, at a normally busy time, with other church traffic present. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and monitoring stream health. A short speed test alone may not reveal whether a connection will remain stable for a continuous broadcast. YouTube encoder guidance

Live camera feed or prerecorded loop?
A live sermon from a camera is encoded at the church and sent continuously to YouTube, so its outgoing data use depends on its configured bitrate and duration. A prerecorded loop can instead be hosted and streamed from a cloud service. That changes where the stream is sent from and what equipment must remain running; it is not the same workflow as a live camera feed. For Indian churches choosing a prerecorded YouTube loop, StreamNeo keeps uploaded videos looping from the cloud, so a church computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It handles uploaded video, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. See StreamNeo.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded YouTube loop, the steps are: upload the recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at the church; uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are accepted in India. Start the free day on StreamNeo.

Why older viewing-data figures are not a good encoder budget
A Reliance Jio submission hosted by TRAI quotes historical examples of 38 MB per five-minute 720p video and 62 MB per five-minute 1080p video. Those are examples of video viewing, not current official YouTube guarantees or a reliable basis for sizing the continuous outgoing bitrate of a live encoder. TRAI-hosted Jio submission
