Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara have two children together. Their older child is their son, River; reliable public reports have not established the name or exact birth date of their younger child.
What is publicly known about their children?
Their older child is River
Filmmaker Victor Kossakovsky announced in September 2020 that Phoenix and Mara had welcomed a son named River. The Guardian reported Kossakovsky’s remarks at the Zurich Film Festival, where he said: “He just had a baby, by the way, his name was… a beautiful son called River, so he can’t promote him now.” The Guardian and the Los Angeles Times reported the announcement.
The name honors Phoenix’s late brother, actor River Phoenix, according to those reports.
They welcomed a second child
In February 2024, coverage reported that Mara was expecting a second child. Later reports said the couple had welcomed their second child, bringing their total to two. Those reports did not establish the younger child’s name or exact birth date. People covered the pregnancy, and People later reported the arrival.

Why are details about the younger child limited?
Phoenix and Mara keep their family life private. Their first child’s birth became public through Kossakovsky’s festival remarks rather than a birth announcement from the couple. In November 2020, they did refer to River in an op-ed about migrant families, writing: “As new parents, it’s unbearable to imagine what it would feel like to have our child taken away from us for a day, let alone years.” People reported the op-ed.
Because reliable coverage has not identified the second child, online claims about the child’s name or birth date should not be treated as confirmed.
