A manually changed YouTube thumbnail often appears within seconds or a few minutes, but YouTube does not promise a fixed update time. Check the video’s watch page first; Search, Home, apps and embedded players can continue showing an older image while they refresh or use cached copies.
How long should you wait?
YouTube’s official guidance says thumbnail changes “may take time” to appear; it does not give a guaranteed timeframe. In ordinary use, a saved replacement commonly shows up within seconds or a few minutes, but that is a practical expectation, not a YouTube service guarantee. YouTube’s thumbnail instructions describe the update process and its caveat.
- After a few minutes: Check the public watch page and YouTube Studio before trying the upload again.
- After several hours: If the image remains old on multiple devices and on the watch page, investigate whether the change saved, the file meets requirements, or the account can use custom thumbnails.
- After 24 hours: If the old image persists everywhere, treat it as a likely saving, eligibility, policy, surface-specific or unusual caching issue—not as a normal guaranteed processing period. YouTube does not publish 24 hours as a universal deadline.
These are troubleshooting thresholds, not official deadlines. A manual replacement is also different from YouTube Studio’s Test & compare feature, which evaluates variants over a much longer period.
Why the old thumbnail may remain visible
Different YouTube surfaces refresh at different times
A thumbnail selected in Studio, the image on the public watch page, and images in Search, Home, Subscriptions, channel pages, playlists, watch history, recommendations or embedded players are not the same confirmation. A surface can show an older fetched image even after the replacement has been saved. Use the watch page as your main public check rather than relying only on Search or an embed.

Your browser, app or another site may have cached the image
A browser can keep a local copy; the YouTube app may not have refreshed its data; and an external website or embedded player may cache an image independently. Refreshing or clearing a local cache can help determine whether your device is showing an old copy, but it cannot force YouTube’s other surfaces or third-party sites to update.
Vertical videos can use a different thumbnail presentation
For vertical videos, YouTube may replace a creator’s 16:9 custom thumbnail with an automatically generated 4:5 image on Home, Explore and Subscriptions. The custom image may still appear in the watch feed, watch history and non-mobile platforms. Compare like with like before concluding that the upload failed; this behavior is described in YouTube’s thumbnail guidance.
Change the thumbnail and verify that it saved
On a computer
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Select Content, then click the video.
- In the thumbnail controls, choose an auto-generated image or select Upload thumbnail.
- Wait for the upload and save operation to complete, then click Save.
- Reopen the video details and confirm the selected thumbnail is still attached.
See the desktop instructions from YouTube if the controls differ from what you see.

In the YouTube Studio app on Android
- Open YouTube Studio and tap Content.
- Select the video, then tap Edit and Edit thumbnail.
- Choose an auto-generated or custom image and confirm the selection.
- Tap Save, then reopen the video to check that the image remains selected.
YouTube also describes an option in the consumer Android app: go to Your videos, open the video’s More menu, choose Edit, then Edit thumbnail. App versions and account types can place or label controls differently. The Android instructions provide the current official steps.
On iPhone or iPad
YouTube’s mobile instructions allow thumbnail changes in the YouTube or YouTube Studio app: choose the video, edit its thumbnail, confirm the selection and tap Save. Because mobile menus vary by app version, follow the labels currently shown in your app rather than relying on one fixed path. See YouTube’s iOS guidance.
Check where the update is visible
- In Studio, reopen the video and see whether the new image remains selected.
- Open the public watch page and refresh it. If necessary, use a hard refresh.
- Open the same page in a private or incognito window to reduce the chance that your browser’s local copy is misleading you.
- Check from another browser, device or network.
- Only then compare Search, the channel page, the app or an embed. If those surfaces alone show the old image, the replacement may already be live on the watch page.
The pattern helps narrow down the cause: a new image in Studio but an old one publicly points to propagation or caching; an old image in Studio as well suggests the change may not have saved; a new watch-page image but an old Search result suggests a surface-specific delay; and a difference between devices points toward local app or browser data.

If the thumbnail still has not changed
Studio still shows the old image
Repeat the change once, wait for the save to complete and reopen the details page. If the replacement will not stay selected, check the file limits and account eligibility below. Look for an explicit error or policy notice; an old image by itself does not prove YouTube rejected the replacement.
Studio shows the new image, but the watch page does not
Wait several minutes, then check the watch page in a private window and on another device. Avoid repeatedly uploading the same file while the first update may still be propagating; repeated attempts make it harder to tell whether the save or the display is the problem.
Only Search, a channel page or an embed is old
If Studio and the watch page show the replacement, do not re-upload solely because one other surface has not caught up. Check again later; a third-party page can also retain its own cached image outside YouTube’s control.

The video is a Short
Shorts do not use the ordinary long-form custom-thumbnail workflow. You can select a frame for certain placements, but YouTube says that selection cannot be changed after the Short is uploaded. If the Short is already published, do not assume a standard thumbnail replacement is available. See YouTube’s thumbnail guidance.
You are using Test & compare
That feature is an experiment, not a manual replacement that should appear everywhere within minutes. YouTube allows up to three thumbnail variants to be tested through Studio on desktop; results may take a few days or up to two weeks, depending on impressions and other conditions. Details are in YouTube’s Test & compare instructions.

Image file
YouTube recommends JPG, GIF or PNG and a 16:9 aspect ratio for standard video thumbnails; the minimum width is 640 pixels. Its current desktop guidance recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels, but that resolution is not stated as mandatory, and mobile guidance may show different resolution details. Prefer a clear 16:9 JPG or PNG that fits the upload limit shown for the device you are using:

See YouTube’s current thumbnail specifications and follow any more specific limit displayed in your creator interface.
Account access and daily limits
Uploading a custom thumbnail requires an eligible, verified account. Daily custom-thumbnail limits can vary by country, channel history and other eligibility factors. If Studio displays “Daily custom thumbnail limit reached,” YouTube’s guidance says to wait 24 hours before trying again; that limit message is different from ordinary thumbnail propagation.
Policy notices
YouTube can remove a thumbnail, restrict thumbnail privileges or take other enforcement action when content violates its thumbnail or Community Guidelines policies. The outcome is not always a strike: in some cases, YouTube may age-restrict the video or remove the thumbnail without issuing one. Check for a notice in Studio and consult YouTube’s thumbnail policy rather than inferring enforcement from a delay alone.
Quick Recap
Quick troubleshooting checklist
- Confirm the replacement remains selected in Studio and the save completed.
- Check the public watch page first; refresh it and try a private window.
- Test another browser or device before clearing caches.
- If the watch page is current but Search or an embed is not, allow for a surface-specific or external cache.
- Check whether the video is vertical or a Short, or whether you are waiting for Test & compare results.
- If the image never stays selected, check the file-size limit, account eligibility, daily-limit message and any policy notice.
- If the old image remains everywhere after several hours, investigate the save and eligibility issues; if it is still unchanged after 24 hours, do not assume that delay is an official YouTube processing window.
