Sometimes—but not directly from Netflix as a general retail service. Netflix ended its DVD-by-mail operation on September 29, 2023. Some programs associated with Netflix nevertheless have authorized DVD or Blu-ray editions released by studios and home-entertainment distributors. Availability is decided title by title, and can differ by season, format, country and date.
Does Netflix sell its streaming shows on DVD?
No. Netflix’s former DVD.com business was a rental-by-mail service, not a permanent shop for buying discs, and the company shipped its final DVD on September 29, 2023. See Netflix’s announcement of the DVD service’s final season and its farewell confirmation.
The Netflix streaming app does not offer a universal “buy this show on DVD” checkout. A physical copy normally comes from the studio or distributor that controls home-entertainment rights, a retailer supplied by that company, or a legitimate second-hand seller.
What “Netflix show” means for physical-media rights
Licensed programs
Netflix may stream a program under a licensing agreement while another studio retains DVD and Blu-ray rights. The show’s presence in Netflix’s catalog proves streaming rights in a particular market and period; it does not prove that Netflix owns the title or controls its physical distribution.
#1 Best Overall
Netflix-produced or commissioned programs
Netflix may have financed, commissioned or distributed a series without controlling every physical-media right in every territory. Contracts can divide production, streaming, broadcast and home-video rights among different companies.
Netflix-branded “Originals” and acquisitions
“Netflix Original” describes Netflix’s distribution or rights relationship, not a promise of ownership or a future disc release. A series acquired after starting on television or another service may retain an established studio’s physical-distribution arrangement.

The practical rule is simple: identify the rights holder and an authorized edition, rather than relying on the Netflix label.
Why some Netflix-associated shows get discs
- A studio already controls home-entertainment rights.
- The title has a collector or fan audience likely to support sales.
- A distributor expects enough demand for a season or limited edition.
- International reach, awards attention or long-term library value makes preservation and sales worthwhile.
- Physical distribution was included in the original deal.
- A rights holder wants revenue outside streaming, even if only for selected seasons.
Physical media is a smaller business than it was: the FCC reported U.S. spending on purchased and rented DVD/Blu-ray media falling from $11.8 billion in 2012 to $1.5 billion in 2023, while noting Netflix’s DVD-subscription shutdown. The decline does not mean releases have stopped; it means releases are more selective.

Verified examples of Netflix titles on physical media
The Crown demonstrates how uneven availability can be. Sony’s official pages list individual seasons on DVD and Blu-ray, including Season 1, Season 2 and Season 6. Sony also lists a complete-series Blu-ray set and links to recognized retailers. Thus, “the show is on disc” does not mean every edition exists in every format: the complete set is listed as Blu-ray, while the cited individual seasons are listed on both DVD and Blu-ray.
The Night Agent is another documented example. Sony’s current television catalog identifies The Night Agent: Season 1 as “Now on DVD” and separately identifies the series as streaming on Netflix. Check the catalog entry at Sony Pictures’ television catalog.
These examples establish that Netflix-associated originals can receive authorized releases; they do not establish a complete physical catalog for Netflix.
Formats and editions to compare
| Edition | What to verify |
|---|---|
| DVD | Lower resolution, usually broad compatibility with older players, and increasingly inconsistent stock. |
| Standard Blu-ray | Higher picture quality and often more extras; requires a Blu-ray player. |
| 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray | Highest physical-media resolution, but requires compatible hardware and may not exist for the series. |
| Individual season | Confirm the season number, episode count and disc count. |
| Complete-series box set | Confirm that every season is included and whether the set is DVD, Blu-ray or another format. |
| Digital purchase | Immediate access without a disc, but it is not physical ownership and remains tied to the selling platform. |
How to check a particular show
- Search precisely: use the title plus season and format, such as
The Crown season 6 DVDorThe Night Agent season 1 DVD. - Find the studio or distributor page: look for “Now on DVD,” “Now on Blu-ray,” a catalog number or a “Buy” link. Confirm whether it covers one season or the entire series.
- Confirm territory: a U.S. edition may not play in every country, and an import can have different packaging, subtitles, audio or region coding.
- Compare product details: check disc count, episodes, condition, special features, subtitle and audio languages, region code, and DVD-versus-Blu-ray format.
- Use retailer links after verification: compare the official studio information with listings at retailers such as Amazon, Target, Walmart or Barnes & Noble. Stock and third-party sellers change.
- If no authorized edition appears: check library catalogs, reputable used-media dealers, digital stores, other streaming services and distributor announcements.
Where to buy legitimate copies
Start with the rights holder’s site, then follow its retailer links. Sony’s The Crown page and season pages are examples of a useful chain from official identification to retail options. Do not treat a marketplace search result alone as proof that an edition is authorized.

New versus used
- New: generally better condition and packaging, but an out-of-print title may be expensive or unavailable.
- Used: often the only source for discontinued seasons and can cost less, but inspect for scratches, missing discs, incorrect seasons and uncertain provenance.
Warning signs of unofficial or counterfeit discs
A third-party listing can be genuine, but evaluate both seller and product. Potential warning signs include:
- No studio, distributor, catalog number or UPC.
- A “complete series” that the rights holder has never announced.
- Netflix screenshots or artwork without product photographs or manufacturer details.
- Descriptions such as “recorded from streaming,” “custom,” or “made to order.”
- An implausibly small number of discs for the advertised episode count.
- A price far below comparable authorized editions.
- Promises of titles described elsewhere as streaming-only.
A disc containing a show that streams on Netflix is not necessarily Netflix-manufactured. The key question is whether the rights holder officially released or licensed it.
DVD, Blu-ray, digital, streaming or a library?
| Option | Best for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| DVD | Older players and lower-cost physical ownership | Lower quality and limited availability |
| Blu-ray | Better image quality and extras | Requires compatible hardware |
| Digital purchase | Immediate access without discs | Platform and account dependence |
| Streaming | Convenience and no storage | Catalog and licensing can change |
| Library borrowing | Legitimate access at little or no cost | Copies and loan periods vary |
| Used disc | Out-of-print seasons | Condition, completeness and authenticity risks |
What to do when there is no DVD release
- Look for an authorized Blu-ray instead of DVD.
- Buy a legitimate digital season if permanent disc ownership is not essential.
- Search public-library catalogs and interlibrary-loan services.
- Check used dealers for older official releases, verifying region and completeness.
- See whether another streaming service carries the title, while remembering that streaming availability can change.
- Consider an imported edition only after checking region code, NTSC/PAL compatibility, subtitles, audio, edits and season order.
Physical editions can differ from the Netflix stream in music licenses, bonus material, episode edits, subtitles, menus, trailers, aspect ratio and regional censorship. Buying a disc therefore does not guarantee an identical version of what you watched online.
