No—not as a normal video file you can copy to a USB drive. Fandango at Home, formerly VUDU, may let you download eligible titles to certain authorized devices for offline playback in its app, but it does not offer a supported USB-export feature. If you need a movie to play from a flash drive in a generic media player, a Fandango purchase is not the right file format or license for that purpose.
What happened to VUDU?
VUDU is now called Fandango at Home. The name changed, but the important distinction remains: a download offered by the service is for supported app playback, not an unrestricted video file for copying to removable storage.
App download versus a USB video file
Fandango’s Streaming Policy, updated July 1, 2026, describes downloads to certain authorized devices. It does not advertise a way to export a purchased movie as an MP4, MKV, or other generic file.
| Type | What it means | Where it plays |
|---|---|---|
| Fandango at Home download | An app-managed, protected copy associated with the service, account, and authorized device | In supported service software, subject to title and license restrictions |
| Transferable video file | A conventional file that can be copied to a flash drive and played independently | Compatible generic media players, depending on the file format |
Copying hidden app folders, changing a filename or extension, or connecting a phone to a USB-C drive does not turn an app download into a transferable movie. A television’s USB port is storage playback, not authorization to play a protected Fandango download. The service describes access as a license subject to usage rights, rather than ownership of an unrestricted file; see its Terms of Use.

Can you download a Fandango at Home movie for offline viewing?
Sometimes. Fandango says eligible purchased content and some rental content may be downloaded to certain authorized devices. Its current iOS app listing specifically advertises downloads of purchased movies and TV shows to iOS mobile devices. That is not a promise that every title or platform supports downloads. For Android, see the current Google Play app listing and the options shown in your installed app.
Use the official app
- Install or update Fandango at Home from the device’s official app store.
- Sign in to the account that purchased or rented the title.
- Open My Library and select the title.
- If the app offers a Download control, select it and let the download finish while online. Labels and placement can vary by app version.
- Before leaving Wi-Fi, play the title inside the app to check that it works offline on that device.
Keep the app installed and the account available. Offline playback is not guaranteed indefinitely: device authorization, license checks, app status, and content restrictions can affect access. Fandango’s policy also warns that licensing changes may make content unavailable and that streaming or downloading can end when a license expires, changes, or ends.

Purchases, rentals, and other titles
- Purchases (EST): Intended for repeated viewing under the applicable license. Only eligible titles on certain authorized devices may be downloadable.
- Rentals (VOD): The policy allows downloads for some rentals, but the rental’s viewing window still applies. A downloaded rental is not permanent, and it can stop playing when its rental period expires.
- Free or ad-supported titles: Do not assume they can be downloaded; use the availability shown for the title in the app.
What if you use a Windows PC or Mac?
Do not assume desktop offline downloads are supported. Fandango’s policy refers to certain authorized devices, while the current public app-store information clearly identifies mobile downloads. Check the current Fandango at Home app and support information for your specific computer and app version. Web-browser playback is not a USB-download workflow.
Can Movies Anywhere help?
For eligible movies, Movies Anywhere can provide another legitimate way to watch offline in compatible service software, but it still does not create a USB-playable file. Fandango is a participating retailer, and its Movies Anywhere page explains the connection. Link the accounts and check each title: eligibility varies, and TV shows are not handled like Movies Anywhere films.

Movies Anywhere’s Terms of Use limit offline downloads to compatible devices and eligible titles; they permit up to eight compatible devices. The service is for U.S. residents age 18 or older. A Movies Anywhere download remains app-controlled, so linking accounts broadens legitimate access for qualifying films but does not enable USB export.
Why a download button may be missing or offline playback may fail
If there is no Download option
- Make sure you are signed in to the account that bought or rented the title, and that it appears in My Library.
- Update the app, check available device storage, and use a stable internet connection.
- Not every title or device is eligible. For a rental, check that its viewing period has not ended.
- If a purchased title no longer appears, contact Fandango support after confirming the account used for the purchase.
If an existing download will not play
- If the app asks for internet access, it may need to verify the account or license; offline playback should not be treated as permanent.
- If a title plays online but has no download control, the title or device may not support offline downloads.
- If a download vanished after signing out, changing devices, updating the app, or clearing storage, the local copy may need to be downloaded again.
- If the movie only plays inside the app, that is expected for a protected download. If a USB drive shows no playable movie file, that is expected too.
Signing out, reinstalling the app, or clearing app data can remove local downloads. Try less disruptive checks first, and do not reinstall until you are prepared to download eligible titles again. Fandango’s public help information describes its service as U.S.-only; travel or territorial restrictions may also affect availability. See its help page and Streaming Policy.

What to use if USB playback is essential
| Your goal | Practical option | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Watch without data while traveling | Download in the official app, if the title and device offer it | Playback stays within authorized app software; no USB file |
| Watch on a television | Use the Fandango at Home app on a compatible TV or streaming device | Requires supported hardware and service access |
| Play a movie from removable media | Use DRM-free media that is explicitly offered for copying, or personal files you have the right to use | Fandango purchases are not offered as DRM-free USB files |
| Have tangible, hardware-independent offline access | Buy a Blu-ray or DVD and use a compatible disc player | Requires disc hardware and physical storage |
| Access eligible purchased films through another service | Link Fandango to Movies Anywhere and check title eligibility | Eligible films only; still app-based, not USB playback |
If you already own an eligible disc, Fandango’s Disc to Digital offers select conversions starting at $2, with restrictions, location verification, and annual conversion limits. A conversion provides a digital entitlement, not a portable USB file.
Avoid third-party downloaders, stream capture tools, and ripping or screen-recording schemes presented as ways around the restriction. Fandango’s Terms of Use restrict unauthorized downloading, copying, and modification; circumvention can also create legal or contractual issues, and unofficial tools can pose malware or account-security risks. The legal implications of a particular use depend on circumstances and jurisdiction.
