What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a simple overlap, turn on Crossfade. For Spotify-selected, beat-matched transitions, enable Automix. If you want to arrange and save your own transitions, use Mix on an eligible Premium playlist. These are separate tools: Crossfade fades tracks over one another, Automix adapts transitions on supported playlists, and Mix gives you playlist-level controls.
The fastest way to turn on Spotify Crossfade
Spotify’s Crossfade overlaps the end of one song with the beginning of the next by fading the first out while fading the second in. It is the most predictable option for casual listening, parties, workouts and road trips, but it does not promise beat, tempo, key or phrase matching. Spotify documents Crossfade as a Premium feature in its mobile/tablet and desktop apps (Spotify support instructions).
iPhone, iPad and Android
- Open Spotify.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Choose Settings and privacy.
- Tap Playback.
- Under Crossfade, drag the slider to set the overlap.
- Under Track transitions, turn Automix on or off.
- Under Track transitions, turn Gapless playback on or off.
Mac or Windows
- Open Spotify and click your profile picture.
- Select Settings.
- Scroll to Playback.
- Enable Crossfade songs and adjust the slider.
- Turn Automix on or off.
- Enable or disable Gapless playback if it appears in the playback controls.
There is no universally correct slider position. A short overlap is safer for vocal tracks and album listening; a longer one can suit steady dance or workout playlists. Listen to several transitions rather than judging the setting from one pair of songs.
For a more DJ-like result, turn on Automix
Automix is Spotify’s closest built-in option to an automatic DJ transition. Spotify describes it as providing beat-matched, seamless transitions on select Spotify playlists, including when Shuffle is enabled (Spotify support). It is not simply a longer Crossfade: Spotify chooses transition behavior from the tracks and playlist, and you cannot set every transition point manually.

- Compatible Models: Designed for Pioneer DDJ‑SX2, DDJ‑SX3 DJ controllers only
- Reference Part Number: 704‑EN1000‑9788 aftermarket crossfader PCB assembly from HUMARH
- PCB Board Number: 405‑UDJ202‑2441A
- Important Note: This unit features 20 mm long spindle while DJM250, DDJ‑SX, DDJ‑SR, XDJ‑R1 require 15 mm short spindle, not plug‑and‑play for those controllers
- Pre‑Purchase Reminder: Verify your original part number and spindle length prior to ordering to ensure proper fit
Because Automix is track-dependent, it may enter the next song earlier or create a longer blend than you expect. If that obscures an intro or vocal line, switch Automix off and use a shorter ordinary Crossfade. Automix is labeled as a Premium feature.
Use Spotify Mix for custom transitions
Mix is a playlist tool rather than a global Playback setting. On a playlist you created or can edit, select Mix in the playlist toolbar. Start with Auto, then select individual transitions to customize them. Spotify describes controls for transition styles such as Fade and Rise, plus volume, EQ, effects, waveform data, BPM and key. You can save, share and collaborate on mixed playlists with other Premium users (Spotify Newsroom).
- Open an editable playlist.
- Tap or click Mix.
- Choose Auto or select a transition between two tracks.
- Adjust the available style, volume, EQ or effects while viewing waveform, BPM and key information.
- Save the mixed playlist.
- Use Mix again to toggle the playlist mix on or off.
Spotify began desktop rollout on May 19, 2026, but still describes Mix as rolling out to eligible Premium users. Availability can depend on account, country, app version and platform, so a missing button does not necessarily indicate a broken account.
Smart Reorder
With Mix enabled, open Mix, choose Edit, then select Smart Reorder. Spotify reorders the playlist using BPM and key to improve musical flow (Spotify Newsroom).

Crossfade, Automix, Gapless and Mix compared
| Feature | Best for | What it does | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gapless playback | Live albums, classical works and continuous mixes | Removes an artificial pause between tracks | Does not overlap or beat-match songs |
| Crossfade | Simple, predictable overlap | Fades one track out while fading the next in | Usually does not match beats, keys or phrases |
| Automix | Automatic DJ-like playback | Creates beat-matched transitions on supported playlists, including Shuffle | Works only on select playlists and Spotify controls the blend |
| Mix | A prepared, saved playlist set | Offers Auto mode and customizable styles, volume, EQ, effects, BPM and key | Limited to eligible Premium users and supported rollout conditions |
Choose settings for the way you listen
Parties and workouts
Start with a moderate Crossfade and test transitions across the playlist. Automix is worth trying when the list is mostly dance, house, techno or other rhythmically consistent music. Check the result on both headphones and speakers because overlapping bass can sound much heavier on speakers.
Dance and electronic playlists
Try Automix first. For more control, use Mix and place tracks with similar BPM and compatible keys near each other. Build energy gradually instead of jumping randomly between quiet and high-intensity songs.
Mixed-genre playlists
Use Crossfade rather than assuming Automix will suit every track. Keep the overlap short when moving between very different tempos, loudness levels or vocal arrangements.
Albums and continuous sequencing
Turn Crossfade off and use Gapless playback. A long overlap can hide an intentional ending or alter the sequence of a concept album, live recording or DJ mix.

Podcasts, audiobooks and spoken introductions
Disable transition effects for spoken-word listening. Overlapping dialogue can make both the outgoing and incoming speech difficult to understand.
Why Spotify is not crossfading
Playback is using Spotify Connect
Spotify says transition settings cannot be configured while using Spotify Connect. Stop playback, open Spotify directly on the phone or computer, change the setting there, and play locally from that device.
You are not using Premium
Spotify labels Crossfade and Automix as Premium features. In the United States, Spotify’s Premium page currently lists Individual at $12.99 per month after a promotional first month; prices and offers vary by market and date (Spotify Premium).
Automix is missing
Check that you have Premium, that you are using a supported app, and that the playlist is one Spotify supports for Automix. Spotify’s documentation does not promise Automix for every playlist. Connect playback can also prevent configuration.

Mix is missing
Mix is accessed from an editable playlist’s toolbar, not necessarily from Settings. Update the app, then check again; rollout to eligible Premium accounts remains platform- and account-dependent.
Automix cuts in too early
- Turn Automix off.
- Use ordinary Crossfade.
- Shorten the Crossfade slider.
- Use Mix if you need to choose the transition yourself.
Automix is beat-matched rather than a fixed-duration fade, so its timing can vary by track.
Nothing changes after enabling Crossfade
- Stop playback.
- Change the setting in the local Spotify app, not through Connect.
- Restart playback from that device.
- Test two ordinary studio tracks instead of a live recording, spoken program or continuous album.
Spotify’s DJ feature is different
Spotify’s DJ is a Premium personalized listening session that selects music and can provide commentary. Crossfade, Automix and Mix control transitions; they do not turn DJ into a manual mixing deck. Spotify describes DJ as a discovery experience, not a replacement for cueing and performance controls (Spotify Newsroom).
Want to DJ Spotify live?
If “like an actual DJ” means cue points, decks, beat-sync, tempo changes, EQ, effects and live performance, use supported DJ software instead of the Crossfade slider. Spotify announced Premium library integration with rekordbox, Serato and djay, with mobile access for rekordbox and djay announced in addition to desktop on December 11, 2025 (Spotify Newsroom).
