How long do Netflix downloads last? Netflix downloads expire after a title-specific period, not a universal number of days. Netflix says downloads expire “after a certain amount of time,” and the Netflix app shows the relevant information for each movie or episode. You can watch a download repeatedly before it expires.
The commonly repeated claims that every Netflix download lasts 48 hours, seven days, or 30 days are not universal Netflix rules. The practical answer depends on the title, its licensing conditions, your plan’s download limits, and whether the device supports Netflix downloads.
Key takeaways
- Netflix downloads expire after a title-specific period; Netflix does not publish one universal 48-hour, 7-day, or 30-day lifespan.
- A downloaded movie or episode can be watched repeatedly before its expiration date.
- After expiration, you can usually delete the download and download the title again if the title remains available and no licensing limit applies.
- Some titles can be downloaded only a limited number of times per year, and Netflix may display the date when another download becomes available.
- Ad-free plans can allow up to 100 active downloads per device, while ad-supported plans allow 15 total downloads per device per calendar month; these are quantity limits, not expiration periods.
What do the Netflix download expiration rules mean?
Netflix downloads expire after a certain amount of time, but Netflix does not give one fixed expiration period for every movie or episode. Netflix’s official guidance says, “TV shows and movies downloaded on your device will expire after a certain amount of time.” The Netflix app’s information for the particular download is therefore more reliable than general claims that every download lasts 48 hours, seven days, or 30 days.
Netflix also states, “You can watch a download as many times as you’d like before it expires.” Expiration is a deadline for offline access, not a one-play limit. A download can be watched repeatedly while it remains available on the device and the Netflix account remains eligible to play it.

Netflix explains the expiration process in its official guidance for a downloaded title marked “Expired”.
How long can you watch a Netflix download offline?
You can watch a Netflix download offline until the title’s specific expiration deadline. Netflix does not document a single number of days that applies to every downloaded title, so the exact duration can vary according to the title and its licensing conditions.
For a flight or another period without internet access, download the title in advance, open the Downloads section in the Netflix app, and check any expiration information or warning shown for that movie or episode. Downloading earlier does not guarantee a longer offline period; the relevant deadline is determined by Netflix and the title’s rights conditions.
| What can limit offline viewing? | What the limit controls | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| Playback expiration | How long a particular downloaded title remains playable offline | It is not a universal 48-hour, 7-day, or 30-day rule |
| Title-specific licensing limit | How often a title can be downloaded or renewed | It is not the same as the title’s normal playback expiration |
| Plan download quantity | How many active or monthly downloads the account can maintain | It does not make an individual download last longer |
| Device and app support | Whether Netflix downloads are available on the device | A newer device does not extend a download’s expiration |
Can you watch a downloaded Netflix movie more than once?
Yes. You can watch a downloaded Netflix movie or episode more than once before the download expires. Netflix specifically says that a download can be watched “as many times as you’d like before it expires.” Replaying, pausing, or watching the same download several times does not turn it into a one-view file.
Offline playback still depends on the download remaining valid, the title remaining available to your account, and the device being the same device used to download it. A download is not a permanent copy of the movie.

What should you do when a Netflix download expires?
When a Netflix download expires, delete the expired file and download the title again if Netflix still offers the title and no separate download restriction blocks the request.
- Open the Netflix app.
- Open Downloads.
- Select the expired movie or episode.
- Delete the expired download.
- Open the title’s page and select the download option again.
Netflix documents this delete-and-redownload process in its help article about downloads marked “Expired”.
Why did a Netflix download expire, and why can’t you renew it?
A Netflix download may expire because the title’s permitted offline-playback period has ended. Redownloading may also fail for reasons unrelated to the ordinary expiration timer: Netflix may have removed the title from its catalog, or the title may have reached a licensing-based download or renewal limit.
Netflix says that “Some TV shows and movies can only be downloaded a limited number of times per year.” In a documented warning, Netflix may say that a title can be downloaded only one more time or show a date before another download is allowed. Netflix’s one-more-download warning guidance and its download-limit warning guidance describe these separate restrictions.
In one licensing-limit case documented by Netflix, the same title may be unavailable for redownloading for up to a year. That does not mean every Netflix download lasts a year; the period applies to a title-specific renewal restriction shown by Netflix.

Are Netflix’s 15-download and 100-download limits expiration periods?
No. Netflix’s download quantity limits are separate from the amount of time an individual movie or episode remains playable.
| Plan guidance | Stated download quantity | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Ad-free plans | Up to 100 active downloads per device | The maximum number of active downloads a qualifying plan can maintain per device, depending on the plan’s included devices |
| Ad-supported plans | 15 total downloads per device per calendar month | A monthly download allowance that resets on the first day of each calendar month |
According to Netflix’s offline-download guidance, ad-supported plans are limited to 15 total downloads per device per calendar month, while ad-free plans can have up to 100 active downloads per device. The 15-download limit does not mean that each download lasts 15 days, and the 100-download allowance does not make each title expire more slowly.

Netflix identifies Android phones and tablets, iPhone and iPad, Amazon Fire tablets, and Google Chromebooks with the Google Play Store as download-capable device categories. Netflix’s download instructions provide the supported-device guidance.
| Device category | Download support described by Netflix | Important condition |
|---|---|---|
| Android phone or tablet | Supported category | Use the Netflix app and keep the title available for download |
| iPhone or iPad | Supported category | Use the Netflix app on the Apple device |
| Amazon Fire tablet | Supported category | Netflix says Fire OS 7 or later is required for downloads |
| Google Chromebook | Supported when the Chromebook has the Google Play Store | Use the supported Netflix app environment |
| Windows computer | Netflix says downloads are not supported in its Windows app | Use a supported mobile device, Fire tablet, or Chromebook instead |
Netflix’s troubleshooting guidance for titles that cannot be downloaded says the Windows app does not support the download feature and directs users toward supported mobile, Fire tablet, or Chromebook options. Device storage can determine how many titles fit locally, but hardware does not change Netflix’s expiration or licensing rules.
Can a larger phone, tablet, microSD card, or PC utility extend Netflix download life?
No. A larger phone, tablet, microSD card, or storage-cleanup utility may help with device capacity where the Netflix app supports the storage arrangement, but none of those changes extends the expiration period set by Netflix or removes a title-specific licensing limit.

Buying a newer device can matter if the existing device is unsupported or lacks storage. Buying a device cannot make an already downloaded Netflix title last longer. A Windows repair or optimization utility is also not a solution for Netflix offline playback because Netflix says its Windows app does not support downloads.

How should you prepare Netflix downloads for a plane trip?
For a plane trip, download the movie or episodes on a supported device before leaving, confirm that the titles appear in the Netflix app’s Downloads section, and check each title’s expiration information. Choose titles that remain valid for the entire journey rather than assuming every download has the same lifespan.
- Use a supported Android device, iPhone, iPad, Fire tablet, or compatible Chromebook.
- Download while connected to reliable Wi-Fi.
- Check available device storage before downloading several large movies or episodes.
- Review the title’s displayed expiration or warning information.
- Keep the Netflix app and the downloaded files on the same device for offline playback.
- Download replacement titles if a title is close to expiring and Netflix still permits another download.
An ad-supported plan’s monthly download allowance and a title’s licensing limit can affect preparation even when the device has plenty of storage. Plan quantity, title renewal eligibility, and playback expiration are separate checks.
Bottom line
Netflix downloads do expire, but there is no universal Netflix download expiration time. Netflix says downloaded movies and shows expire “after a certain amount of time,” and the app’s information for the specific title is the dependable answer. You can watch the download repeatedly before expiration. After expiration, delete and redownload it when the title is still available and no licensing or plan limit prevents the download.

Can I watch a Netflix download more than once?
Yes. You can watch a downloaded Netflix movie or episode repeatedly before it expires. Expiration is a time limit for offline playback, not a one-view limit.
Can I renew an expired Netflix download?
Usually, delete the expired download from the Downloads section, open the title’s page, and download it again. Redownloading may be unavailable if Netflix removed the title or a licensing-based download limit applies.
Can I watch Netflix downloads offline on a plane?
Netflix downloads can work on Android phones and tablets, iPhone and iPad, Amazon Fire tablets, and Google Chromebooks with the Google Play Store. Netflix says downloads are not supported in its Windows app.
The Bottom Line
Netflix downloads last for a title-specific period, not a guaranteed number of days. Check the expiration information shown in the Netflix app. An expired title can often be downloaded again, but catalog removal and title-specific licensing limits may prevent renewal.
