Kevin Hart’s rise was built in stages: Philadelphia stand-up, an early recurring role on Undeclared, nationally visible comedy specials and tours, and then prominent film and television work. Undeclared was one early credit in that path—not a single breakthrough that, by itself, explains his success.

Before Undeclared: Hart builds a stand-up act in Philadelphia

Hart began performing stand-up after high school while working as a shoe salesman in Philadelphia. His first shows did not immediately establish the voice audiences would later recognize: he initially performed as Lil’ Kev the Bastard and struggled to find material that felt like his own. Comedian Keith Robinson mentored him, encouraging him to draw on real experiences. Hart then began performing under his own name. Biography.com’s May 7, 2026 biography and an IU Auditorium press release recount his early comedy work; the latter describes his amateur-night debut and subsequent club performances.

Undeclared: an early television credit, not the whole story

Hart earned a recurring role on the television series Undeclared, an early screen credit that brought him into television while his stand-up career was developing. The available career accounts establish the role, but do not show that it alone caused his later rise. The timeline is better understood as several forms of visibility accumulating over time: live comedy, recorded specials, television and film.

2009–2011: stand-up specials and a major touring milestone

2009: I’m a Grown Little Man

Biography.com identifies I’m a Grown Little Man as Hart’s first stand-up special. The IU Auditorium press release describes the one-hour special as one of Comedy Central’s highest-rated specials. Together, the accounts mark a move from club performances toward a larger national audience.

2011: Laugh at My Pain

The 2011 Laugh at My Pain project expanded across both live performance and film, but its financial figures refer to different things. Biography.com reports that the tour visited 90 cities and grossed $15 million. The IU Auditorium press release says the feature-film version grossed nearly $8 million at the box office in 2011. The tour gross should not be confused with the film’s box-office result.

2012–2014: film and television broaden Hart’s profile

2012: Think Like a Man

Biography.com calls Hart’s role in Think Like a Man his breakout film role. In a 2015 retrospective, The Washington Post described the film as a pivotal success that solidified his profile as a movie actor. The credit signaled an important change in scale: Hart was no longer building recognition only through stand-up.

2013: Let Me Explain and Real Husbands of Hollywood

Hart’s reach continued across formats. The Washington Post reported that the Let Me Explain tour film grossed $32 million overall. In the same period, Hart created, executive-produced and starred in the television series Real Husbands of Hollywood. The projects show how his comedy could travel through both a theatrical release and a recurring TV format.

2014: Ride Along

Ride Along marked another major step in Hart’s movie career. Biography.com notes the film and its sequel, while the Post’s retrospective timeline treats the 2014 release as the point when Hart’s movie-star status was broadly established. That retrospective framing describes the film’s place in his public profile; it does not reduce his rise to one title.

2017–2022: Hart moves further into production

Hart’s career expanded beyond performing. Biography.com reports that he founded Hartbeat Productions in 2009, launched Laugh Out Loud in 2017 and merged the two in 2022 to create Hartbeat. The sequence marks a shift from building visibility through performances and acting to also developing production ventures.

2024: the Mark Twain Prize recognizes Hart’s comedy career

In 2024, Hart received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at the Kennedy Center. The Associated Press reported on the ceremony, where Hart said, “I didn’t start doing what I was doing to get awards,” and, “I just fell in love with the idea of comedy.” Dave Chappelle, speaking about Hart at the ceremony, called him “a very powerful dreamer.” The award was a later recognition of a career that had already crossed stand-up, television, film and production.
