Judy Garland became a gay icon through more than one route: the emotional force of her performances, the camp appeal of her public image, her role as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, and the yearning carried by “Over the Rainbow.” Those elements gave generations of queer audiences shared symbols and room to find their own meanings in her work. Garland’s funeral also fell one day before the 1969 Stonewall uprising—but there is no persuasive evidence that it caused the revolt.
How did Judy Garland become a gay icon?
Garland (June 10, 1922–June 22, 1969) was a performer from childhood, but her portrayal of Dorothy in the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz became her defining screen role. The Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum connects her standing as a gay icon with her humanity, personal struggles, and camp style. These factors work together: a widely recognized film and character provided shared cultural reference points, while Garland’s expressive performances and public image made them feel personal to many viewers.
A performance style that made feeling visible
Garland’s singing and acting gave audiences an unusually vivid sense of longing, vulnerability, and persistence. Some critics have treated that emotional directness as part of her appeal to gay listeners. In a 1998 Fresh Air review, critic Lloyd Schwartz suggested that “saying or singing the unspeakable outloud” might help explain why Garland and Maria Callas had large gay audiences. That is a critical interpretation, not a claim that all queer fans responded to her in the same way.
Camp, Dorothy, and a shared cultural world
Garland’s camp appeal is another part of the explanation identified by the Smithsonian. Dorothy, the film’s fantastical world, and its familiar imagery became cultural touchstones audiences could reinterpret and share. That helps explain why some people read The Wizard of Oz as meaningful to queer audiences; it does not establish that the film had a single intended queer meaning. The Smithsonian National Museum of American History also discusses the many possible histories of the rainbow symbol and the cultural importance of Oz, rather than presenting one settled origin for its later meanings.

Why “Over the Rainbow” still resonates
“Over the Rainbow” is perhaps the clearest emblem of Garland’s enduring connection with queer audiences. The Library of Congress describes it as a ballad of yearning for escape. Garland’s 1939 Decca recording came out a few weeks after the film’s premiere and became a best-seller. The Library of Congress also quotes Garland in a 1967 interview: “It represents everyone’s wondering why things can’t be a little better.”
That broad longing can carry particular force for listeners who recognize themselves in the desire for a safer, more welcoming life. Its queer resonance is an audience interpretation that developed over time; the available evidence does not show that the song was written as a queer anthem or that Garland defined it that way.

Did Judy Garland’s funeral cause the Stonewall uprising?
No reliable contemporaneous evidence establishes that it did. Garland died on June 22, 1969, aged 47. Thousands attended her New York funeral on June 27. In the early hours of June 28, police raided the Stonewall Inn, and patrons and others resisted. The National Archives dates the uprising to June 28 and describes the police raid as its immediate setting.
Later accounts preserve the emotional proximity of the events. TIME recounts activist Sylvia Rivera’s grief over Garland’s death and notes that Rivera later went to the Stonewall Inn. That recollection supports a personal connection to the moment, not a causal explanation for a collective uprising. TIME also reports that historians David Carter and Rachel Corbman found no persuasive contemporaneous evidence that the funeral triggered Stonewall; accounts from immediately after the events generally did not link them. Corbman points instead to broader catalysts, including police abuse, harassment, homophobia, and growing gay and lesbian activism.

The timing makes the funeral connection memorable, but reducing Stonewall to a reaction to a celebrity’s death obscures the documented conditions and resistance that shaped it.

Garland is often discussed alongside the phrase “Friend of Dorothy,” but the sources cited here do not establish a definitive origin date for it. Nor do they provide a reliable quantitative study of the size of Garland’s queer audience. The evidence supports describing a substantial cultural association and its possible meanings, not assigning it a precise starting point or a numerical measure.
