John Oliver’s 2019 follow-up on Last Week Tonight brought Chiijohn and Shinjo-kun back together after months apart. In the comic reunion video, a message in a bottle sends the mascots on a journey from Japan to New York in search of Oliver.
Who is Chiijohn?
Chiijohn was created for Last Week Tonight with John Oliver; he was not a pre-existing Japanese city mascot. The show introduced him as a companion for Shinjo-kun, Susaki’s official mascot. The story began with Chiitan, an unofficial otter mascot associated with Susaki, whose antics prompted Oliver’s segment. The Guardian’s April 29, 2019 report quotes Oliver’s deliberately fanciful description of Chiijohn as a “41-year-old nearsighted English fairy baby.” That was a comic characterization, not a literal biography.
Oliver said Chiijohn had been adopted by Susaki, as reported by the Guardian. The available reporting does not include municipal confirmation of the arrangement, so it is best understood as part of the show’s playful story.
How the reunion came about
The Television Academy’s 2019 Picture Editing ballot lists the original segment, “The Journey Of ChiiJohn,” as airing April 21, 2019. Months later, Oliver returned to the pair’s story. Scroll’s November 28, 2019 report describes Oliver trying to get in touch with Chiijohn and the mascots being reunited after their separation.

What happens in the reunion video?
In the video’s comic plot, a message in a bottle reaches Chiijohn and Shinjo-kun. They leave Japan and travel to New York to find Oliver, eventually locating him at a television studio. SoraNews24’s November 30, 2019 account recounts those journey beats. They are part of the filmed story, not evidence that the mascots made a real-world international trip.
Why the follow-up mattered
The reunion works as a continuation rather than a new mascot introduction: Chiitan’s story led into the first segment, Chiijohn was presented as a friend for Shinjo-kun, and the later video revisited that friendship. Its humor comes from treating the pair’s separation and search for Oliver like an earnest travel adventure.
