This 2023 video presents “Aaya Masih,” a Hindi Christmas carol credited to N K Das, in a new a cappella choral arrangement. The quartet—Rebecca Silverman, Marienella Phillips, Seumas Begg and Adam Maxey—are UK-based opera singers. The recording is part of The Christmas Project, an initiative led by Nirmal K Das’s daughter, Meneka Das, to share her late father’s music with listeners in India and beyond.
What the video shows
The video is a choral performance of “Aaya Masih,” with four voices and no instrumental accompaniment. Its description calls it a sneak preview of a project featuring “The Songs of Nirmal K Das.” The recording credits name One Aldwych in London as the venue and Glenn Keiles as mixer. The absence of instruments describes the arrangement, not an absence of recording or mixing.
The video description credits the words and music to “N K Das.” Scroll’s 15 December 2023 coverage identifies the carol as a Hindi song sung in churches across India at Christmas and attributes it to Nirmal K Das. Read Scroll’s coverage.

What is The Christmas Project?
Meneka Das described The Christmas Project in a December 2023 interview as a family initiative to share her father’s songs with India and a wider audience. She said people in India and its diaspora sing some of the songs without necessarily knowing who wrote them. The project’s stated purpose is to bring that music and its authorship into view; this account reflects the family’s aims, not an independent review of the full catalogue or its rights.
Meneka Das said she and composer and producer Andrew T Mackay approached arranger and choirmaster Paul Ayers after he heard the song. Mackay then approached opera singers he was working with in London. In her account, the wider project was intended to bring artists from different places together and involve original choir singers from her father’s hometown in Uttar Pradesh. Those were plans described at the time, not confirmation that every planned activity later took place. Read Meneka Das’s interview with Free Press Journal.

Why this arrangement sounds different
Das said the team chose “Aaya Masih” to explore a choral treatment of Hindi compositions. She described the arrangement as voices alone, intended to bring out the song’s character. The result brings an operatic quartet to a carol rooted in Indian church singing, rather than adding an orchestra or other instrumental backing.
The available coverage also places the new rendition alongside a traditional performance, but does not provide enough detail about the traditional version’s performers or arrangement to support a close musical comparison. The meaningful distinction is the documented one: a newly arranged quartet performance versus a traditional version whose credits and musical specifics are not established in that coverage.

The carol’s title and attribution
Readers may encounter the song under more than one title. The video calls it “Aaya Masih”; a lyrics page uses “Aaya Masih Duniya Mein Tu.” A comment on that page by Vijay Das says his father, Nirmal Kumar Das, wrote it as “Aaya Masih Charni Mey tu” and refers to an earlier Methodist hymnal credit. That comment is a family attribution lead, not authoritative documentation of copyright ownership or a legal finding. See the lyrics page and its title variants.
A brief background on Nirmal K Das
In its December 2023 interview, Free Press Journal reports that Das grew up in a village in Azamgarh, was influenced by hearing Handel’s Messiah, and later worked as an assistant commissioner for central excise. The interview says he formed the Muirabad Choir after moving to Muirabad in Allahabad, with an ambition to write Hindi and Bhojpuri hymns using four-part harmony and counterpoint. Scroll likewise reports that he formed an amateur choir that performed across north India, particularly at Christmas and Easter. These are biographical details reported by those sources.
