Hunter’s marriage to Kathleen Buhle was ending around this period. Published Washington Post accounts conflict on when that divorce was finalized, so a precise year is not established here. That uncertainty does not change the reported chronology of Hunter and Hallie’s relationship.
What later accounts say about their relationship
Hallie’s 2024 testimony in Hunter Biden’s federal gun trial included details about a turbulent relationship during 2018. As reported by The Washington Post, she described periods when they were not in contact, her concern for Hunter, and efforts to help each other seek sobriety. Those remarks came in the context of trial testimony and should not be treated as a complete account of their romance or as proof of why it began.

When did Hunter and Hallie reportedly split?
Reports placed the breakup in 2019, but the accounts characterize it differently. On May 2, The Washington Post described the split as alleged and attributed the report to Page Six. That Post report did not establish a jointly announced breakup date. CBS News reported that the pair had split in April; it also reported that Hunter married Melissa Cohen on May 16, 2019. CBS News’ account provides that contemporaneous timeline.
