Harrison Ford’s wealth is generally attributed to decades of acting, blockbuster roles in the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises, and substantial reported pay for returning to them. The title’s $230 million figure is not confirmed by the available reporting: AARP described a reported $300 million fortune in 2011, and Fortune called Ford’s estimated net worth “north of $300 million” in 2026. Neither figure is an audited accounting.
How Ford began earning a living
Ford’s early acting work was inconsistent. In a 2026 Fortune profile, he recalled that “Acting was not yet paying the bills” and that he supported his growing family with carpentry jobs. Fortune says the work lasted roughly 15 years.
Carpentry also brought Ford into contact with people in the film industry. While working on a project connected to Francis Ford Coppola, Ford was asked to read with actors auditioning for Star Wars. That opportunity led to his breakthrough as Han Solo. The carpentry years were therefore both a source of income and part of the path that brought him to a major acting role. From a modest reported Star Wars payment to a major sequel payday
Ford’s compensation for the original Star Wars was modest by the standards of the franchise’s later blockbusters. Fortune reported in 2026 that Ford said he earned $1,000 a week for the film; the total was reportedly around $10,000. These are historical reported amounts, not a contract record published by the studio.

For his return as Han Solo in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Fortune reported in 2015 that Ford received $25 million upfront and a small share of the film’s gross earnings. The report does not establish his final payout, and it does not provide an audited accounting of the share. The contrast illustrates how the value of returning to a signature franchise could differ from the pay reported for Ford’s first film; it does not reveal his total earnings from the series. Indiana Jones and other long-running roles
Ford’s Indiana Jones films added another high-profile franchise to a career built around enduring screen roles. AARP reported in 2011 that Ford earned $65 million for his most recent Indiana Jones film at that time. That is a single historical report, not a figure that can be applied to every Indiana Jones installment or treated as a verified lifetime total. (AARP, 2011)

Together, the reported payments for Star Wars and Indiana Jones show why franchise work is central to accounts of Ford’s wealth: leading roles made him a star, and later returns to familiar characters reportedly commanded much larger sums. They do not, on their own, show how much he retained after taxes, expenses, or other financial decisions.
