To interact with Twitch chat, sign in to a Twitch account, open a live channel, open its chat panel, type your message, and press Enter on desktop or tap Chat on mobile. You can also reply to messages, use emotes, redeem Channel Points, join polls and Predictions, Cheer with Bits, and send private Whispers when the channel and your account allow those features.
What you need before chatting
- A Twitch account, signed in on the web, mobile app, mobile website, or a supported TV app.
- A live channel with chat enabled.
- Any verification or eligibility required by that channel, such as a verified email address, verified phone number, follower waiting period, or subscription.
You may be able to watch without signing in, but Twitch requires an account to participate in chat. Channel owners can also restrict who may post. See Twitch’s Chat Basics and Chat Verification Settings.
How to send a public message
Desktop or web
- Open the live channel.
- Find the chat panel, normally beside the video.
- Click the message field.
- Type your message.
- Press Enter.
Mobile
- Open the Twitch app or mobile website and open the live channel.
- Expand the chat panel if it is collapsed.
- Tap the chat field and type.
- Tap Chat or the send control.
Layouts and button locations change between desktop, mobile, embedded players, and app versions. Sending successfully only puts the message into chat; it does not guarantee that the streamer will see or answer it.
How to mention or reply to someone
Mention
Type @username and choose the suggested account when it appears. This identifies or highlights the person, but it does not attach your message to one particular earlier message.

Reply
A reply is linked to a specific message. On desktop, you can use the reply control on a recent message, enter @username and select the user, or press Alt + Enter on Windows or Option + Enter on Mac to start reply mode. Use the arrow controls to select among that user’s recent messages; Alt/Option + Up or Down navigates between messages. The shortcut may not be available when the person has not recently posted. Cancel reply mode to return to ordinary live chat. Interface details differ by client. Twitch documents these functions at Chat Basics.
Emotes, GIFs, and other message tools
Emotes
Type an emote code or open the emote picker and select an available Twitch or channel emote. What you see depends on global availability, the channel, your account, and eligibility such as a subscription. Seeing an emote picker does not mean every emote is available to you.
GIFs
Twitch’s current guidance says Tier 2 and Tier 3 paid subscribers can send GIF messages when the streamer has enabled the GIF Keyboard. Select the emote icon, open GIFs, search, choose a GIF, and send it. GIFs can be disabled by the streamer or blocked by emote-only mode. Channel Points, polls, Predictions, Bits, and Power-Ups
Channel Points
Channel Points are channel-specific rewards, not transferable currency. Depending on the channel, you can earn them through activities such as watching, following, raids, watch streaks, cheering, or gifted subscriptions. To redeem them, select the Channel Points icon near the bottom of chat, review the rewards, choose one, follow any instructions, and confirm. A redemption might highlight your message, request an action, post in chat, or place you in a creator-managed queue. Rewards and costs are set by each channel. Twitch’s viewer guide gives example earn rates, including 10 points for five minutes of non-subscriber viewing, 50 points for certain active-viewing claims, 250 points for joining a raid, 300 points for following, and subscriber viewing multipliers of 1.2×, 1.4×, and 2× for Tiers 1, 2, and 3. Twitch says rates can change, so treat these as examples rather than permanent rules.
Polls
When a streamer or moderator starts a poll, select an available answer in the poll panel and submit it before voting closes. You do not need to spend Bits or Channel Points unless the channel specifically makes those part of the event.
Predictions
For a Channel Points Prediction, select Predict, choose an outcome, select how many Channel Points to commit, and confirm before the submission window closes. Twitch currently documents a one-to-30-minute submission period, two to 10 outcomes, and a maximum of 250,000 Channel Points per prediction. These limits and regional rules can change; Predictions require a monetized channel and may be unavailable in some locations. Bits and Cheers
Bits are Twitch’s paid virtual good. Select the Bits icon in the chat box, choose a Cheermote or amount, optionally add a message, and confirm. Cheering, minimum amounts, pins, and alerts depend on channel settings. Prices vary by country, platform, taxes, and current checkout flow, so there is no universal dollar conversion to quote. A paid interaction may be highlighted without guaranteeing a response. Twitch explains the feature at Cheering for Partners and Affiliates.

Power-Ups
Custom Power-Ups are optional channel interactions available only in participating channels and may use Bits. Their appearance and cost are creator- and region-dependent; see Twitch’s viewer Power-Ups guide.
How to send a private Whisper
Twitch calls private messages Whispers. From chat, click or tap a username and choose Whisper, use the web Whisper panel, or on mobile open Activity and select Whispers. You can also type:
/w username your-message
For example: /w streamername Is the game audio working now?
Whispers are visible only to the sender and recipient, but recipients can block messages from strangers, enable Do Not Disturb, or block an individual account. As of Twitch’s current help guidance, new accounts may have restricted Whisper access until phone verification, users can contact up to 40 different users per day, and existing conversations can continue. Chat suspensions can also prevent Whispers. Use private messages for genuinely private coordination or a sensitive issue, not as a way to bypass ordinary chat rules. See How to Use Whispers.

What badges and names mean
Badges can identify a broadcaster, moderator, VIP, subscriber, Twitch staff member or administrator, Bits activity, or another channel achievement. A moderator is not necessarily the streamer; moderators are authorized to help manage that channel’s chat. Badge designs and permissions vary. Twitch’s references are the Chat Badges Guide and Managing Roles for Your Channel.
Why can’t I chat?
Read the notice shown in chat first. Common causes are:
| Restriction or problem | What it means |
|---|---|
| Follower-only | You must follow for the period selected by the channel before posting. |
| Subscriber-only | Only subscribers and permitted roles can chat. |
| Emote-only | Your message must contain permitted emotes rather than ordinary text. |
| Slow mode | You must wait between messages. |
| Unique chat | Repeated messages are blocked; Twitch describes messages as needing to be unique and at least nine characters long. |
| Email or phone verification | Your account must satisfy the channel’s verification requirement. |
| Timeout or channel ban | You cannot post for the timeout period or while banned from that channel. |
| Site-wide suspension | You cannot use chat across Twitch until the suspension ends. |
| Blocked terms or links | Automod or channel filters may remove the message. |
| Technical problem | The app, page, connection, or session may need to be refreshed. |
Use this order to diagnose a failed message:
- Confirm that you are signed in and that the account is not suspended.
- Read the chat notice for a verification, follower, subscriber, slow-mode, or ban explanation.
- Verify your email or phone if Twitch requests it.
- Wait out any follower requirement or slow-mode timer.
- Try a short message without links or potentially blocked terms; use only permitted emotes in emote-only mode.
- Reload the page or restart the app.
- Try another supported client, such as desktop web, mobile web, or the mobile app.
- Contact Twitch Support if no channel restriction explains the failure.
Viewer commands beginners can use
Commands can change, be disabled, or depend on account and channel permissions. Twitch’s current command reference is Chat Commands.
/me messageposts an action-style message where supported./color colorchanges your chat-name color where your account and Twitch plan allow it./ignore usernamehides that user’s messages for you./w username messagesends a Whisper.
Commands such as /followers, /slow, /subscribers, /emoteonly, /uniquechat, and /prediction normally control channel modes or events and are for broadcasters or moderators, not ordinary viewers.

Public chat, Whispers, and safety
Choose the right channel
- Use public chat for stream-related questions, reactions, community conversation, polls, Predictions, and rewards.
- Use a Whisper only for private coordination or a sensitive matter, and accept that the recipient may block it.
- Free interactions include ordinary messages, replies, mentions, available emotes, Channel Points, and many polls. Bits, subscriptions, subscriber emotes, some GIF access, and certain Power-Ups depend on payment or account status.
Keep interactions welcome
- Read the channel rules before posting.
- Do not flood chat, repeat messages, advertise another channel, or post unsolicited links.
- Never share personal information or pressure a streamer for attention, gifts, or private contact.
- If someone is abusive, use Ignore, Block, or Report instead of escalating. Twitch describes these tools at How to Manage Harassment in Chat.
- Moderators may remove messages, time out users, or ban them according to the channel’s rules.
Fast chats and Shared Chat
In a busy channel, use a reply, mention the intended person, or a Channel Point message highlight if the channel offers one. There is no guarantee that a streamer will see any individual message. Twitch Shared Chat can combine participating channels; each channel retains its own controls, and the rules of the channel from which you post still matter. See Shared Chat.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I chat on Twitch without an account?
No. You may be able to watch while signed out, but Twitch requires you to sign in to participate in chat.
Are Channel Points free?
They are generally earned through activity in a channel rather than purchased, and they are usable only in the channel where you earned them.
Are Bits free?
No. Bits are a paid Twitch virtual good, with pricing that varies by region, platform, taxes, and checkout conditions.
Why can’t I use a GIF?
GIF messages require the streamer to enable the GIF Keyboard, and Twitch’s current guidance limits them to Tier 2 and Tier 3 paid subscribers. Emote-only mode can also prevent GIF messages.
Can a streamer see my Whisper?
The intended recipient can see it, but the recipient may block Whispers or have privacy settings that reject messages from strangers.
Does sending Bits guarantee a response?
No. A Cheer may be highlighted or trigger an alert, but whether the streamer notices or responds depends on the channel.
