What was announced
The agreement covers two connected discovery experiences rather than a confirmed replacement for JioHotstar’s existing app or for ChatGPT’s normal functions.
Conversational search inside JioHotstar
According to the report, JioHotstar is expected to use OpenAI’s API for a search interface that accepts natural-language text and voice prompts. It is intended to search across movies, shows and live sports, then recommend programming using a user’s preferences and viewing history.

JioHotstar recommendations inside ChatGPT
The companies also plan to bring JioHotstar discovery into ChatGPT. ChatGPT could show relevant recommendations and provide links that take a user to the corresponding programming or catalog page in JioHotstar. The announcement describes discovery and referral, not playback of JioHotstar video inside the ChatGPT app.
Is the AI search available now?
Not on the evidence publicly described in the February 19 report. The wording is about what OpenAI and Reliance plan to add and plan to extend. No confirmed public launch date, nationwide rollout date, beta URL or waitlist was provided.
There is also no published list of eligible subscription tiers, supported devices or countries outside India. Until OpenAI, Reliance or JioHotstar publishes those details—or users can verify the feature in an official product release—it is more accurate to call this an announced integration than a generally available product.
What users might be able to ask
The announcement confirms conversational discovery, but it does not publish a set of supported commands. These are illustrative examples of the kind of request the design could accommodate, not confirmed prompts:

The companies have not said whether the system will reliably answer plot, cast, release-date, age-rating, schedule or plan-availability questions. Those answers would depend on the catalog data supplied to the search system and how frequently that data is updated.
How conversational search differs from a normal catalog search
Traditional catalog search usually matches a title, actor, genre or keyword. A conversational interface can combine several constraints in one request—for example, language, mood, duration, actor and whether an event is live.
The recommendation layer could also combine the current prompt with explicit preferences, observed behavior and contextual information:
- Explicit preferences: selected genres, languages, actors or teams.
- Observed behavior: viewing history, searches, watchlist activity and completion behavior.
- Contextual signals: the prompt itself, time, device and availability of a live event.
The public report does not say which company controls ranking, metadata, personalization or moderation. An OpenAI-powered interface should not be read as proof that OpenAI independently decides every result a JioHotstar user sees.

What “powered by OpenAI’s API” means
API use generally means JioHotstar’s product is being built with OpenAI services. It does not mean that every JioHotstar subscriber receives a ChatGPT account, gets all ChatGPT features or sees JioHotstar’s entire catalog in the standard ChatGPT app immediately.
The report does not identify the model, API product, hosting arrangement or data-processing terms. It also does not disclose whether any ChatGPT-side JioHotstar feature would require a paid ChatGPT plan.
Languages: “multiple,” but not yet specified
The report says the planned experience will support multiple languages. It does not name them. That means it would be premature to promise support for Hindi, English, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Marathi or any other particular language.

Live sports are included, with important limits
Live sports are explicitly included in the reported scope. However, no sport-by-sport index, real-time update guarantee or direct-to-stream behavior has been announced.
Rights and access could still determine what a user sees. The public description does not explain how the system handles a match that has ended, moved platforms, is unavailable in a particular region or requires a subscription tier the user does not have.
How personalization may work—and what is unknown
Recommendations are expected to use preferences and viewing history, but the companies have not explained where that processing occurs. It is not established that OpenAI will receive a user’s complete viewing history.
Before using such a feature, users and regulators will reasonably want answers to these questions:

- Are prompts stored by JioHotstar, OpenAI, both companies or neither?
- Is viewing history sent to the OpenAI API?
- Are prompts or voice transcripts used to train models?
- Can users delete search history or disable personalization?
- Is voice retained as audio, or converted to text and discarded?
- Are children’s profiles treated differently?
- How are sensitive viewing inferences protected?
None of these terms is disclosed in the available announcement, so they should remain open due-diligence questions rather than assumptions about data sharing.

For OpenAI, the deal offers a prominent consumer distribution path in India without requiring entertainment discovery to begin in ChatGPT. The report places the announcement within an “OpenAI for India” expansion involving infrastructure, enterprise and education partnerships, alongside plans for offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru later in 2026 in addition to an existing New Delhi office.
The move also fits a broader streaming trend: the report cites Netflix testing ChatGPT-powered search and Google adding Gemini-powered discovery features to Google TV. Those examples provide industry context, not evidence that JioHotstar’s system will use the same technology or deliver the same results.

- Do not buy ChatGPT Plus, Pro or another plan solely because of this announcement; no paid-plan requirement has been disclosed.
- Do not create an OpenAI API account to watch JioHotstar. The API is a developer service, separate from consumer viewing subscriptions.
- When the feature appears, verify whether results are included in your plan and region before assuming a title or live event is playable.
