A QR code in a live stream is part of the video image. Your phone reads the pattern, decodes the information it contains—often a web address—and offers an action such as opening that site. The code might simply point to public information, or it might be part of a more sensitive process such as authorizing a device. Check what it asks you to do before proceeding.
What a QR code in a live stream does
A QR code is a two-dimensional symbol that encodes data. ISO/IEC 18004:2024 specifies QR-code symbology, encoding methods, symbol formats, dimensions, error correction, decoding, and production quality (ISO/IEC 18004:2024). In a broadcast, the symbol is simply drawn into the video picture. The live stream transmits that picture; it does not itself scan the code or determine what the code means.
The encoded payload is often a URL, but it can also be custom information intended for a particular app. What happens after a scan depends on that payload and the software reading it.
What happens when you scan one
- A creator or service prepares the data. The information encoded in the symbol may be a public web address or app-specific data.
- The code is shown on screen. It is part of the video image, like a graphic or title card.
- Your phone reads the pattern. A camera or compatible reader recognizes the symbol and decodes its payload. Apple’s VisionKit documentation, for example, describes recognizing codes in live camera video and handling the resulting payload; that is one implementation, not a requirement for every phone or platform (Apple VisionKit).
- Your device offers an action. It may offer to open a website or take another action supported by the payload. Review the destination or request before accepting it.
Can you scan a QR code that is playing on your phone?
Usually, scanning means using a camera to read the code displayed on another screen—for example, watching a stream on a television or computer and scanning it with your phone. If the video and camera are on the same phone, the camera cannot normally scan the picture displayed behind it. Use another device, or use a trusted QR-reading feature that can process a saved screenshot or image if your phone supports it. The exact options vary by device and operating system.

A link is not the same as a sign-in or authorization code
Some QR codes simply lead to information. Others are part of a cross-device flow: one device displays a code and another scans it to authorize access or transfer a session. These are distinct processes. In cross-device authorization, the second device may grant a service access on the first; in session transfer, a session already authenticated on one device moves to another. RFC 10027 distinguishes the two and discusses risks when codes are conveyed over an unauthenticated channel (IETF RFC 10027).
Do not assume a code is a login code simply because it appears during a stream. Its purpose, whether it expires, and whether it can be used once are implementation-specific. There is no single workflow shared by all streaming platforms. If a broadcast asks you to scan a code to connect a device or account, verify the steps in that platform’s official documentation and make sure the action is one you intended to take.

How to judge whether a stream QR code is safe
- Use your device’s built-in camera or a trusted reader. The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security advises against QR-scanner apps from unknown providers (Canadian Centre for Cyber Security: “Security considerations for QR codes”).
- Inspect the destination before opening it. Check the domain carefully, especially for unexpected spellings or a destination unrelated to what the stream promised. Do not continue if you cannot verify where the link leads.
- Pause at requests for credentials, payment, personal information, or permissions. A QR payload can prompt actions beyond opening a website. The Canadian Centre’s examples include downloading an app, joining a Wi-Fi network, creating a contact, sending a message, and dialing a number. Treat an unexpected request as a reason to stop and verify independently.
- Be particularly cautious with authorization and session-transfer prompts. Do not approve access or move a session unless you initiated the process and understand which account or service is involved.
- Judge the request, not just the presenter. A familiar-looking video or host does not prove that a code is legitimate; a code can be copied and shown in a different context.
RFC 10027 notes that short-lived or time-bound codes can reduce the period in which an intercepted code might be exploited. That is a system-design safeguard, not a reason for viewers to approve a request without checking its context.
What creators should know before displaying a code
For a creator, the basic production task is to place a clear QR image in the video and make its purpose understandable to viewers. State what the code should open or authorize, and avoid asking viewers to approve access without explaining the service and account involved. Keep any sensitive authorization flow within the official platform’s documented process.

Platform-specific creation steps, expiration rules, and one-time-use behavior cannot be inferred from the fact that a code appears in a stream. Check the official documentation for the actual streaming platform or software rather than assuming all services generate or handle codes alike.

If you are asking about QR codes because you want a video to remain live continuously, that is a separate production need: a QR code does not keep a broadcast running. For a do-it-yourself setup, use the streaming software and workflow supported by your YouTube channel, and consult YouTube’s official instructions for starting and managing a live stream. Make sure you have rights to the video and audio you broadcast. A live presentation does not remove copyright obligations, and permission to use material does not by itself guarantee that it complies with YouTube’s monetization policies for reused content.
