You normally cannot publish an independent music release directly through Spotify. The standard route is to use a music distributor, which delivers your audio and metadata to Spotify, handles distribution administration, and pays royalties according to its agreement with you. Spotify for Artists is free, but it is primarily used to claim and manage your artist profile after your release is delivered—not to upload an ordinary public release.
The practical process is: choose a legitimate distributor, prepare your master and rights information, submit the release with a future date, monitor delivery, claim your Spotify for Artists profile, and pitch an unreleased song at least seven days before release.
What you can—and cannot—upload to Spotify
Spotify’s current guidance directs artists to work with a music distributor or record label to get music onto the service. This applies to independent artists, bedroom producers, bands, and creators moving from SoundCloud, YouTube, or Bandcamp.
- Public music distribution: Normally requires a distributor or label.
- Spotify for Artists: A free service for claiming and managing an existing artist profile, viewing analytics, customizing your page, and pitching unreleased music.
- Local Files: A private playback feature that lets you listen to files from your own device. It does not publish those files for other Spotify users.
- Podcasts: Use Spotify’s separate podcast workflow, such as Spotify for Creators or another podcast host. It is not the music-release process described here.
In other words, creating a Spotify account or a Spotify for Artists account is not enough to make your song publicly available.

What is a music distributor?
A music distributor is the intermediary between you and streaming services. Depending on the provider and your plan, it generally:
- Delivers your audio files, artwork, credits, and metadata to Spotify and other services.
- Manages platform delivery requirements and licensing administration.
- Reports usage and pays the artist or rights holder.
- May distribute to Apple Music, YouTube Music, Amazon Music, TikTok, Instagram, and other platforms.
Spotify maintains a directory of preferred and recommended providers. Being listed does not mean a service is the cheapest, fastest, or best choice for every artist; compare its current terms, fees, support, and takedown policy before paying.
Prepare everything before you upload
1. A finished master
Upload the final, mastered version rather than a rough demo. Spotify’s onboarding guidance recommends the highest-quality lossless files, while the exact accepted format, sample rate, bit depth, file size, and encoding rules are set by the distributor you choose. WAV and FLAC are commonly accepted or recommended, but check the distributor’s current specifications.
- Confirm that the master is the intended final version.
- Check for clipping, unwanted noise, and unintended silence.
- Verify the track order for an EP or album.
- Label clean, explicit, instrumental, radio-edit, remix, live, and alternate versions accurately.

2. Cover artwork
Prepare artwork that meets the distributor’s current image rules. Requirements can change, so do not rely on a universal pixel-size checklist found in an old article.
Do not use artwork that contains copyrighted material you have not licensed, misleading Spotify branding, URLs, phone numbers, pricing, promotional claims, or the name of an artist or song that is not actually part of the release. Avoid low-resolution or visibly stretched images. Spotify links to current cover-art guidance through its artist support center.
3. Accurate metadata and credits
Have the following information ready:
- Primary artist name and any participating artists.
- Release title and each track title.
- Version information, such as “Live,” “Remix,” “Radio Edit,” or “Instrumental,” where applicable.
- Single, EP, or album designation.
- Original release date if this is a re-release.
- Planned release date.
- Songwriters and composers.
- Producers, featured artists, and other contributors.
- Label name, if applicable.
- Genre and language.
- Explicit-content status.
- Copyright and master-rights information.
- ISRC and UPC/EAN codes, if already assigned.
Spotify specifically identifies album title, credits, release date, and cover art as part of release setup. Treat contributor roles carefully: a featured artist, remixer, producer, songwriter, and primary artist are not interchangeable metadata fields.
4. Rights clearance
You must have the rights or permissions needed to distribute the recording. Owning an MP3—or having paid for an instrumental—does not automatically give you every right required for commercial streaming.
Check the paperwork for:
- Samples and interpolations.
- Beat leases and royalty-free material.
- Collaborator and featured-artist agreements.
- Remixes and unofficial edits.
- Cover-song licensing.
- AI-generated or AI-assisted material.
A beat or sample license may restrict Spotify distribution, monetization, Content ID, commercial use, total streams, the number of artists who may use it, or registration with a rights-collection system. Keep contracts and permissions in one place.

How to upload your music to Spotify

Choose a distributor
Start with Spotify’s provider directory, then compare the details that matter to your release schedule and rights situation:
- Annual subscription versus pay-per-release pricing.
- Any percentage of royalties retained.
- Whether music stays online after cancellation.
- Delivery speed and customer support.
- Royalty splits for collaborators.
- Cover-song licensing and territorial coverage.
- Publishing administration.
- YouTube Content ID and social-platform monetization.
- Use of existing ISRC and UPC/EAN codes.
- Multiple-artist or label support.
- Takedown, re-upload, and catalog-transfer policies.
- Payout methods, tax requirements, and minimum thresholds.

Create an account and choose the plan
Expect to provide your legal identity, payment details, tax information, artist name, rights declarations, release information, and destination stores. Read whether optional services—such as cover licensing, publishing administration, mastering, Content ID, or expedited delivery—are included or charged separately.

Upload the audio, artwork, and metadata
Use the distributor’s upload form, select Spotify as a destination, and enter every field exactly as it appears in your rights documents. For example, DistroKid’s official upload instructions describe creating an account, selecting a plan, completing the upload form, and selecting Spotify from the partner list.

Confirm rights and contributor information
Answer the distributor’s ownership, sample, cover-song, and content questions honestly. Do not describe a leased beat, cover recording, or AI-assisted track as wholly original if the agreement or platform rules require additional permission or disclosure.

Set a future release date
Submit several weeks ahead of your target date, particularly for a first release or an important campaign. Spotify’s confirmed minimum for editorial pitching is at least seven days before release; that is not a guarantee that distribution, profile access, corrections, and editorial review will all be completed within seven days.
A future date gives you time to verify the artist page, prepare promotional material, upload eligible profile content, coordinate collaborators, and correct metadata.

Submit and monitor delivery
Your distributor normally checks the release before sending it to Spotify. A submission may be rejected or delayed because of incorrect artist roles, duplicate content, unclear rights, unsuitable artwork, suspicious metadata or streaming patterns, artist-name conflicts, incomplete songwriter information, or audio-format problems.
Track the difference between submitted to the distributor, delivered to Spotify, visible in Spotify, and available on the scheduled release date. They are separate stages.

Claim your Spotify for Artists profile
When possible, obtain the artist link or URI from your distributor and use it to identify the correct profile in Spotify for Artists. Spotify says independent artists can claim access without a record-label deal. Apply early—ideally at least seven days before release—so you can prepare the profile and pitch an unreleased track.

Complete and manage the profile
After access is approved, Spotify for Artists can generally be used to manage your profile image, biography, social links, Artist Pick or featured content, playlists, merchandise and concert integrations, analytics, and Canvas where eligible. These tools manage your presence after distribution; they do not replace the distributor.

Pitch one unreleased song
Spotify for Artists lets you submit one unreleased song for consideration by Spotify’s playlist editors at least seven days before its release date. Provide accurate genre, mood, language, and context. Pitching is not a promise of editorial placement.
A service promising guaranteed Spotify streams, guaranteed editorial placement, or algorithmic exposure is a serious warning sign. Artificial streaming can lead to withheld royalties, takedowns, or account consequences.
How much does it cost?
Spotify for Artists is free to join. The potentially paid service is distribution. Costs vary by provider, country, currency, plan, taxes, optional services, and the date you sign up.

Examples from Spotify’s provider directory include CD Baby, which is described as having no annual fees, and RouteNote, which is listed as offering both a free plan and a 100%-royalty subscription plan. “Free” does not necessarily mean you keep all revenue, and “100% royalties” refers to a provider’s stated distribution model—not every possible publishing, performance, mechanical, neighboring-rights, or optional-service income.

Exact terms should be checked before purchase. TuneCore’s pricing page, checked August 18, 2026, lists unlimited plans starting at $24.99 per year, plus pay-as-you-go pricing of $24.99 per year for singles and $44.99 per year for albums; verify the current checkout price and plan conditions. TuneCore also says its plans distribute to more than 150 digital stores and social platforms.
Amuse, LANDR, and other providers offer different combinations of distribution, career services, mastering, support, or artist tools. Choose according to your release frequency and needs rather than assuming a directory listing makes one provider universally best.
Which distributor model should I choose?
- One occasional single or album: Compare CD Baby and other pay-per-release services, including future update and takedown costs.
- Several releases each year: Compare subscription plans such as DistroKid and TuneCore, including what happens if you cancel.
- No upfront budget: Investigate RouteNote’s free tier, but check its revenue share, delivery speed, and feature limitations.
- Need mastering too: LANDR may be relevant if you also need production or mastering tools; it may be less attractive if your master is already finished.
- Signed to a label: Check your agreement first. The label may control distribution, metadata, artwork, timing, and royalty accounting.
How long does Spotify take to publish music?
There is no single guaranteed publication time that applies to every distributor, release, country, and review. Distributor processing, delivery to Spotify, Spotify’s processing, profile matching, rights checks, and your scheduled release date are separate steps.
For a planned campaign, submit several weeks early. The seven-day Spotify guidance is specifically relevant to pitching an unreleased song to playlist editors; it should not be treated as a guaranteed delivery deadline or a promise that your music will be live exactly seven days after submission.

Troubleshooting common problems
My music is not live on release day
Check whether the distributor has approved and delivered the release, whether Spotify has processed it, whether the release date uses the intended time zone, and whether artwork or metadata triggered a review. Also check for a profile-matching issue, takedown, or rights dispute. Contact the distributor first when its dashboard shows a delivery or approval problem. Spotify has a specific artist-support route for music that is not live on release day.
My song went to another artist’s profile
This is usually a profile-matching problem, not proof that the upload failed. Do not immediately create a duplicate release. Give the distributor the correct artist profile link where supported and request a correction or profile transfer through the distributor or Spotify’s artist-support process.
The release was rejected
Read the rejection reason rather than repeatedly resubmitting. Common causes include unclear samples or cover rights, duplicate content, incorrect contributor roles, poor artwork, incomplete songwriter details, artist-name conflicts, suspicious metadata, and audio-format problems. Correct the underlying issue and retain evidence of your permissions.
The artwork was rejected
Re-export the image according to the distributor’s current rules. Remove unlicensed imagery, misleading platform branding, contact details, prices, promotional claims, or names unrelated to the release.

I uploaded a duplicate or re-release
If you are replacing an existing release, coordinate the change with your distributor. Preserve the original ISRC where the distributor allows and the recording is genuinely the same. Re-uploading without a plan can create duplicate tracks or a second Spotify URL.
The credits are wrong
Ask the distributor about a metadata correction before creating a new release. Check artist roles, featured-artist spelling, songwriter information, version labels, explicit status, and release dates against your agreements and registration records.
I have a payout or account problem
Review the distributor’s identity, tax, payment-method, minimum-payout, and rights-verification requirements. Spotify for Artists analytics does not replace the distributor’s royalty statement, and distribution to Spotify does not automatically register every publishing or neighboring-rights income stream.
Royalties: what distribution does and does not cover
Do not rely on a universal “Spotify per-stream rate.” Spotify says rights holders receive royalties when songs are played, but the amount and payment timing depend on the applicable royalty system, rights ownership, and your agreements with a label or distributor.
Keep these categories separate:
- Master-recording royalties: Income associated with the sound recording.
- Composition and publishing royalties: Income associated with the underlying song.
- Distributor payouts: Money the distributor passes to you under its agreement.
- Performance and mechanical royalties: Separate rights-income categories that may require registration or collection through the appropriate organizations.
- Neighboring rights: Rights-related income that may follow different rules from master and composition royalties.
Uploading a song through a distributor does not automatically mean every possible royalty stream has been registered.

Release-day checklist
- Final lossless master approved.
- Artwork meets the distributor’s current rules.
- Artist and track names are spelled consistently.
- Credits, contributors, and songwriter information are complete.
- Explicit, clean, instrumental, remix, and live labels are accurate.
- Samples, beats, covers, features, and AI-related permissions are documented.
- ISRC and UPC/EAN information is correct where applicable.
- Spotify is selected as a destination.
- Release is submitted well before the target date.
- Correct Spotify artist profile link or URI is supplied when supported.
- Spotify for Artists access is claimed.
- One unreleased song is pitched at least seven days before release if appropriate.
- No service promising guaranteed streams or guaranteed editorial placement has been hired.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming Spotify for Artists is an upload portal.
- Uploading a rough or incorrect master.
- Using copyrighted artwork or uncleared samples.
- Assuming a purchased or leased beat has unlimited streaming rights.
- Choosing an artist name without checking for profile collisions.
- Submitting immediately before release day.
- Re-uploading instead of requesting a correction.
- Calling a free plan equivalent to keeping 100% of royalties.
- Believing seven-day playlist-pitching eligibility guarantees publication or placement.
- Paying for guaranteed streams.
- Assuming distribution automatically handles publishing registration.
Frequently asked questions
Can I upload to Spotify without a distributor?
For an ordinary public music release, Spotify’s current standard route is through a distributor or label. Local Files are private playback, not public distribution.
Is Spotify for Artists free?
Yes. Spotify says Spotify for Artists is free to join. A distributor may still charge for delivering your music.
Can I upload only one song?
Yes. Distributors commonly support singles as well as albums and EPs. Compare pay-per-release and subscription pricing for your release frequency.

Do I need a record label?
No. Independent artists can distribute music and claim Spotify for Artists without a label. If you are signed, check whether your label controls delivery.
Can I upload a cover song?
Yes, where the necessary cover license is available and covers your intended territories. A new recording of someone else’s composition is not automatically cleared.
Can I use an instrumental beat?
Only if your license permits the intended Spotify distribution, monetization, stream volume, and any content-identification uses. Read the beat agreement.
Can I change a song after release?
Ask the distributor about metadata corrections, replacements, and re-delivery. Preserve the original ISRC where allowed for the same recording; do not create a duplicate release unnecessarily.
Can I remove my music later?
Usually, you request a takedown through the distributor. Check the provider’s terms for timing, catalog availability after cancellation, and whether re-delivery or updates cost extra.
How do Spotify royalties work?
There is no universal fixed per-stream rate. Payments depend on the royalty system, rights ownership, and your distributor or label agreement. Separate publishing and other rights income may require separate registration.
Can I upload a podcast instead?
Podcasts use a separate Spotify podcast-hosting workflow. It is not the same as distributing music through a music distributor.
