Sometimes—but not universally. Twitch’s current public settings documentation does not list a general account-wide switch that hides the channel you are watching. If your account still shows an activity-sharing or status-privacy option, disable it. If it does not, the most reliable fallback is to watch without interacting, or watch while logged out when keeping the viewing session separate from your account matters.
First, decide what you want to hide
“Hide who I am watching” can mean several different things on Twitch:
- Hide your current channel from Twitch friends: this may be covered by an activity-sharing or status control if it appears on your account.
- Hide your identity from the streamer: passive viewing normally does not expose your username as an individual viewer.
- Hide your activity from a particular person: blocking helps with contact and harassment, but Twitch does not document it as a complete viewing-privacy solution.
- Hide followed channels or recommendations: these are separate from your current viewing session and watch history.
- Hide activity from someone using the same device: browser history, open tabs, saved sessions, and recommendations require local-device precautions.
Check Twitch for an activity-sharing control
Twitch historically offered activity sharing with friends. In Twitch’s 2016 announcement, users could hide activity by selecting their own status under their username. However, Twitch’s current public Account Settings documentation does not list a universal setting specifically for hiding the channel you are watching. The old control may not be available to every account or may use different labels now.
Check for it before relying on workarounds:
- Sign in to Twitch on the website.
- Select your profile picture.
- Open Settings, then inspect Security & Privacy and the profile or status menu.
- Look for wording such as Share activity, Show what I’m watching, Hide activity, or Invisible.
- Disable activity sharing or choose the least-visible status available.
The exact label and location can vary by account, region, and interface version. If possible, check the result from a separate account or ask a trusted person to verify whether your activity is still visible. Turning the control off should prevent the activity signal covered by that setting from being shared, but it cannot erase activity someone has already seen.

On mobile, open your profile and account settings and look for the same activity or status option. Twitch has changed its mobile navigation over time, so the web interface may be easier to check if the control is not obvious. Availability and menu names can differ by app version.
If the activity option is missing
If you cannot find an activity-sharing control, Twitch currently provides no clearly documented setting that guarantees the channel you are watching is hidden from everyone. Use the following practical precautions:
- Watch without chatting or sending whispers.
- Do not follow, subscribe, cheer, gift, raid, redeem public channel points, answer predictions or polls, or otherwise interact with the channel.
- Avoid creating clips or sharing screenshots that reveal your username or account activity.
- For viewing that should not be connected to your main account, use a logged-out browser window.
Logged-out viewing reduces account attribution because there is no logged-in Twitch username participating in the session. It also removes or limits personalized features, following, subscriptions, and other account functions. It does not make the activity invisible to Twitch or to the network and website infrastructure handling the session.

Can streamers see that I am watching?
Usually, a streamer cannot identify you merely because you opened the stream and remained silent. The streamer receives an aggregate viewer count, not a reliable, supported list of every passive viewer. A Twitch developer discussion also states that there is no supported way to determine whether a particular user is watching a particular stream: Twitch’s developer forum discussion.
Your account becomes much easier to associate with the channel when you:
- post in chat or send a whisper;
- follow or subscribe;
- cheer, gift, raid, or redeem an account-linked reward;
- take part in predictions, polls, or other visible channel interactions;
- create a clip or share an image showing your username.
A streamer or moderator may also infer that someone is watching from public interactions, extensions, integrations, shared screenshots, or other clues. “Not individually listed as a viewer” is therefore not the same as guaranteed anonymity.

Does blocking someone hide your viewing activity?
No verified conclusion supports using blocking for that purpose. Twitch documents blocking as a way to limit unwanted contact and certain interactions, including follows, whispers, gifts, recommendations, and some chat visibility. Its harassment and blocking documentation does not say that blocking hides every channel you watch from the blocked person.

Following, recommendations, and viewing history are different
Following a channel is not the same as watching it. Twitch’s documentation does not establish a universal public toggle that makes every following list private, so do not assume that a following list is either always public or always private on every account.

Your own Following drawer is a personalized navigation feature. Twitch may also personalize recommendations using factors such as watch history, engagement, region, language, device, and login state. That internal personalization does not necessarily mean friends can see a live activity feed.
If you simply want to stop seeing a channel in recommendations, use Not Interested where available or block the channel. Twitch describes these as recommendation and content-control tools—not as ways to hide your identity while watching. See Twitch’s recommendation controls.
Privacy trade-offs of common workarounds

Incognito mode, VPNs, and alternate accounts
Private or incognito browsing
Private browsing mainly prevents the browser from retaining ordinary local history, cookies, and session data after the window closes. It does not make a logged-in Twitch account anonymous and does not hide activity from Twitch.

VPNs
A VPN changes the apparent network location, but it does not hide a logged-in Twitch identity from Twitch. It can also trigger additional login or account-security checks. It is not a substitute for a Twitch privacy setting.
Alternate accounts
A separate account can keep activity away from your primary username, but it creates another identifiable account. Chatting, following, subscribing, or interacting through it can still associate that account with the channel.
Important edge cases
- Chat lurking: remaining silent makes you less identifiable, but it is not a promise of perfect anonymity.
- Extensions: Twitch says extensions are commonly created by third parties and may have their own data practices. Be cautious with extensions that request account access or claim to reveal hidden viewers; see Twitch’s extension guidance.
- Moderators: moderators can manage chat participants and moderation-related information, but that does not mean they can reliably identify every passive viewer.
- Drops and integrations: third-party integrations may process limited viewing-related information when you opt into the relevant system.
- Shared devices: another person may see open tabs, browser history, saved sessions, or recommendations even when Twitch does not publicly show your activity.
Bottom line
Start by checking your profile, status, and Settings → Security & Privacy areas for an activity-sharing or visibility control. If it exists, disable it—but do not treat it as a way to erase public interactions or Twitch’s internal processing of viewing activity. If it is absent, the safest practical approach is to watch without interacting, and to use logged-out viewing when you need the session separated from your main account.
