Short answer: Kodi usually does not work like YouTube or Netflix with a native Google Cast button. For regular viewing, install Kodi directly on a compatible Google TV or Android TV device. For a quick workaround, mirror Kodi from an Android phone; for a computer, HDMI is usually the simplest and most reliable connection. UPnP/DLNA can also send compatible network media to a supported TV or player.
“Casting” can mean several different things, and the right method depends on whether you want Kodi itself on the TV, your whole phone screen on the TV, or just a media file played by a network device.
Casting, mirroring, and running Kodi on the TV are different

Google’s standard Cast instructions describe casting from apps that support Google Cast. Kodi is not generally a Google Cast-enabled sender app, so do not expect a native Cast button in Kodi. If your TV or streaming device runs a compatible Android TV or Google TV system, installing Kodi on that device is usually more convenient than keeping a phone connected and mirrored. The app must be available for the particular device and region; “smart TV” alone does not guarantee compatibility. Many smart TVs use operating systems that do not offer Kodi.

- Connect the Google TV or Android TV device to the television over HDMI and connect it to the internet.
- Open the device’s app store and search for Kodi.
- Check the publisher, then install the official Kodi app if it is available for your device.
- Launch Kodi, complete its initial setup, and add your legitimate local, network, or authorized media sources.
- Use the TV remote for normal navigation. A phone can also control Kodi using an official Kodi remote app.
Availability can vary by device, country, operating-system edition, and Kodi release. If the app is not offered in your device’s store, check Kodi’s Android download page and official downloads for supported options. Kodi recommends its own download area and official mirrors; avoid unofficial “fully loaded” bundles.
A Google TV Streamer or another Google TV device can run apps, but that does not make every app a native Cast sender. If considering hardware, verify current Kodi availability and specifications for the exact model. Google lists the Google TV Streamer’s features on its product page; those specifications do not establish that Kodi has a Cast button.
Mirror Kodi from an Android phone to Chromecast
Android screen mirroring is a practical workaround when Kodi is on a phone or tablet and the TV has a Chromecast, Google TV Streamer, or built-in Google Cast. It mirrors the whole Android display rather than sending Kodi playback through a native Cast integration.

- Connect the phone and Chromecast or Cast-enabled TV to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open Google Home, or open the phone’s system controls and look for a label such as Cast, Screen Cast, Screen Mirroring, Smart View, or Wireless Display. Labels vary by manufacturer.
- Select the TV or Chromecast and approve the connection.
- Open Kodi on the phone and start playback.
- When finished, stop mirroring from the same Cast or screen-mirroring control.
Google’s general Cast guidance lists Android 6.0 or later and iOS 12 or later among its mobile baselines, and says the source and receiver normally need to be on the same Wi-Fi network. These requirements do not guarantee that Kodi itself supports native casting. See Google’s current Cast requirements
Because the entire screen is mirrored, notifications and other on-screen activity may appear on the TV. The phone stays involved in playback, and performance can depend on Wi-Fi quality, phone capability, app behavior, and the content. Lag, battery use, stuttering, or audio/video sync problems are possible.
If the Chromecast does not appear
- Confirm the phone and receiver are on the same network, not a guest network or separated networks that block device discovery.
- Temporarily turn off a VPN and check whether a firewall or router setting is blocking local-device discovery.
- Check that Google Home has any permissions it requests.
- Restart Kodi, the phone, the receiver, and—if needed—the router.
- On iOS or macOS, allow Local Network access for Cast discovery. Google notes that this permission is required on iOS 14 or later and macOS 15 or later.
- If an Android phone keeps switching networks, Google suggests checking network isolation and, where applicable, temporarily disabling Adaptive Connectivity so the phone remains on the Chromecast’s network.
iPhone and iPad: do not count on Kodi mirroring over AirPlay
Google Cast discovery on iOS requires Local Network permission on current iOS versions, but that only concerns discovering Cast devices; it does not add a Cast button to Kodi. Kodi’s wiki describes limited AirPlay support, says AirPlay mirroring is unsupported, and notes that DRM-protected video may not play. Its AirPlay page was last updated in 2020, so treat it as Kodi’s documented limitation rather than a guarantee about every current device combination. Kodi’s AirPlay documentation

For iPhone or iPad users, the more dependable choices are to install Kodi directly on a compatible TV device, use a supported wired adapter and HDMI connection where available, or play the media through an app or server supported by the TV. Do not assume that an Apple TV or an iPhone’s AirPlay controls will mirror Kodi video successfully.

Use UPnP/DLNA to play network media
Kodi can share its library as a UPnP server, browse another UPnP server as a client, or act as a control point to tell a compatible network player to play selected media. This is network media playback, not a transfer of Kodi’s full interface to the television.
- In Kodi, open Settings → Services → UPnP / DLNA.
- Enable the server or control options you need. UPnP is disabled by default.
- On the TV or player, browse for available UPnP/DLNA servers; or browse content in Kodi, open its context menu, choose Play with…, and select the compatible player.
Menu wording can differ across Kodi versions. The receiver must support the relevant UPnP/DLNA profile and the file’s codecs. The TV may see a server but still be unable to play a particular file. Kodi notes that UPnP browsing does not create a full Kodi library and metadata experience on the client. Use HDMI from a computer
If Kodi is running on a laptop or desktop, a direct HDMI connection is often the least complicated option:
- Connect the computer to the TV with an HDMI cable.
- Select the matching HDMI input on the TV.
- In the computer’s display settings, choose duplicate or extend as needed.
- Open Kodi and switch it to full screen.
- If sound still comes from the computer, select the TV or HDMI output in the computer’s audio settings.
HDMI requires no Cast support and avoids Wi-Fi discovery problems. The computer must stay connected and powered, and a cable is less convenient than a dedicated TV box. A wireless keyboard, remote, or official Kodi remote app can make navigation easier.

There is no Cast button in Kodi
That is expected in the ordinary Google Cast workflow: Kodi is not generally a Cast-enabled sender app. Choose Android screen mirroring, direct installation on the TV device, UPnP/DLNA, or HDMI instead.

The TV appears, but video is black or only audio plays
Possible causes include DRM restrictions, an unsupported codec or container, a hardware-decoding issue, mirroring limits, or an HDMI/HDCP negotiation problem. Try a known local, non-DRM file to help separate a content restriction from a general connection problem. If one file fails while another plays, the receiver may not support that file’s format. There is no universal fix.
Playback stutters or buffers
- Test a local file rather than an internet stream.
- If mirroring, test direct Kodi playback on the TV device instead.
- Move devices closer to the router or use Ethernet if the receiver supports it.
- Try a lower resolution or bitrate and temporarily disable a VPN.
- Restart the network equipment if discovery or playback remains unreliable.
Ethernet can improve network reliability in some setups, but it does not guarantee that a particular stream or file will play smoothly.
Kodi stops when the phone screen locks
Some phones restrict mirroring when the display sleeps or battery-saving features activate. Keep the phone awake during playback and check its battery settings. If that is inconvenient, use direct installation, DLNA, or HDMI instead.

The TV sees a DLNA server but cannot play the file
This usually points to receiver profile or codec compatibility, not necessarily a broken Kodi connection. Test another file or a more widely supported format. If the player and server support transcoding, that may help; otherwise, direct Kodi installation or HDMI may be simpler.

Kodi is a media-player application; whether particular playback is lawful depends on the source, your rights, and local law. Use official Kodi downloads and media you are authorized to access.
