How Charli XCX Wrote *Brat*: The Concept-First Process Behind the Album

Charli XCX chose Brat’s title and concept before the music, then turned fast collaborative sketches into songs through iterative work on lyrics, melodies, structure, and production.

Charli XCX built Brat from a creative brief outward: she chose its title and considered its presentation before making the music, then used that concept to guide fast, collaborative sessions and later refinement. The result joined experimental, club-facing production with pop songwriting and lyrics that could be blunt, uncertain, or grieving.

Charli began with the album’s concept, not a finished set of songs

Charli said she was thinking about the album’s marketing and presentation before making its music. She had the title first, and described it as a useful writing brief: a constraint that could help focus what the sessions produced. She also brought a written manifesto to her label to communicate the project’s direction. In her Variety Australia interview, she put it this way: “I was thinking about marketing before I was making the music. I had the title first, which was such a brief and a super-useful writing tool.”

That does not mean a marketing plan alone made the album. The concept gave Charli and her collaborators a shared frame for decisions about sound, writing, and presentation. In the GRAMMY.com producer roundtable, Charli described “brat” as someone messy, blunt, self-confident, and sometimes volatile—someone who might have a breakdown and keep partying. That is her description of the album’s persona, not a universal definition of the word.

Fast first drafts gave way to detailed revision

Build an idea quickly

Producer Finn Keane described sessions that could move rapidly from a musical idea to a rough song. In the initial phase, he said, a track might take 10 or 15 minutes to make; Charli would record many vocal passes, which the team edited and rearranged. They might have something resembling a song in about 30 minutes. Those timings describe Keane’s account of this team’s workflow, not a formula or a deadline for songwriting.

Keep shaping the song after the first pass

The quick draft was a starting point. Charli worked on lyrics, melody, and structure, while the producers continued developing the music. Keane described the group’s creative aim as making dance music that was strange and experimental but still had a recognizable pop song at its center. As he put it to GRAMMY.com: “How do you make strange dance music that’s experimental and weird, but at the core there’s still a mutant song in there?”

“Sympathy Is a Knife” shows how sketches met Charli’s direction

Songwriter and producer Jon Shave recalled that he and Keane brought rough musical ideas to an early 2023 session with Charli. One sketch became “So I”; another developed into “Sympathy Is a Knife.” Shave said Charli already had the album concept and title, a curated playlist of references, and ideas for every song she wanted to make. His account, published by MusicRadar on April 19, 2025, describes the song’s development as a back-and-forth: the collaborators worked out the arrangement, set an early version aside while they made other material, then returned to refine the lyrics and vocals before Keane finished the production.

The example makes the process concrete: the producers’ sketches supplied musical starting points, while Charli’s prepared concept and song ideas helped direct what those sketches became. It was neither a wholly prewritten album nor a case of producers handing Charli finished tracks.

Club energy and vulnerable writing share the same album

Brat does not hold dance-floor energy and personal uncertainty apart. Apple Music’s editorial notes describe the album’s club setting while identifying grief for SOPHIE in “So I” and complicated connection in “Girl, so confusing.” TIME likewise characterized the record as both confrontational and vulnerable in its June 2024 coverage. That range fits the album’s stated persona: confidence and messiness can coexist, rather than one cancelling out the other.

Release and chart context

Brat was released by Atlantic Records on June 7, 2024. Apple Music’s album listing gives it 15 songs and a 41-minute runtime. These details establish the scope of the original album; they do not explain the writing process by themselves.

In the UK, the Official Charts Company records an album-chart debut at No. 2, while the later remix project reached No. 1. Those are UK chart positions, not global sales figures. TIME reported in June 2024 that the original album debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and had a 95/100 Metacritic score at that time; the score is a dated review snapshot, not a permanent rating. The documented creative process is the more revealing explanation of how the album took shape: concept and title first, rapid collaborative drafts, then focused revision.
