1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBitrate is the amount of encoded data sent each second. With resolution, frame rate, codec, encoder and footage held constant, more bitrate generally gives an encoder more room to preserve detail and reduce compression artifacts. But bitrate is not a quality score: the result also depends on motion, encoder capacity, connection stability, platform limits and what viewers can receive.
What bitrate changes in a live stream
Every second of video has to be represented by a finite amount of encoded data. A higher bitrate gives the encoder a larger budget for that second; if the picture is complex, the encoder can use that extra capacity to retain more detail instead of compressing it as heavily.
When the available bitrate is too low for the picture, viewers may see blockiness, smearing, or detail that disappears during movement. A quiet shot with little changing detail can look clean at a bitrate that makes a fast-moving or finely textured scene look rough.
There is no universal formula for how much perceived quality one added megabit per second buys. Published platform recommendations are settings guidance, not measurements of viewer-perceived improvement.

Why bitrate alone does not determine quality
Motion and fine detail
Fast movement, foliage, water, confetti, film grain and other fine or changing textures are harder to compress than a mostly static presenter shot. At the same bitrate, such footage can show more artifacts because the encoder has more visual information to represent.
Resolution and frame rate
Higher resolution means more pixels to encode; higher frame rate means more frames each second. Both increase the workload. If bitrate is fixed, a lower resolution or frame rate can leave more data available per pixel or frame, though the picture will have fewer pixels or less temporal smoothness.

Codec and encoder capacity
Codecs differ in efficiency, so a supported, more efficient codec may produce better-looking video at the same bandwidth. Compatibility with the streaming platform and encoder matters. The encoder also needs enough processing capacity: if it is overloaded, it can skip or distort frames even when the bitrate is sufficient.
Connection and viewer conditions
The upload connection must sustain the video bitrate alongside audio and other network traffic. A stream can look good at the encoder but still suffer interruptions if the connection is unstable. Viewers’ available bandwidth and the platform’s delivery options also affect what they can watch. YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats; do not assume every platform offers viewers the same quality choices.

What bitrate should you use for a live stream?
Start with the destination platform’s current ingest guidance for your codec, resolution and frame rate. For YouTube, its live encoder settings page gives the following recommendations, accessed in 2026. These figures are YouTube ingest settings, not universal targets for every platform or encoder:
| YouTube output and codec | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p, 30 fps, H.264 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps, H.264 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps, AV1 or H.265 | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps, AV1 or H.265 | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
YouTube also recommends CBR, a 2-second keyframe frequency, and RTMP/RTMPS settings for its listed workflow. Check its current table and codec support before configuring a stream: YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

For a separate point of reference, OBS Project’s x264 chart gives 5,000–8,000 kbps as a 1080p/30 fps starting range with x264 veryfast, assuming low-to-medium motion. OBS says high-motion 1080p/60 fps video may need more than 8,000 kbps with that encoder preset for smooth playback. These are contextual OBS examples, not YouTube’s recommendations or limits. See OBS Project: Streaming with x264.
How to choose settings for your stream
- Check the destination’s current ingest table. Confirm the supported codec and recommended bitrate for the resolution and frame rate you plan to send. Platform guidance can change; use the current table rather than assuming one number applies everywhere.
- Measure upload speed under realistic conditions. YouTube recommends running a speed test to check upload bitrate. Leave capacity for audio, other network activity and normal variation instead of setting the stream equal to your full measured upload speed. NVIDIA’s vendor guidance suggests using around 75% of measured upload speed as a starting point; it is not a guarantee or a universal rule.
- Match resolution and frame rate to the available budget. Choose the detail and motion smoothness that matter for your content and bandwidth. When the bitrate is constrained, reducing resolution or frame rate can help avoid forcing the encoder to compress too much.
- Set the codec and encoder within their limits. Use a codec the platform supports. Select an encoder configuration your computer can sustain; a theoretically efficient setting is not useful if it overloads the hardware.
- Test representative footage and watch stream health. Include both motion and audio in the test. Check the platform’s stream-health indicators before and during the live event, and look for skipped frames or encoding overload in your encoder.
For broader trade-offs, OBS explains how x264’s bitrate, quality and CPU use interact in its streaming guide. NVIDIA’s recommendations, including its advice to lower resolution for high-motion scenes when bitrate is limited, are vendor guidance rather than a universal perceptual rule: NVIDIA broadcasting guide.

Should you lower resolution or increase bitrate?
If your upload connection has reliable spare capacity and the platform accepts a higher bitrate, raising bitrate may reduce compression artifacts while preserving your current resolution and frame rate. If the connection is already near its stable limit, a higher setting can make delivery less reliable. In that case, reduce resolution or frame rate, or use a more efficient supported codec if your encoder and platform both allow it.
For high-motion material with limited bitrate, lowering resolution is one option NVIDIA specifically recommends. There is no universally correct choice between resolution and frame rate: decide based on the content, delivery budget and viewer needs, then inspect a representative test.
Why does a stream look blurry or blocky when things move?
Movement and fine detail raise the amount of information the encoder must represent. If the bitrate does not rise to meet that demand, or the encoder cannot process the video efficiently, compression becomes more visible during complex scenes. This is why a static opening slate may look sharp while action footage at the same settings looks smeared or blocky.
- If the connection has stable spare capacity, test a higher bitrate within the platform’s guidance.
- If bandwidth is the constraint, lower the output resolution or frame rate and compare the result.
- If the encoder reports overload or output skips, reduce resolution or frame rate, then adjust the encoder preset to fit the available hardware.
- Test the actual codec, content and upload conditions you will use live; a brief static preview may not reveal problems in action scenes.
Troubleshooting bitrate and stream quality
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Blocky or smeared picture during movement | Complex motion or detail exceeds the available encoding budget. | Test a higher bitrate if the connection and platform allow it; otherwise reduce resolution or frame rate and compare representative action footage. |
| Stream disconnects or delivery becomes unstable after raising bitrate | The upload connection may not sustain the setting alongside other traffic. | Run an upload speed test under realistic conditions, leave headroom, and try a lower bitrate. |
| Skipped or distorted output with encoding-overload warnings | The encoder may exceed available hardware capacity. | Reduce resolution or frame rate, then adjust the encoder preset as needed. Test before going live again. |
| Settings appear acceptable but quality remains poor | The selected codec, platform guidance, content complexity or viewer delivery conditions may not match expectations. | Recheck the destination’s current ingest table and supported codec, then test a representative segment and monitor stream health. |
Does a higher bitrate make a stream look better?
It can, if bitrate is the limiting factor and the encoder, connection and platform can handle the increase. It does not automatically improve quality: if the image is already well represented, the encoder is overloaded, or the connection becomes unstable, adding bitrate may not help and can make the stream less reliable. On Twitch, official guidance likewise says bitrate helps only up to a point and that higher resolution or frame rate requires more bitrate and encoding capacity. Check Twitch’s current guidance before using a specific limit: Twitch broadcasting guidelines.
