Ads on a 24/7 YouTube live stream use YouTube’s standard live-stream monetization controls: once an eligible channel enables monetization for the stream, pre-roll and display ads are switched on, while mid-roll ads can be automatic, scheduled, or inserted manually. Running all day does not guarantee a fixed number of ads, continuous ad playback, or the same timing for every viewer.
What has to be enabled before a live stream can show ads?
The channel must be monetized, and monetization must be enabled for the live stream in YouTube Studio. Watch Page ads and YouTube Premium revenue for long-form or live-stream videos also require acceptance of YouTube’s Watch Page Monetization Module. Turning monetization on makes a stream eligible for ads; it does not guarantee that an ad will serve at every opportunity.
YouTube describes its regular live-stream ad workflow, not a separate ad system for broadcasts that run around the clock. A continuous schedule therefore does not create a guaranteed hourly ad count.
Which ad types can appear?
Pre-roll and display ads
YouTube says pre-roll and display ads are automatically turned on when live-stream monetization is enabled. Their availability and delivery still depend on YouTube’s ad decisions and the viewer’s circumstances.

Mid-roll ads
Mid-roll ads can interrupt a live stream. You can let YouTube place them automatically, set a target interval, or insert breaks manually. An ad slot is only an opportunity: YouTube states, “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.” If no ad is served, that viewer continues watching the stream; if one is served, the viewer returns when it ends or they skip it.
How should you choose a mid-roll setting?

Consider the content as well as the setting. Mid-rolls may not suit every format; YouTube’s long-video guidance gives meditation videos as an example of content where interruptions may be inappropriate. That is a content-fit caution, not a special rule for 24/7 streams.

How to set up live-stream ads in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, open Go live and start or schedule the stream.
- Open Edit → Monetization and confirm monetization is on. The channel must be monetized, and the Watch Page Monetization Module must be accepted for Watch Page ads and YouTube Premium revenue from long-form or live-stream videos.
- Choose automatic, scheduled, or manual mid-rolls. For scheduled breaks, select one of YouTube’s documented target intervals: 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes.
- If you use automatic mid-rolls, use Delay ads in the Live Control Room to delay them for 10 minutes during an important moment. A countdown appears before ads resume. Manually placed mid-rolls still display while the delay is active.
- To take a temporary break, configure a break overlay and start Take a Break for 1, 3, or 5 minutes. Eligible viewers may see ads during the break; otherwise they see the away slate. The countdown reaching zero does not end the break automatically—you must end it in the Live Control Room.
- Review live-stream and replay ad revenue in YouTube Analytics using the Live filter.
YouTube also names an Elgato Stream Deck plugin as an optional way to insert ads. It is not required: manual insertion is available in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s help does not identify a specific compatible Stream Deck model, so check current plugin compatibility before choosing hardware.
Why ad timing differs between viewers
YouTube decides whether an eligible slot serves an ad based on multiple factors, so some viewers may see an ad while others continue watching. Automatic mid-rolls aim for natural breakpoints and are not necessarily synchronized across the audience. YouTube says side-by-side mid-rolls can appear automatically on eligible streams, but streams with captions turned on will not show that format. Neither format is guaranteed for every stream or viewer.

Ads are turned off for a live stream when its player is embedded on an external site with auto-start. This may matter if the stream is also embedded outside YouTube.
What can limit or prevent ad revenue?
- Age-restricted content may be ineligible for monetization.
- Content that does not comply with advertiser-friendly guidelines may receive limited or no ads.
- Advertisers may avoid content they consider misaligned with their brand.
- Enabling monetization does not guarantee that an ad will fill a slot or that every stream topic will be fully monetized.
What YouTube’s reported revenue figure means
YouTube Help reports that creators who turned on live automatic mid-rolls saw an average uplift of over 20% in in-stream ad revenue per hour compared with channels that did not, averaged across 207 countries. The measurement is identified as January 2024. It is a group comparison, not a forecast or guaranteed improvement for an individual channel.
