The dragon pursues Addam and appears to choose him; the episode does not establish exactly why.
How does Seasmoke choose Addam?
In “Smallfolk,” Seasmoke corners Addam of Hull. The encounter is presented as the dragon seeking him out and accepting him—not as Rhaenyra successfully assigning Addam to Seasmoke. Sky’s episode explainer also describes a message reaching Dragonstone that Seasmoke now has a rider. Recaps by The Guardian and The Washington Post cover the episode’s pivotal pairing.

Who is Addam of Hull?
Addam is Alyn of Hull’s brother. Episode coverage connects both men to Corlys Velaryon; TIME discusses their family background and their place in the story in its account of Addam and Alyn.
Why does Seasmoke choose Addam?
The episode shows Seasmoke pursuing Addam, but does not give a definitive explanation for the dragon’s choice. The question stands out because Seasmoke was previously associated with Laenor Velaryon. Addam’s family relationship to Laenor, resemblance, or other possible connections may prompt interpretation, but the episode does not confirm any of these as the reason. The Ringer considers the question of whether Addam’s relation to Laenor explains the pairing in its episode-six mailbag; that possibility remains interpretation, not established fact.
