House of Guinness is inspired by the real Guinness family, but it is a fictionalized historical drama—not a documentary or a purely factual account. Its family-tree core is Sir Benjamin Guinness and four adult children: Arthur, Edward, Anne and Benjamin (“Ben”). Netflix’s character guide connects each sibling to a historical family member, while the series invents or reshapes some relationships and events.

The family relationships in the table are the series’ character-guide framing, not a complete independently verified genealogy. Netflix describes the programme as a story about Benjamin’s adult children and the brewery they inherit (Netflix Tudum cast guide; Netflix Media Center synopsis).
Where Sean Rafferty fits—and where he doesn’t
Sean Rafferty, played by James Norton, is an ally and fixer in the series. Netflix’s cast guide establishes his role in the drama, but the available historical evidence here does not establish him as a member of the Guinness family. Treat his specific ties, exploits and alliances as part of the show unless supported by separate historical documentation.

Is House of Guinness a true story?
It is based on real people and a real family, but it is not presented as a fully factual account. Creator Steven Knight described using the family’s documented achievements and mistakes as “stepping stones” to fill historical gaps (Netflix Tudum, October 23, 2025). Edward Guinness, 4th Earl of Iveagh—a descendant of one of the people portrayed—told The Irish Times that the series “makes no ambition at relating to purely fact.” He said the siblings receive greater emphasis than they did in real life, while judging the portrayal of his ancestor Edward largely faithful. His comments are an informed family descendant’s assessment, not a scene-by-scene verification (The Irish Times, October 1, 2025).
Examples of drama versus the historical record
The funeral and the Fenians
The series depicts a riot around Sir Benjamin’s coffin. The Irish Times reported historian Kevin Egan’s view that the Fenians were no longer an active force in Irish life at that point and that the funeral was sombre. The paper also notes that anti-brewing temperance sentiment was real. These are the historian’s assessments as reported by the paper; they should not be stretched into a verdict on every scene or the wider political context.

Edward and Ellen Cochrane
TIME reports no proof of the affair between Edward and Ellen Cochrane shown in the series. Knight told TIME, “It’s a fiction that I’ve invented, but no one can prove he didn’t.” The scene is therefore a dramatic invention, not an established historical romance (TIME, September 25, 2025).
Arthur’s assassination cliffhanger
The attempted assassination in the series is not a documented event from the real Arthur’s life. TIME reports that Arthur lived through the period, represented brewery interests in Parliament for a year, and died in 1915.

Political and religious context
TIME describes the Guinness family as Protestant, with political loyalties aligned with the union and the British crown, amid Catholic-Protestant tensions and Fenian activity. That broader setting matters: the show’s stylized conflicts should not be mistaken for a complete account of Irish politics or for proof that every character’s political action happened as depicted.
What the show establishes about the family—and what it leaves open
The most dependable starting point for following the drama is the central relationship: Sir Benjamin’s four children are the family-tree core, and each is tied by Netflix to a real Guinness family member. That connection does not make every personality trait, romance, feud or plot event historical fact. The character guide itself frames the siblings through the series, while Knight’s account and the descendant’s comments make clear that the drama fills gaps rather than claiming pure factuality.

Netflix announced on August 24, 2026, that House of Guinness was renewed for Season 2. The announcement describes Season 1 as eight episodes and discusses the next chapter for Arthur, Edward, Anne, Benjamin and Sean Rafferty, but gives no Season 2 release date (Netflix Tudum, August 24, 2026). Streaming availability can vary by country.
