The real Cheryl Bradshaw declined her date with Rodney Alcala after choosing him on The Dating Game in 1978. What happened in her life after that is not reliably documented in the reporting available. The ending of Woman of the Hour, in which its fictionalized Bradshaw leaves Los Angeles, is not evidence of what the real Bradshaw did.
What Cheryl Bradshaw did after choosing Alcala
Bradshaw appeared as the bachelorette on The Dating Game in 1978 and selected Alcala, who won the date. According to contestant coordinator Ellen Metzger’s recollection, Bradshaw called the day after taping and said she did not want to go out with him. Metzger recalled Bradshaw saying, “I can’t go out with this guy. There’s weird vibes that are coming off of him, he’s very strange. I’m not comfortable going out with him. Is that going to be a problem?” Metzger told the Los Angeles Times she assured Bradshaw she was not required to go on the date.

That reported decision is the clearest account of what Bradshaw did immediately after the show. The sources reviewed do not establish her later whereabouts, work, relationships, or present status. TIME has said little is known about the real Bradshaw. This lack of public reporting does not establish that she moved away, went into hiding, or made any particular choice about her privacy.
What the film changes
Woman of the Hour is based on the 1978 television appearance, but it invents scenes and a fuller story for its character, Sheryl Bradshaw, played by Anna Kendrick. Netflix’s explainer describes the post-show encounter as dramatized. The film’s meeting between Sheryl and Alcala, the threatening parking-lot encounter, and Sheryl’s departure from Los Angeles are not established as events in the real Cheryl Bradshaw’s life.

The on-air scene is also altered. The Los Angeles Times reports that Alcala was Bachelor No. 1 in real life, while the film presents him as Bachelor No. 3. The dialogue and Bradshaw character are reworked as well. TIME reports Bradshaw asked Alcala, “I’m serving you for dinner. What are you called and what do you look like?” and that he replied, “I’m called the banana and I look good,” followed by “Peel me.” These are reported recollections, not presented here as a verified transcript.
Documented event versus film invention
| What is reported about the real Bradshaw | What belongs to the film’s dramatization |
|---|---|
| She selected Alcala on The Dating Game in 1978; he won the date. | The film changes his bachelor number from No. 1 to No. 3. |
| Metzger recalled that Bradshaw called the next day, felt uncomfortable, and declined to go out with him. | The post-show meeting, parking-lot threat, and Sheryl’s departure from Los Angeles are film scenes, not verified biography. |
| The available reporting does not establish Bradshaw’s later life. | The character’s ending cannot fill in the gaps in the real woman’s story. |
Why her later story remains unclear
Time Out reported that screenwriter Ian McDonald could not locate Bradshaw while developing the film. McDonald said he “sort of took that as a sign that she didn’t want this 15-minute encounter to define her life.” That is McDonald’s interpretation of an unsuccessful search; it does not show what Bradshaw wanted or what became of her. Time Out’s account, like the other reporting, supports a limited conclusion: her later biography is not established in the public accounts cited here.
