Erin Napier remembered her late friend Mandy Buchanan as “a real artist” in a Home Town episode featuring Buchanan’s paintings and her cousin’s home-renovation story. PEOPLE reported that Buchanan, a Laurel, Mississippi-based artist, died of cancer in November 2022.
Who was Mandy Buchanan?
Buchanan was an artist from Laurel, Mississippi, and a friend of Erin Napier. In PEOPLE’s March 2, 2024 report, Napier said she had loved Buchanan’s work throughout her life and had included her paintings in many of the homes renovated on Home Town.
Napier described her friend simply: “Mandy was a good friend of mine. She was a real artist.” The report says Buchanan died of cancer in November 2022.
What did Erin Napier say about her late friend?
As the episode showed Buchanan’s floral paintings, Napier told Suzie, Buchanan’s cousin, “Well, I’m excited to use your vast collection of Mandy’s work, no matter where it is.” The paintings were part of the family’s story, not merely design choices for the renovation.

PEOPLE also quoted an Instagram tribute Napier posted shortly after Buchanan’s death. Napier wrote: “She was effervescent. She bubbled and glowed. She and her joyful, energetic art were inseparable: she painted her plucky spirit into every piece.” In the same tribute, she reflected on Buchanan’s loss and the mark she left through her art, volunteer work, and the way she made people feel special.
How did Buchanan’s paintings connect to the Home Town renovation?
The PEOPLE report identifies the clients as Suzie, her husband Scott, and their son Seth. Suzie is Buchanan’s cousin. The family had inherited Suzie’s parents’ house next door and was considering whether to remain in its current home or put its renovation budget toward the inherited property.

Why was the episode especially emotional for Suzie?
Suzie was also mourning her mother, Nan, who PEOPLE reported died in January 2023, a few months after Buchanan. Suzie said, “In less than three months’ time, I’ve lost two of the most important people in my life.” She described being part of the show as something that helped her through that period.
