Liz Power attended the 2023 Indianapolis 500 while recovering from emergency spinal surgery and a severe infection. In a PEOPLE exclusive syndicated by Yahoo, she said the infection had reached her spinal column and that she “did almost die.” Will Power later described her as “very close to dying.” Those are the couple’s accounts of the crisis, not an independent medical determination.
What happened to Will Power’s wife?
Liz Power told PEOPLE that worsening back pain became extreme. At first, she thought she had tweaked her back, but her condition deteriorated: she could barely walk and her fever reached a reported 106 degrees. Will called 911. Liz recalled that she was delirious from the fever and did not remember much of the emergency.
Doctors found an infection in her spinal column, she said, and performed emergency spinal surgery. The PEOPLE exclusive does not identify the organism that caused the infection. Liz described the experience as “a very, very scary situation” and said, “I did almost die.”
How did Liz Power recover?
According to her account to PEOPLE, Liz received 12 weeks of antibiotics, including IV treatment through a peripherally inserted central catheter, or PICC. Her medical team advised her to avoid unnecessary in-person interactions while recovering. These are details of Liz’s reported treatment and circumstances, not general medical guidance.

A later account published by Hendrick Motorsports on October 13, 2023, described the illness as a Staph infection that had settled in her spine. It also said Rick Hendrick connected Will with doctors and specialists in North Carolina. Will credited Hendrick with putting him in touch with “the best doctors and the best people to take care of it.” The Staph identification comes from that later account; PEOPLE’s earlier exclusive did not name the organism.
Was Liz Power at the 2023 Indy 500?
Yes. Liz was still on a long road to recovery when she attended the 2023 Indianapolis 500. Will finished 23rd. He told PEOPLE that it was “just great having her come” and being able to see her when he returned to the bus and hotel after practice.

Her attendance mattered after the crisis had kept her away from Will’s races during recovery. The couple said family, friends and people in motorsports helped them through a frightening period.
Why did Will Power withdraw from the Rolex 24?
Will withdrew from the Rolex 24 at Daytona to be with Liz during the emergency. “Family comes first every time,” he told PEOPLE. His decision gave context to why having her at Indianapolis later that year was especially meaningful to him.

Where is Will Power racing now?
For current career context, INDYCAR’s January 29, 2026 profile says Power joined Andretti Global after 16 full seasons with Team Penske. The profile records 45 career wins and 71 poles, and notes his 2018 Indianapolis 500 victory. These are INDYCAR’s figures as of that profile.
