Diane Keaton gave more than one reason for wearing hats: she liked men’s hats because she could pull them down to hide her face, and British Vogue separately reported that she wore them because she did not like her hair. She also said she simply loved hats. Those explanations make her signature look personal and expressive—not the result of one definitive cause.
Keaton said hats gave her a way to hide her face
In a 2012 Los Angeles Times interview, Keaton explained why she liked men’s hats: “so you can pull them down over your head so you can hide your face, which is always my intention.” That is her clearest first-person explanation for one function a hat could serve: privacy.
Her remark describes a preference, not proof that every hat she wore had the same purpose. It does, however, help explain the appeal of hats with brims she could lower over her face.
British Vogue also connected hats to her feelings about her hair
British Vogue reports that Keaton wore hats because she did not like her hair. The publication’s account offers a separate, personal explanation alongside the privacy she described herself. It should be understood as Vogue’s report, not as a direct quotation from Keaton.

She loved hats and fashion in their own right
In a Vogue interview, Keaton said, “I love them—nothing’s changed, I still love them.” She estimated that she had “about 40 hats” and named “a plain black Baron bowler hat” as her favorite. The number was her estimate at the time of the interview, not a verified inventory.
Her affection for hats sat within a wider enthusiasm for clothes. “I love fashion; I’ve always loved it,” she told Vogue. She said she did not want to be flashy and liked black-and-white outfits because she could add a hat, coat, or wide belt. Those comments suggest the hats were not only a way to hide her face or address her hair; they were also part of a style she enjoyed shaping.

The hats belonged to a larger menswear-inspired look
Keaton’s signature wardrobe included black-and-white combinations, tailored suits, turtlenecks, vests, coats, and wide belts, as well as hats. A Vogue style retrospective links the bowler, tie, and tailored look with her role in Annie Hall. The film helped make that silhouette recognizable, but the available accounts do not establish that the screen wardrobe alone explains her off-screen choices.
Her hats could therefore work on several levels: they offered the privacy she described, suited her reported feelings about her hair, and completed outfits she liked. There is no single documented origin story that accounts for every hat.

What “one year before her death” does—and does not—establish
The “one year before death” wording in the headline should not be taken as evidence that Keaton explained her style in an interview exactly one year before she died. The cited Vogue interview provides her comments about hats and fashion, but the available publication information does not establish that timing.
