Bowen Yang’s final episode of Saturday Night Live aired December 20, 2025, midway through Season 51. He left after seven seasons as a cast member, following an earlier stint as an SNL writer.
When was Bowen Yang’s last SNL episode?
Yang’s last episode aired on December 20, 2025. Ariana Grande hosted, with Cher as the musical guest. The news of his planned departure was reported the previous day; Yang confirmed it in an Instagram post. The Associated Press reported on the farewell episode, and ABC News covered his departure and SNL tenure.
What does “seven seasons” mean?
The seven-season count refers to Yang’s time as an on-air cast member, not his full association with the show. He joined SNL as a writer in 2018, became a featured player in Season 45, and was promoted to the main cast in Season 47. His final episode came during Season 51.
- 2018: Joined SNL as a writer ahead of Season 44.
- Season 45: Began appearing on air as a featured player.
- Season 47: Joined the main cast.
- December 20, 2025: His final episode aired.
Yang received five Emmy nominations for his work on the show, according to AP. ABC specifies that four were acting nominations and one was for writing.

How did SNL say goodbye to Yang?
The farewell was woven into the episode’s closing sketch rather than delivered as a separate on-air announcement. Yang played an airport lounge employee retiring from his job, then sang “Please Come Home for Christmas” with Grande and Cher. He became emotional during the moment. Grande told him, “We love you so much,” according to AP.
Yang also marked the departure in an Instagram caption, thanking the people at the show: “i loved working at SNL, and most of all i loved the people. i was there at a time when many things in the world started to seem futile, but working at 30 rock taught me the value in showing up anyway when people make it worthwhile.”

Why did Bowen Yang leave SNL?
Yang has not described his departure as the result of a dispute or a specific outside opportunity. In a September 2025 interview reported by ABC, he said he and executive producer Lorne Michaels had discussed whether he had more to do, and that Michaels encouraged him to stay for Season 51.
In a January 2026 interview on Las Culturistas, Yang said he was glad he returned for the season and put his decision this way: “I have this very beautiful thing where I get to say that I stayed on exactly as long as I wanted to.” He also described the show’s unusually fast creative process: “You have an idea on Tuesday and it could be on TV Saturday. It doesn’t work like that anywhere else.” TheWrap covered the interview on January 7, 2026.
