Donald Sutherland’s best roles show an actor who could move from eccentric comedy to political menace, intimate vulnerability and quiet warmth. This is a considered, career-spanning selection—not a definitive ranking: TIME noted that choosing a single definitive Sutherland performance is impossible. The order weighs career significance, the performance’s distinctiveness and its place in his six-decade screen career.

1. Vernon Pinkley in The Dirty Dozen (1967)

Sutherland’s breakthrough came as Vernon Pinkley, one of the unruly prisoners recruited for a dangerous wartime mission. The Academy and the Associated Press both identify The Dirty Dozen as the role that brought him to notice. Pinkley is a supporting part, but it gives this list its starting point: the first glimpse of the character actor whose screen presence could make an unusual figure stick in the mind.

The Academy’s career timeline and the AP obituary both place the film at the beginning of his rise.

2. Hawkeye Pierce in M*A*S*H (1970)

Three years later, Sutherland took the lead as Hawkeye Pierce, a irreverent Army surgeon whose jokes and defiance give the film its comic charge. The Associated Press says M*A*S*H helped catapult him to stardom. The role also demonstrates a different scale from Pinkley: Sutherland carries a film while making its anti-authoritarian humor feel like a personality, not just a punchline.

The AP’s account of his career places M*A*S*H alongside another 1970 film, Kelly’s Heroes, underscoring how swiftly he moved between contrasting comic roles.

3. John Klute in Klute (1971)

In Alan J. Pakula’s suspense film, Sutherland plays the title character, a private investigator searching for a missing man. His performance is controlled and watchful, a quieter mode than the exuberant comedy of M*A*S*H. That restraint suits a story built around tension and uncertain motives. The Academy describes Klute as both a taut suspense thriller and a love story.

The Academy’s Sutherland timeline highlights the film among his defining screen work.

4. John Baxter in Don’t Look Now (1973)

As John Baxter, an Englishman grieving the death of his daughter, Sutherland anchors Nicolas Roeg’s unsettling story in recognizable sorrow. His performance lets grief and unease sit side by side, making the film’s disorienting turns feel personal rather than merely strange. It is among the strongest examples of his capacity for vulnerability without losing an edge of tension.

5. Homer Simpson in The Day of the Locust (1975)

Sutherland plays Homer Simpson—not the cartoon character—in John Schlesinger’s adaptation of Nathanael West’s novel. Homer is an awkward, lonely figure caught in a harsh portrait of Hollywood ambition and desperation. The role shows Sutherland’s gift for making discomfort compelling: he can be funny, but the comedy never erases the character’s sadness.

The Academy and the Festival de Cannes both name The Day of the Locust among his notable films.

6. Oddball in Kelly’s Heroes (1970)

Oddball is a tank commander in a wartime caper, but Sutherland plays him less as a conventional soldier than as an easygoing eccentric. Set beside Hawkeye Pierce, the character makes a useful contrast: both roles are funny and anti-establishment, but Oddball’s laid-back, offbeat manner has a very different rhythm from Hawkeye’s sharp, provocative wit.

Cannes includes Kelly’s Heroes in its selection of Sutherland’s films, while the AP notes that it arrived in the same year as M*A*S*H (Cannes biography; AP obituary).

7. Calvin Jarrett in Ordinary People (1980)

In Robert Redford’s family drama, Sutherland plays Calvin Jarrett, a father trying to hold his family together after a devastating loss. His understated performance gives the film a steady emotional center. Rather than announce every feeling, he conveys the strain of listening, caring and trying to reach a son who has withdrawn.

The Academy lists Ordinary People among Sutherland’s major films (career timeline).

8. X in JFK (1991)

Sutherland’s appearance as X in Oliver Stone’s political thriller is brief, but memorable. The character delivers an extended account of the forces and motives that might lie behind President Kennedy’s assassination. In a film built around competing explanations, Sutherland gives the scene the gravity of a man laying out a theory with conviction. The role is a strong example of how he could command attention without carrying the whole film.

9. Mr. Bennet in Pride and Prejudice (2005)

In Joe Wright’s adaptation of Jane Austen, Sutherland plays Mr. Bennet as a father whose dry amusement is softened by real affection for his daughters. TIME singled out the joyful quality of this performance, a welcome reminder that Sutherland’s late-career work was not defined only by menace or authority. His warmth gives the family scenes room to breathe.

TIME’s remembrance specifically praises his performance as Mr. Bennet.

10. President Snow in The Hunger Games series (2012–2015)

As President Snow, the polished and calculating ruler of Panem, Sutherland brought quiet menace to a major franchise. Snow is not a one-film appearance: Sutherland played him in The Hunger Games (2012), Catching Fire (2013), Mockingjay – Part 1 (2014) and Mockingjay – Part 2 (2015). Across the series, the role gave younger audiences a sustained encounter with his ability to make power feel composed, personal and threatening.

The Academy’s timeline records Sutherland’s interest in the first film’s political potential. He said he had not heard of the books before reading the project, then described it as “something” that could become “a creative political stimulus for young people” (Academy timeline). The Television Academy also notes his work in The Hunger Games series (biography).

What these roles reveal about Sutherland’s range

These ten performances are not a claim that the other films or television work matter less. They trace a particular line through Sutherland’s career: a breakthrough supporting turn, sudden stardom, suspense and psychological unease, intimate drama, political authority and a late-career franchise role. The mix matters. His screen identity was never limited to one kind of character.

That range extended to television. The Television Academy identifies Citizen X as his Primetime Emmy-winning TV movie, and his official Golden Globes biography records wins for Citizen X and Path to War. The Golden Globes lists nine nominations and two wins (Television Academy; Golden Globes).

Sutherland once explained the appeal of character work in a 1970 interview with The Washington Post, quoted by the AP: “There is more challenge in character roles. There’s longevity. A good character actor can show a different face in every film and not bore the public.” These ten roles make that argument vividly.
