Hostage is a five-episode British political thriller on Netflix about a newly elected prime minister whose husband is kidnapped while a visiting French president is blackmailed. Created and written by Matt Charman, the TV-MA limited series stars Suranne Jones as Abigail Dalton and Julie Delpy as Vivienne Toussaint. It is a compact, fast-moving binge with an appealing central premise, strong lead performances, and a deliberately heightened approach to political conspiracy.
It is also worth setting expectations early: Hostage is a fictional drama, not a documentary or true-story adaptation. Viewers who value momentum, cliffhangers, and star power may find it effective; those looking for airtight procedural realism may be less convinced.

What is Hostage about?
Abigail Dalton has just become prime minister of the United Kingdom when her private life is turned into an international crisis. Her husband, Alex, a doctor working in French Guiana, is kidnapped. At almost the same time, French President Vivienne Toussaint arrives in Britain and becomes the target of threats and a blackmail campaign.
The two leaders begin as political rivals—or at least uneasy counterparts—but the escalating crisis forces them to cooperate. Dalton must protect her government and the country while trying to save her husband. Toussaint must decide how much political risk and personal compromise she is willing to accept as the situation threatens both her presidency and the British-French relationship.

The hostage situation is therefore only the thriller’s starting point. The series is principally interested in what happens when public responsibility collides with family loyalty, concealed government decisions, military influence, media pressure, and political ambition.

Episode structure and binge length
The series uses a short, escalating structure. Each episode advances both the immediate rescue problem and the wider political conspiracy.
- Episode 1 — 43 minutes: Dalton faces a national crisis after Alex is taken hostage and seeks help from the visiting French president.
- Episode 2 — 42 minutes: Dalton searches for a way to rescue Alex while attempting to keep the situation from the cabinet. Toussaint’s cooperation becomes increasingly important.
- Episode 3 — 44 minutes: The terror threat reaches a critical point, the kidnappers fall silent, and the two leaders discuss whether a deal is possible.
- Episode 4 — 38 minutes: Dalton faces grief and a cabinet mutiny, while Toussaint confronts her husband. The leaders reach an agreement under mounting pressure.
- Episode 5 — 46 minutes: A state of emergency is declared, military authority expands, and Dalton races to identify the architect of the conspiracy.
The brief episode count helps the show maintain forward motion. It also compresses a large number of political, military, family, and international subplots into roughly three and a half hours. That compression is one reason the show can feel propulsive in one moment and insufficiently developed in another.
The cast and central performances
Suranne Jones as Abigail Dalton
Jones plays Dalton as a leader forced to compartmentalize almost immediately. She must project certainty to the public while dealing privately with the kidnapping of her husband and the possibility that people within her own government are working against her.
The role was developed with Jones in mind, according to Netflix’s editorial coverage, and the series functions strongly as a star vehicle for her. Dalton is not presented as an untouchable political mastermind. Her authority is new, her family is exposed, and her decisions carry consequences that she cannot control. Jones’s performance supplies much of the emotional continuity as the plot moves between government rooms, security operations, family spaces, and crisis briefings.
Julie Delpy as Vivienne Toussaint
Delpy’s Toussaint is more than a visiting dignitary who happens to be caught in the British crisis. She is a second center of power, with her own political calculations, vulnerabilities, and obligations. Her uneasy partnership with Dalton gives the series its most distinctive relationship: two women at the top of their governments trying to determine whether cooperation is possible when neither can afford to appear weak.
The Jones-Delpy pairing is the clearest reason to watch. Their characters are not identical allies, and the tension between their public roles and private motives gives the otherwise familiar conspiracy framework a useful human dimension.

Supporting cast
The supporting cast includes Ashley Thomas as Alex Dalton, as well as Corey Mylchreest, Lucian Msamati, Martin McCann, James Cosmo, Jehnny Beth, Isobel Akuwudike, Hiftu Quasem, and Sophie Robertson. Alex’s work as a doctor in French Guiana is particularly important to the story because it connects the personal hostage plot to decisions made by governments and military institutions.
What themes does Hostage explore?
Public duty versus family protection
The show’s core question is simple but consequential: can a political leader make decisions for an entire country when her own family is being used to control her? Dalton’s dilemma is not limited to whether she can rescue Alex. Every concession may endanger the public, while every refusal may make her appear willing to sacrifice her family for office.
The title works literally through Alex’s captivity, but it also applies more broadly. The leaders are constrained by secrets, institutions, public expectations, past decisions, and the threat of political collapse.
The consequences of decisions made at a distance
The hostage plot eventually reaches back to an earlier military decision. The series asks whether leaders can separate themselves from the human consequences of policies made in offices far from the people affected by them. It treats this as a morally complicated issue rather than a simple justification for violence: a grievance may have a recognizable origin without excusing kidnapping, bombing, or coercion.
Elected authority versus institutional power
Matt Charman has described the series as being interested in the tension between elected politicians and institutional actors whose agendas may not match the government’s. The military-coup element consequently serves two purposes. It is a conventional thriller mechanism, but it is also a challenge to democratic accountability: who really controls a state when an elected leader is weakened?
Women as political protagonists
Hostage places two women at the center of a high-stakes political thriller without treating their gender as a novelty that needs constant explanation. Dalton and Toussaint are heads of government, rivals, negotiators, and vulnerable people. Their contrast allows the series to examine different styles of leadership, public performance, age, authority, and political symbolism.
Is Hostage worth watching?
The fairest assessment is that Hostage is a fast, compact, star-led political thriller with a strong premise and uneven plausibility.
Its strengths are easy to identify: the five-episode structure keeps the story moving, the Dalton-Toussaint relationship gives the crisis a compelling center, and Jones and Delpy bring weight to material that could otherwise become purely mechanical. The premise also creates immediate pressure without requiring a long setup.

The limitations are equally important. The show asks the audience to accept a complicated chain of threats, secrets, political maneuvers, and institutional betrayal in a short period. Some viewers and critics have praised its momentum and performances, while others have argued that the plotting and writing do not consistently support the scale of the premise. The critical response is mixed: Metacritic records a season score of 62 out of 100 based on 14 critics, with strong notices from outlets including Variety and The Guardian, while RogerEbert.com has been substantially more critical of its plausibility and plotting.
Watch it if: you enjoy political conspiracies, hostage negotiations, cliffhangers, morally compromised leaders, and limited series that can be completed quickly.
Approach cautiously if: you need detailed procedural realism, carefully paced subplots, or a conspiracy whose every step remains completely convincing.
Where can you watch Hostage?
Hostage premiered worldwide on Netflix on August 21, 2025. Netflix’s official title information lists it as a five-episode, TV-MA limited series and indicates that downloads are supported. Availability, audio, subtitle options, and download functionality can vary by region, account, and device, so viewers should check the Netflix listing available in their country.
This series should not be confused with several other productions sharing similar names. It is not the 2005 Bruce Willis film Hostage, the 2013 CBS series Hostages, or the Israeli and Indian series also titled Hostages. It is also separate from Netflix’s film iHostage, which was inspired by the 2022 Amsterdam Apple Store hostage incident.
What the title is—and is not
Although it appears on a site focused on documentaries, Hostage is a scripted fictional drama. It is not a documentary, a dramatized true-crime account, or a direct adaptation of a named real-world hostage crisis. Its political institutions and central conspiracy are fictional constructions designed to test the characters’ decisions.
Soundtrack by Jeff Russo
Jeff Russo composed the original score. Netflix Music released a digital soundtrack album on August 15, 2025. The album contains 15 tracks and runs for approximately 41 minutes. It is a digital release; the available research does not verify an official CD, vinyl, cassette, or other physical edition.
The score is therefore best treated as an accompanying digital release rather than evidence of a physical soundtrack product. Readers looking for it should verify the current availability through an authorized digital music service.

Spoilers: Hostage ending explained
Warning: the rest of this section reveals the major twists and ending.
Who is behind the kidnapping?
The finale identifies Shagan, played by Martin McCann, as the lead kidnapper. His motive is tied to the death of his pregnant wife after Dalton ordered the evacuation of British troops from Belize.
This backstory complicates the crisis without making Shagan’s actions morally acceptable. His grievance is connected to a decision made during Dalton’s political career, but the series presents his kidnapping and coercion as violent acts rather than as a legitimate form of redress. The revelation gives the hostage plot a personal link to Dalton’s past and reinforces the show’s interest in the afterlife of government decisions.
What is General Livingstone’s role?
The larger coup is connected to General Livingstone, who takes advantage of Dalton’s political vulnerability and her opposition to defense-budget cuts. The conspiracy is therefore larger than a single kidnapping. It is also an attempt to exploit a national emergency, weaken an elected prime minister, and expand military authority.
Dalton ultimately turns the situation against Livingstone by exposing his involvement in the kidnapping and bombing plot. The reveal reframes the crisis as an attack on democratic control as well as an effort to recover Alex.
What happens to Shagan?
At the safe house, Dalton’s family is placed in danger again. Sylvie, Dalton’s daughter, picks up a dropped gun and shoots Shagan. The immediate threat ends, but the scene is not presented as a clean victory. Sylvie’s action saves the family while exposing her to profound psychological damage.
That lasting damage is central to the ending. The series does not suggest that the family can simply return to normal once the gunman is gone. The “crack” left by the event remains part of the family’s future.
What does the final election decision mean?
The closing flash-forward shows Dalton back at the rebuilt 10 Downing Street with Alex and Sylvie present. She prepares to call a new general election.

The decision suggests that Dalton intends to lead more openly and authentically. Her experience—and, in part, Toussaint’s example—has changed how she understands political leadership. However, the series does not reveal whether Dalton will win the election. The conclusion offers a possible new beginning rather than a guaranteed political triumph.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Hostage is best approached as a short, high-pressure political thriller rather than a rigorously realistic account of government crisis management. Suranne Jones and Julie Delpy give the series a persuasive center, and the five-episode format makes it easy to binge. Its conspiracy and plausibility will divide viewers, but the conflict between family loyalty, public duty, and institutional power gives the show more to discuss than its cliffhangers alone.
