Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Netfilm.app was reported permanently shut down on May 24, 2024, after its operators received a DMCA notice. The report came from a third party that attributed the announcement to Netfilm’s Discord channel, so it is not the same as a statement from a rights holder or government agency. There is also no verified evidence that the current Netfilm-branded domains, mirrors, or APKs are official continuations.
If you want a safer replacement for watching films and documentaries, the three most practical options are Netflix, Prime Video, and Tubi. Netflix and Prime Video offer large subscription libraries and offline viewing on supported devices. Tubi is free and ad-supported, although its catalog and availability vary by country.
What happened to Netfilm?
Netfilm.app was reported to have closed permanently on May 24, 2024, following a DMCA notice. The available report describes Netfilm as an unauthorized streaming site and says the shutdown announcement was made through its Discord channel. Read the account in TechWorm’s report on the Netfilm shutdown, keeping in mind that this is third-party reporting rather than a direct statement from a rights holder or public authority.
Search results now show several unrelated Netfilm-branded websites and pages, including netfilm.cam, netfilm.digital, and an S3-hosted Netfilm page. None of the available evidence verifies that these domains are operated by the former Netfilm team. Claims that Netfilm simply moved to a new “official” domain should therefore be treated as unverified.

That matters in practical terms. A mirror or APK claiming to be the replacement may be unrelated to the former service, may disappear without warning, or may expose users to unwanted software and account or payment risks. The alternatives below are established services with identifiable help pages and supported apps. They are not identical replacements for Netfilm, and documentary availability still depends on your country and the current catalog.
The three best Netfilm alternatives at a glance
| Service | Best for | Cost model | Offline viewing | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Netflix | Polished subscription streaming and documentaries available in your region | Paid plans; prices and features vary by country | Yes, on supported mobile and computer devices | Titles and plans differ by country; downloads expire |
| Prime Video | Mixing included titles with rentals, purchases, channels, and live programming | Subscription, rentals, purchases, and add-on subscriptions | Yes, in supported apps | A title displayed on Prime Video is not necessarily included with Prime |
| Tubi | Watching free movies, television, and some documentary programming | Free, ad-supported streaming | Do not assume offline downloads are available | Availability is regional and the catalog changes |
1. Netflix: the strongest all-around subscription alternative
Netflix is the best fit if you want a familiar, reliable streaming experience and are willing to pay for a subscription. Its documentary selection changes by territory, so it is more accurate to say that Netflix is a strong place to search for documentaries than to promise that a particular film is available everywhere.
Netflix does not use one worldwide price list. Its official plan information requires users to select a country, because plan names, prices, features, and extra-member eligibility vary by location and package. The displayed regional help page lists Basic, Standard, and Premium; it describes Basic as ad-free in that version. Do not assume that another country’s plan table, advertising policy, or download limits applies to your account.
How to sign up
The current signup flow displays “Step 1 of 3,” “Choose your plan,” and a “Next” button. Start at the Netflix plan-selection page, select your country or follow the account flow presented for your location, and review the plan’s current terms before paying.
How to download documentaries for offline viewing
Netflix supports downloads on devices with the latest Netflix app, including Android phones and tablets, iPhone and iPad, Amazon Fire tablets, and Google Chromebooks with the Google Play Store. Some older operating-system versions do not support downloads.

- Open the Netflix app.
- Select Downloads.
- Select See What You Can Download.
- Open a movie and select Download. For a series, select the download icon beside an episode or choose Download Season.
To watch later, open the app, select Downloads, choose the downloaded title, and select Play. You must remain signed in to access downloaded content offline. Netflix downloads are temporary app content, not permanent video files: they can expire, some titles have annual download limits, and canceling your account deletes the downloads from the device. If you restart the membership, you must download the titles again. Netflix’s help page currently says ad-free plans can have up to 100 active downloads per device, while ad-supported plans are limited to 15 total downloads per device per calendar month; check the plan applicable to your country before relying on those figures.
Choose Netflix if…
- You want one simple subscription rather than a mixture of rentals and add-on channels.
- You frequently watch on a phone, tablet, or supported Chromebook while traveling.
- You are prepared to check whether a documentary is available in your specific country.
2. Prime Video: the most flexible but least uniform catalog
Prime Video is useful when you want more than a single subscription library. Its interface includes Home, Free to me, Movies, TV shows, Sports, News, Live TV, Store, Categories, Subscriptions, and a search function. That range reflects an important difference from Netflix: Prime Video combines included subscription titles with rentals, purchases, live content, and add-on subscriptions.
Before pressing play, check how the title is labeled. A documentary appearing in Prime Video’s search results is not automatically included with a basic Prime membership. Look for whether it is included, marked as free, available to rent or buy, or part of a separate subscription. The Prime Video home page and its help center show the current access categories and navigation.
Advertising is no longer simply “ad-free”
The claim that Prime Video is ad-free by default is outdated. Amazon now offers a separate Prime Video Ad Free subscription. Amazon says that it removes advertising interruptions from most Prime Video movies and television shows, but free ad-supported programming, live television, and sports events may still contain ads. Some titles are labeled “watch with ads” or “with ads” on their detail pages. Review the label and the applicable terms in your market rather than assuming every title follows the same rule.
How to download Prime Video content
Offline downloads require a Fire tablet or the Prime Video app for iOS, Android, macOS, or Windows 10 and 11.

- Open the Prime Video app.
- Find the documentary or other title.
- Open the title’s detail page.
- Select the download option. For a series, download the entire season or use the download icon beside individual episodes.
On Android and Windows, the app can allow you to choose where downloads are stored. Amazon specifically advises against saving them to USB-connected drives. Downloaded content also cannot be played over Chromecast or AirPlay. Watching offline on a television requires a supported device and, where applicable, a compatible adapter.
Common Prime Video playback problems
Prime Video’s documented troubleshooting guidance covers buffering, freezing, title playback errors, authentication failures caused by an incorrect device date or time, VPN or proxy interference, outdated apps and browsers, simultaneous-streaming limits, HDCP incompatibility, unsupported Dolby Vision equipment chains, and network congestion.

- Check that the device date and time are correct.
- Turn off a VPN or proxy temporarily.
- Update the Prime Video app or browser.
- Check whether another device is already streaming the same title or account.
- Inspect HDMI and HDCP compatibility if the problem occurs on a television or external display.
- Test the connection without other heavy downloads or streams.
Under the cited Prime Video guidance, the same title can be streamed on two devices at a time. If the browser itself is outdated, Amazon documents these update paths: enter chrome://settings/help in Chrome, or open Firefox’s menu and select Help → About Firefox.
Choose Prime Video if…
- You want to compare included, rental, purchase, and add-on options in one service.
- You already use supported Prime Video apps on a phone, tablet, Mac, or Windows PC.
- You are comfortable checking the exact access label and advertising status for each documentary.
3. Tubi: the best free alternative
Tubi is the clearest choice if your priority is avoiding a subscription. Tubi describes itself as a free streaming service offering movies, TV shows, creator-led stories, and Tubi Originals. The service is ad-supported, so free access comes with advertising rather than a promise of uninterrupted playback.
Tubi’s official coverage statement lists the United States, Canada, Mexico, Latin America, the United Kingdom, and Australia, with access on more than 30 devices. It is not universally available internationally: Tubi’s regional information says the service is currently unavailable in Europe because of changes in EU laws.

The public Tubi site exposes Sign In and Register while also presenting playable titles. Account requirements can depend on the device and region, so do not assume that registration is always necessary for basic browsing or playback. Tubi’s Help Center includes sections for getting started, account setup, captions, parental controls, casting, advertising, troubleshooting, and accessibility. Its official site currently links apps for iOS, Android, Roku, and Amazon Fire.
What to expect from Tubi’s catalog
Tubi’s catalog is dynamic. It includes titles from different years, live programming, and current-year listings, and availability can change. Search for the specific documentary before planning a viewing session, particularly if you are outside the United States.
The current official Tubi pages reviewed do not establish a general offline-download workflow comparable to Netflix or Prime Video. Do not assume that a Tubi title can be downloaded for a flight or an area without internet access. Treat Tubi primarily as an online, ad-supported service unless the specific device and regional app documentation confirms otherwise.
Choose Tubi if…
- You want a legitimate free streaming option and can accept advertising.
- You live in one of Tubi’s listed supported territories.
- You are watching on a supported smart-TV, streaming device, phone, tablet, or web browser.
Which alternative is best for you?
- Choose Netflix for the simplest paid experience and dependable offline downloads on supported devices. Confirm your country’s plans and search the local catalog first.
- Choose Prime Video if you want the broadest mix of included streaming, rentals, purchases, live programming, and add-on subscriptions. Check the title’s access label before assuming it is included.
- Choose Tubi if free access matters most and you are in a supported territory. Expect advertising, changing availability, and no verified general offline-download feature.
How to find a particular documentary after Netfilm
- Search the title on Netflix. If it is missing, check the local Netflix catalog rather than changing region through an unofficial method.
- Search Prime Video and inspect the access label. Confirm whether the documentary is included, free with ads, a rental, a purchase, or part of an add-on subscription.
- Search Tubi if you are in a supported territory. Remember that the catalog can change and that playback is ad-supported.
- Check the documentary’s official distributor or broadcaster. A film may be available through a museum, public broadcaster, library service, festival platform, or the filmmaker’s own authorized release.
- Use only official apps and domains. A page calling itself a “new Netfilm official site” is not verified merely because it uses the Netfilm name.
Bottom line
Netfilm.app should be treated as shut down, not as a service with a confirmed new official mirror. Netflix is the best general paid alternative, Prime Video is the most flexible if you understand its different access models, and Tubi is the best free option in the territories where it operates. None guarantees a particular documentary worldwide, so search the exact title, check the current regional catalog, and use the service’s official app or website.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Netfilm still working?
Netfilm.app was reported permanently shut down on May 24, 2024 after a DMCA notice. Current Netfilm-branded domains and APK claims have not been independently verified as continuations of the former service.

Which Netfilm alternative is free?

Both support downloads in specified apps and on supported devices. Netflix downloads are temporary and can expire. Prime Video downloads cannot be played through Chromecast or AirPlay, and Amazon advises against storing them on USB-connected drives.
Does Tubi support offline downloads?
The current official Tubi pages reviewed do not verify a general offline-download workflow. Do not assume that Tubi works like Netflix or Prime Video for offline viewing.

Use Netflix for the simplest paid experience, Prime Video for flexible included and paid access, or Tubi for free ad-supported streaming where available.
